Kid Konnection: The 39 Clues Cahills vs. Vespers Book 2: A King's Ransom by Jude Watson

The 39 Clues Cahills vs. Vespers Book 2: A King's Ransom by Jude Watson
Scholastic Inc.
ISBN: 978-0545298407
Published Dec 6, 2011
Hardcover, 192 pages

Just when you think it can't get any better, it does. With all that I've come to expect from this series—plot twists and turns, captivating historical facts and excellent suspense building, Book 2 of the second series of The 39 Clues delivers more action-packed adventure with a whopping cliff-hanger ending.

The story picks up from where it left off in Book 1: The Medusa Plot, where fifteen-year-old Amy and her thirteen-year-old brother Dan have just delivered the ransom to get the seven kidnapped members of their family released from the Vespers, their enemy organization. But Vesper One, the leader, now asks them to track a long-lost item, an ancient map, and to steal it. Another mission impossible for the duo-team who use state of the art technology and their wits.

This time their adventure takes them to Switzerland and the Czech Republic as they race against time to deliver a map whose location they must once again figure out through clues. These clues lead us to the past activities of the Nazis, WWII spies, the mad king Ludwig the Second, and the All Saints Church, also known as Church of Bones. It's actually a church decorated with the skulls and bones of 40 000 people. I HAD to look this one up. And although, creepy and bizarre, the carpenter, who used his imagination to solve the problem of the overcrowded cemeteries during the Plague, created works of stunning art with these bones. I always learn fascinating history reading these books!

All along, the questions as to what Vesper One is after with his strange requests, who he is, and what will become of the secret of the 39 clues kept my curiosity strong. There is much foreshadowing in this book of bigger things to come. Amy and Dan have lost much of their innocence, and Dan is struggling with his anger.

If you haven't read any of the The 39 Clues, this second series won't make much sense. These are not stand alone books. The characters go back from the very beginning, and McIntyre, the lawyer who was present from the first pages of the very first book, is back in this one and leaves clues that will play a part in the next book. If you want to experience the fun of The 39 Clues, I strongly suggest you start from the beginning because getting the whole picture of the rivalry in important to understanding what makes up The 39 Clues. Needless to say, I can't wait to read the next book that has just been released!

Note: This book is rated C = clean read.

The 39 Clues Cahill vs Vespers Book 1: The Medusa Plot by Gordon Korman

The 39 Clues Cahill vs Vespers Book 1: The Medusa Plot by Gordon Korman
(Rated: C)
Scholastic Inc.
ISBN: 978-0545298391
Published Aug 30, 2011
Hardcover, 224 pages

The first series of The 39 Clues (a groundbreaking program of books, game cards and interactive website) was so good that I had to wonder if a second series could live up to it. Well, I'm happy to say, yes! This new series (6 books total with more cards that unlock online missions) is typical of the 39 Clues trademark—the same brother and sister team, non-stop action-adventure, brilliant and exciting missions, and high stakes.

It's been now two years since Dan and Amy finished the race for the 39 clues that led them to the source of incredible power. But a new organization has sprung up, one Amy and Dan knew would eventually hunt them down: the Vespers. Not family-related like the Cahills but a ruthless group that would stop at nothing to get what they want.

Fifteen-year old Amy and thirteen-year old Dan don't exactly know what they are after. All they know is that members of the Cahill family were kidnapped and they have to fulfill a difficult ransom request or their captured friends will start dying. This mission takes them to Florence and then Rome as they try to figure out how to complete it and bring the hostages home. Filled with adventure and puzzling situations, I was glad to hop on the journey with them, especially as I learned more about Roman history and Italian renaissance art. Oh, I was so in my element with this setting!

Needless to say, it was suspenseful and thrilling. Korman's writing is excellent, the pace, plot and character development even better. A few new characters were introduced (I liked them!) and some events from past books mentioned. I still marvel how a handful of writers could keep the story flowing smoothly from book to book. Book Two will be released in December with Jude Watson as the author and the last book will be written by David Baldacci, scheduled for release on March 26, 2013. So from this first book and the cast of writers, I think it safe to say this second series will definitely rock!

I will count this book toward the following challenges: Middle-grade Book Challenge, Italy in Books Challenge

Kid Konnection: The 39 Clues Book 11: Vespers Rising

The 39 Clues Book 11: Vespers Rising by Rick Riordan, Peter Lerangis, Gordon Korman, and Jude Watson
(Rated: C)
Scholastic Inc
ISBN: 978-0545290593
Published April 5, 2011
Hardcover, 240 pages

I have read all 10 books in this series only to realize that this one--and not Book 10—is actually the last one. But wait, it gets better. Book 1 of a second series in The 39 Clues is being published on August 30, 2011. And it promises to be good! I will be posting a review of it on August 27.

So what is Book 11 about? It's an introduction to the Vespers, the organization that will stop at nothing to grab the 39 clues that led Amy and her brother Dan to the secret of great power. A secret started 500 years ago by their ancestor Gideon Cahill and coveted by the cruel and evil Damien Vesper.

