Yesterday we kicked off the tour for DISRUPTION and I had the pleasure of having Chuck Barrett write me a guest post on how he came about choosing the different settings in Italy for this newest release. It's posted on Essentially Italian. If you like action-packed cyber thrillers this one delivers. And we also have a giveaway. Enter today to win a copy!

Book Details:

Book Title: Disruption by Chuck Barrett
Category: Adult Fiction, 404 pages
Genre: Thriller
Publisher: Switchback Press
Release date: October 25, 2016
Tour dates: Dec 12 to 30, 2016
Content Rating: PG-13: One use of f-word, two sex scenes, violence typically associated with thrillers such as gunshot wounds and fight scenes. There are, however, torture scenes and some gruesome deaths.

Book Description:

There are two types of people: those who have been hacked and know it, and those who have been hacked and don’t know it.

Former Naval Intelligence Officer turned secret operative Jake Pendleton finds himself in a pulse-pounding race to stop a cyber-terrorist from releasing a string of the most heinous cyber-crimes the world has ever seen. Crimes that could render the world’s advanced technology useless.

Jake teams with his partner, Francesca Catanzaro, to track down their only lead, a white-hat hacker in Italy known only as The Jew. A man who might hold the key to stop a group of black-hat hackers from causing worldwide chaos—tag named Disruption.

After a search of the hacker’s flat in Rome turns up empty, Jake and Francesca follow the clues—a trail of dead bodies that leads them across Europe. Along the way, Jake discovers a possible link between recent hacks and a Malaysian airliner that mysteriously disappeared.

In the final adrenaline-charged moments before Disruption, Jake and Francesca find themselves in a high-voltage race to stop these cyber terrorists from unleashing destruction against their sworn mortal enemy.

My Review:
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani

I'm attracted to cyber thrillers. Probably because a lot of my life is centred around my computer, from my business to my blogging and my banking. My kids even check their school assignments and tests online. What would happen if the world’s advanced technology suddenly becomes useless? DISRUPTION is the third book in the Jake Pendleton series and it explores the theme of cyber-terrorists. The kind that could cripple the world and cause major wars.

Although I haven't read the first books in this series, this book pretty much stands alone. Jake, a secret operative, and his Italian partner Francesca work great together. Their camaraderie and familiarity with one another because of previous missions (from other books) truly stands out. The pages are action-packed with scenes taking place in Italy, such as Rome, Venice and Florence, but also Austria and Germany. I could so easily picture this as a movie. I loved the European setting and Jake's American view of its bureaucracy. Made me smile. I liked learning about white-hat hackers versus black-hat hackers.

The plot is well executed and the story flows well. Jake and Francesca must track down and stop cyber-thrillers from shutting down their military and safety systems. There are two storylines and as the reader is trying to connect the two, the suspense builds up nicely and Barrett brings everything to a heart-pounding conclusion. I loved the scene with the eagle; it was original and intense! There are torture scenes in this book, though, and gruesome deaths which made me shudder. I would have preferred less of these.

Jake has a love interest (ah...something to spice Jake's life, I thought) but not much of it is explored in this novel. It's clear the romance began in a previous book in the series and although Jake struggles with some decisions about this woman, for readers like me coming in at this point in the series, I couldn't really relate to this relationship or his struggles. There wasn't much for me to go on. But this is a minor issue.

For fans of Chuck Barrett's novels, this will be a great addition to the series. And for new readers, DISRUPTION will make you want to read the other books too. This is one action-packed novel with high stakes, evil villains and a kick-ass duo out to save the world.

  2. Thanks Laura for the great review. Yes, the relationship with Kyli does begin in an earlier book (The Toymaker) and continued through Breach of Power and DISRUPTION. (4th Jake Pendleton series book). Kyli's character is based on the REAL Kyli Wullenweber who won a character contest after the first Jake Pendleton book, The Savannah Project. Always been fun writing about real life characters!
