Upper West Side Story by Susan Pashman (Review and Giveaway!)

Upper West Side Story by Susan Pashman
ISBN:9781941861035
Published: May 27, 2015
Published by: Harvard Square Editions
Trade paperback, 280 pages

 My Review:
 Reviewed by Sandra Olshaski

This is an excellent book, a very emotional one. The title is perfect as it refers to a classic story that was made into a Broadway success, but with a different twist. The book cover is brilliant!

The story is told through the eyes of Bettina, a professor of Women's History in New York's ultra-liberal Upper West Side, and that of her 13-year-old son, Max. When Max becomes embroiled in controversy following an accident involving his best friend, Cyrus, who also happens to be black, racial hostility erupts engulfing their families and the community. Political tensions arising from the accident threaten to destroy people and friendships especially that of white Bettina and black Viola, Cyrus' mother.

I was itching to read a good YA novel that was different and entertaining. Drawn by Chris Ledbetter was just that and more! Ledbetter was able to write a contemporary fiction novel with fantasy elements taken from and mixed with the art world. Picture A-ha's 1985's innovative music video of Take On Me, with its mix of real-life and pencil-sketch animated characters. That was so cool! And in turn I found Drawn to be just as unique and different from any YA book I've read. In many ways, this novel took me back to my high school years, when I first fell in love and drawing was one of my hobbies.

Kika the Upside-Down Girl is a fun, and really cool book that highlights the joy that children feel with the freedom that comes with propelling one's body upside down with flips, handstands and just plain tumbling. My son who loves to do just that--using my mattress as a trampoline--loved this book. He says kids who like to flip will be able to relate to Kika, as did he.

This novel is about Egisto Bertozzi and his wife Armida (I couldn't figure her out at the beginning but was able to sympathise with her as the story developed) whose story begins as they emigrate from 1920's Italy to America, but it is so much more than that.

This is a poignant family saga exploring the ties that bind the extended Bertozzi family on both sides of the Atlantic. (You may need to refer to the list of characters at the front of the book often in order to keep track of them, as I did.) Each character in the family has a unique, strong character who, while passionate, fierce and lovable, are flawed as they display jealousy, anger, remorse and resentment. However, these same people find within themselves forgiveness, compassion, and the meaning of family loyalty.

This is gripping memoir written in a beautiful, lyrical style, without ever becoming overly sentimental. The reader can immediately identify with the complex emotions and relationships we can have within the family.

In the prologue, Heather Siegal describes a visit to her father, who is still living in ‘the underworld’ of the title—the dark and dank basement of his parents’ house. One of the most poignant and telling passages in the book is found on page 2, speaking of her young daughter, “She smiles four teeth. She loves her Grandpa as much as I do, even if she can count on one spider hand the number of times she’s seen him.”

It's starting to feel like summer here in Montreal! We went from winter coats to shorts. So typical. We never really get spring. But I finally did get spring fever and started decluttering, cleaning and organizing. Felt soooo good, but I've got a ways to go. And BEA is just around the corner. YAY! Anyone going?