The book is divided into 4 parts, each written by a different author. The first part is about Gideon Cahill (1507), the second about Madeline Cahill (1527), the third about Grace Cahill (1942) and finally the 4th part is about Amy and Dan Cahill in the present day. I enjoyed reading all four parts immensely because it gave the history of how the 39 clues started, how the Madrigal was formed and how Grace Cahill came to have something in her possession that was to be guarded.

Filled with action and suspense, as one would expect from the 39 Clues series, the adventure and danger continues. We were given a taste of what's to come. Amy and Dan are no longer innocent teens trying to figure things out. They are now on a mission. I am really looking forward to what the second series will bring out. And I don't think I will be disappointed.

I will count this book toward the following challenges: Middle Grade Book Challenge, TwentyEleven Challenge

The 39 Clues Book Ten: Into the Gauntlet - Review and MEGA 10-Book Giveaway!

The 39 Clues Book Ten: Into the Gauntlet by Margaret Peterson Haddix (Rated: C)
Scholastic Canada
ISBN: 978-0545060509
Published Aug 31, 2010
Hardcover,  330 pages

Finally, after reading all nine books, I get to the last one in this exciting series… but, wait a minute, I’m not so sure it IS the last one! Apart from the bonus book, The Black Book of Buried Secrets, that is being released on October 26, 2010 (in which the hidden secrets and mysteries surrounding history’s most notorious family are uncovered) the ending of The 39 Clues left some unanswered questions. “Our adventures aren’t over, Dan thought. But they are for now.” So, entretemps, this series has ended but it will definitely continue sometime in the near future.

Without giving too much away, here’s what Book 10 reveals: 14-year-old Amy Cahill and her 10-year-old brother Dan are now expected not only to find the 39 clues first, but they are also commissioned to reunite their traitorous family—the same people responsible for their parents’ death. After a month of dodging bullets, running from evil cousins and getting out of impossible situations, they aren’t at all keen on forgiving and forgetting what’s been done to them. But there’s more to the 39 clues hunt than they’ve been led to believe. Even once the reader discovers what the prize at the end of the line is and what it means—power to rule the world—what’s going to happen once it’s discovered and taken possession of?

About halfway through the book, the suspense really begins and continues full speed ahead. Haddix makes use of short chapters and cliffhanger endings to keep the reader turning the pages. This was the longest of the books at over 327 pages.

The ending is satisfying but not complete, hence it may leave some readers feeling like they’re hanging suspended. I look forward to the continuation. I’ve invested time to read this series, enjoyed it tremendously, and now I understand some things better having reached this last book.

If you haven’t started reading this series yet, it’s worth it especially since Steven Spielberg is to direct the film production based on The 39 Clues. In addition, this book offers an interactive experience for kids. They can collect the cards that come with each books, play the games online and win prizes. There are over $100 000 in prizes for clue hunters. Well, The 39 Clues isn’t over and in a way I’m glad about it. What will Amy and Dan have to face now that they’ve discovered a powerful secret? We’ll soon find out!

And now as promised here's the final mega-giveaway courtesy of Nikole from Scholastic Canada! This time enter the chance to win all ten books from The 39 Clues Series. One winner will receive:

The 39 Clues Book Nine: Storm Warning by Linda Sue Park - Review and MEGA 9-Book Giveaway

The 39 Clues Book Nine: Storm Warning by Linda Sue Park (Rated: C)
Scholastic Inc.
ISBN: 978-0545060493
Published May 25, 2010
Hardcover, 190 pages

Having read all the books in this series so far, I am now most anxious to read the final book that is due to come out in August. Every book has captured my attention and Book 9: Storm Warning is no exception. It is aptly titled and if you are an astute observer some things are revealed even before you read the book. That’s one of the things I love about The 39 Clues.

This time 14 year-old Amy Cahill and her 11-year-old brother Dan are in Jamaica, following the lead of Anne Bonny, a pirate of the 1700s. They meet Lester and his grandmother Alice who play a vital role in helping them find their next clue. Things heat up when, once again, they confront their au pair, Nellie Gomez who reveals that she wasn’t a random college student hired by Aunt Beatrice to be their au pair. She continues to explain in part what her role is vis-à-vis them, her charges. This leaves Dan and especially Amy hurt, angry and very distrustful of her.

Suspense builds as the man in black who has followed them closely throughout the hunt, and whom they fear since he tried to kill them in the past, is now very close on their heels. When a tragedy occurs, devastating Dan and Amy, I was initially surprised this would be included in the story. But as the story races to its finish, I understood this plot element perfectly. The Cahill duo are challenged in a test that determines their fate and semi-prepares them for the final confrontation with the man in black and their superior role in the clue for the 39 clues. Another satisfying and cliffhanger ending. Can’t wait to read the next and final book!

