First Book of the Year 2021!


The lovely Sheila at Book Journey is once again hosting First Book of the Year and this is the 7th year I participate. It's a meme where we share the first book we will be reading in 2021. And it gets me all excited for another year of great reading.

So what is the First Book of the Year? It should be:

A. A coveted book that you have wanted to read but have just not found the time.

B. A delicious favorite… one you have read before, but crave to read again.

C. Really whatever you want it to – it is after all YOUR First Book of the year.

I've decided my first book of the year would be a nonfiction book that I've been wanting to read ever since it was first sent to me: Blue Sky Kingdom by Bruce Kirby, a book that explores the themes of modern distraction and the loss of ancient wisdom. This book fits in with my goals this year of staying focused on my priorities.


A warm and unforgettable portrait of a family letting go of the known world to encounter an unfamiliar one filled with rich possibilities and new understandings. 

Bruce Kirkby had fallen into a pattern of looking mindlessly at his phone for hours, flipping between emails and social media, ignoring his children and wife and everything alive in his world, when a thought struck him. This wasn't living; this wasn't him. This moment of clarity started a chain reaction which ended with a grand plan: he was going to take his wife and two young sons, jump on a freighter and head for the Himalaya. 

In Blue Sky Kingdom, we follow Bruce and his family's remarkable three months journey, where they would end up living amongst the Lamas of Zanskar Valley, a forgotten appendage of the ancient Tibetan empire, and one of the last places on earth where Himalayan Buddhism is still practiced freely in its original setting.

Richly evocative, Blue Sky Kingdom explores the themes of modern distraction and the loss of ancient wisdom coupled with Bruce coming to terms with his elder son's diagnosis on the Autism Spectrum. Despite the natural wonders all around them at times, Bruce's experience will strike a chord with any parent—from rushing to catch a train with the whole family to the wonderment and beauty that comes with experience the world anew with your children.

First Book Of The Year 2019!

This year I've decided to read Cinder by Marissa Meyer. I've been wanting to read this book for such a long time. Ever since my daughter (and hundreds of other bloggers) have said how much they loved it.

First Book of the Year 2018

This year I've decided to read Degrees of Love by Lisa Slabach. It's women's fiction that is getting rave reviews. Here is the book description:
At thirty-six, Susan Sinclair has it all. First Book of the Year 2017

This year I decided to start my year with The Fire by Night by Teresa Messineo. It's historical fiction, a genre I love. The author spent seven years researching the history behind her first novel. I'm intrigued. It's about two American military nurses during World War II. I have begun my research for my second novel, which hopefully won't take that long! It will be based on my parent's family history and love story.

My review for The Fire by Night will be up later this month on January 25.

First Book of the Year 2016

I've heard so many good things about All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. The copy I am holding is the copy I bought for a friend of mine when the book was just published. I picked it up at Costco, read the back cover and thought, "This sounds amazing." I was right because it then went on to win the Pulitzer Prize and the Goodreads Choice Award for 2014.

So I have been wanting to read this one for a long time. It's a perfect way to treat myself on this first day of 2016. I know this is going to be a great reading year. I hope you all have a great book to start your year with!

First Book of the Year 2015



Once again I'm joining Sheila at Book Journey to highlight the first book we want to read in 2015. In 2014 I did not read half the books I wanted to because I did a lot of screening for my new work as virtual book tour coordinator at iRead Book Tours. It was an exciting year for me, and I finally realized what I've been wanting to do for a long time. I know 2015 will be filled with more adventures in the book world!

So what did I choose for my first book of the year? A YA book that is pure escapism for me. Why? To make up for all the books I missed last year: Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac by Gabrielle Zevin. I really enjoyed her Birthright series and I know I'm in for a treat with this one!


Here I am reading it!


I'm in my office in the evening when I do most of my reading. Sometimes during the day, I take a small break with tea and chocolate and enjoy a chapter or two.

First Book of the Year 2014


This year I've joined Sheila at Book Journey in posting about the first book I'm reading in 2014. There are, of course, many books I'd like to read. I have lists and more lists; groaning bookshelves, friend recommendations and review obligations. But I have decided to start the new year with a book that is inspirational. I want and plan to have a great year starting new ventures and learning many new things. Therefore, the first book of the year I am reading is I am Malala by Malala Yousafzai with Christina Lamb. It's also my book club's selection for this month.

I love the title and the bright cover of this book! Look for my review at the end of January.


Sheila thought it would be fun to have a photo of us reading the first book of the year, so here I am in my living room in the evening. It's my favorite place and time of day to read.
