Who Wants Pizza? The Kids' Guide to the History, Science & Culture of Food by Jan Thornhill (Rated: C)
Maple Tree Press
ISBN: 978-1897349977
Published Sept 15, 2010
Paperback, 64 pages, Ages 9-13

This book is one of those fun educational books filled with amazing and freaky facts about one of our favourite topics—food! It's a book that covers the history of food (how we came to have the food we eat today), the culture of food (food rules, traditions and recipes) and the science of food (how food has changed over the years).

This book is a real eye-opener. I particularly liked the Food for Thought section that helped us as consumers to reflect on what we are eating exactly, where our food comes from, the way farm animals are raised, the way we grow food that is having a negative effect on us and our planet, world hunger, and finally, sustainable agriculture and making wise food choices. I think it is important that today's generation of young ones learn about making good food choices that benefit not only themselves but also the world.

The book is filled with eye-catching pictures that are colourful, thought-provoking and sometimes ...gross. My daughter and I scrunched our faces in disgust at the pics of some of the foods eaten in some cultures—monkey toes, pig snout, bird saliva, insects...shall I go on? It describes humans as the omnivores that eat almost anything. It also calls humans animals. Like almost any science book, it supports evolution, but Christians can easily disregard statements such as, “Human beings are still the only animals that have learned to control fire.” I had to laugh at this. I'm certain that if I called a person an animal he would be insulted but somehow, when stated in a scientific context, it is deemed acceptable.

Apart from this, this book would enhance any school and home library. It is packed with a lot of information distributed in coloured text boxes that makes it a quick and fun book to read. It will especially delight the inquisitive reader who likes cool facts that are quirky and different from the everyday normal.

This book is also available in French at Bayard Canada Books.
This book is printed on Ancient Forest Friendly Paper.
I will count this book toward the following challenges: Dewey Decimal Challenge, Middle Grade Book Challenge, TwentyEleven Challenge