The 39 Clues Book Eight: The Emperor's Code by Gordon Korman - Review and MEGA 8-Book Giveaway

The 39 Clues Book Eight: The Emperor's Code by Gordon Korman
(Rated: C)
Scholastic Inc.
ISBN: 978-0-545060486
Published April 6, 2010
Hardcover, 190 pages

And so the hunt for the 39 clues continues, culminating in another revelation at the end of this book with enough unanswered questions to leave the reader anxious to read the next book. For the first time, 11 year-old Dan Cahill gets separated from his 14 year-old sister Amy Cahill and their au pair Nellie Gomez in China, a country with a population of over one billion people. Dan inadvertently joins Jonah Wizard and we learn more about this character, the Janus branch, and his role in the search for the 39 clues.

I love the relationship between Dan and his sister. We get to see how it is tested once again at this point in the story and how much they care for one another. Two scenes in this book reveal their characters when faced with choices to beat their opponents.

The historical figures that lead us to the next clue are Puyi, China’s last emperor, and George Mallory. I really enjoyed the setting of this book, and although the last nail-biting scene was a little far-fetched, it’s what marks The 39 Clues as an adventurous roller-coaster ride filled with interesting historical and scientific tidbits. Unlike the other books, this one also contains a message within the book that is conveyed by putting together the 17 words circled throughout the book. They form three sentences.

Two more books left in this series and I am eager to find out how it will all come to a finish. For fans of The 39 Clues this book will not disappoint. It builds up expectation for what will come next … and for the climactic ending, no doubt.

And now as promised here's another mega-giveaway courtesy of Nikole from Scholastic Canada! This time enter the chance to win eight books from The 39 Clues Series. One winner will receive:

The 39 Clues Book Seven: The Viper's Nest by Peter Lerangis

The 39 Clues Book Seven: The Viper's Nest by Peter Lerangis (Rated: C)
Scholastic Inc.
ISBN: 978-0-545-06047-9
Published Feb 2, 2010
Hardcover, 190 pages

Out of all the seven books I’ve read so far in the series, this one is the most suspenseful. The latest lead takes 14 year-old Amy Cahill and her 11 year-old brother Dan Cahill to South Africa in search of the next clue in the hunt for the 39 clues that unlock the secret to a great power.

Although South Africa does not come alive to me as some of the other destinations did, the author focuses on its history of fighting apartheid and gaining civil rights. We meet some of the late Grace’s good friends and learn more about her through them. Shaka Zulu and Sir Winston Churchill are the historical figures that play a role in the discovery of the latest clue.

Some of the characters that appear in this book are Isabel Kabra and her kids, still vicious enemies who pursue Amy and Dan. The Holts make a brief appearance and Hamilton helps them out again in secret. Makes me wonder what will become of this relationship between Hamilton and the Cahill kids. Alistair Oh makes his usual “help the kids, then disappear” act. And Nellie Gomez, their au pair is with them throughout their mission to find the next clue. Amy and Dan finally confront Nellie about their suspicions of her and she reassures them with explanations that re-establish the trust they had from the beginning of their journey. It seems clear to me that she cares about them, but I am still trying to figure out who she really is!

Toward the end of the book, an incident occurs and Dan is fighting for his life. And… Amy and Dan finally learn the truth about their family branch. In retrospect, I should have known all along. This book makes me very eager to begin Book 8. We are getting closer to the end and we feel it.

If you haven't read any of The 39 Clues books, you may get a chance to do so by entering the next mega-giveaway of Books 1-7. The giveaway will be posted here on Thursday, May 27. Entering is easy, so come back for a chance to win this exciting series!

The 39 Clues Book Six: In Too Deep by Jude Watson

The 39 Clues Book Six: In Too Deep by Jude Watson (Rated:C)
Scholastic Inc
ISBN: 978-0-545-06046-2
Published Nov 3, 2009
Hardcover, 207 pages

Unlike the first five books in which the hunt felt like a fast-paced game to beat the competition in finding the 39 clues, Book 6 focuses on family and ends in a more serious tone. Things turn deadly, and fourteen year-old Amy begins to have flashbacks of the night her parents were killed in a house fire. Just like its title, this one pulls you in deep as we get closer to the finish line.

Amy and her eleven year-old brother Dan Cahill are in Australia this time, following their parents’ footsteps. They search and find their father’s cousin, Uncle Shep, who Dan and Amy knew as children. He’s a very likeable “surfing bum” whose aid becomes indispensable. Nellie Gomez, their au pair, is with them, of course, but more questions pop up as to who she really is, as once again she displays professional skills she must have been trained for. Not much fazes her. She can handle anything.

The sights and sounds of Australia colour this book with descriptions of shimmering blue oceans, open skies, red earth, and the quirky Australian speech. As with all The 39 Clues books, a historical figure is responsible in some way to lead them to a clue and in this case it’s Amelia Earhart.

As usual, the relationship between Amy and Dan is typical of a brother and sister, but it is tested anew when Amy keeps information about their parents’ demise from her brother. The only part that made me uncomfortable was when contemplating what happened the night Amy and Dan’s parents died. It brought up the heavy question of how far someone would go to gain power. What could possibly be so important about the 39 clues that people would kill or sacrifice everything, including their lives? I’m thinking that Book 10 will have to come up with an amazing revelation or it will definitely be anti-climactic.
