The Marriage of Miss Jane Austen (Volume 1) by Collins Hemingway (Review)

When I read the reviews for this novel and discovered it's the first book in a trilogy, I knew I wanted to read all three books. Check out what I thought of this first book in the The Marriage of Miss Jane Austen trilogy.

Book Details:

Book Title: The Marriage of Miss Jane Austen (Volume 1) by Collins Hemingway
Category: Adult Fiction, 200 pages
Genre: Historical Fiction,
Publisher: Createspace
Release date: February 9, 2018
Content Rating: PG-13 (The book includes a sex scene between a married couple, tastefully and poetically described)

Book Description:

The Marriage of Miss Jane Austen is highly praised historical fiction built on the life of Jane Austen. Volume I is a charming courtship novel that hews carefully to her known life while telling the story of a love that might have been during the mysterious gaps in that record.

The full trilogy resolves the mystery of Austen’s life during the “missing years” of her twenties:

• Why the enduring rumors of a lost love or tragic affair?

• Why, afterward, did the vivacious Jane prematurely put on the “garb of middle age” and retire to write her books?

• Why, upon her death, did her beloved sister destroy her letters and journals?

An accurate rendering of her life and tumultuous times, The Marriage of Miss Jane Austen fills in the blanks of Austen’s “lost years” with a riveting love story that also engages the protagonist in the most important and dramatic events of the Regency era. It tells of a marriage to a man equal to her intelligence, character, and passion—a relationship her straight-laced Victorian nieces and nephews were happy to lose in the mists of time.

My Review:
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani

When I read the reviews for this novel and discovered it's the first book in a trilogy, I knew I wanted to read all three books. I was delighted to receive a copy and I delved into it anticipating a good read. I was not disappointed.

The story begins with some exciting action as Jane impulsively gets into a hot air balloon with childhood friend Ashton Dennis, which resulted in an adventure and the unexpected beginning of a courtship that Jane was wholly unprepared for. Author Collins Hemingway boldly portrays both Jane and Ashton with all their flaws and insecurities, which made their romance fairly different and more realistic than the typical romance stories out there.

The writing style is similar to that of Jane Austen's own writings and I could see how the author's imagination skilfully used some of the plots from Austen's own books as experiences that this Jane character encounters and would later use in writing her own books. The book is divided into three parts and the second part is written only in letters, which I thought was a clever way of building on the relationship between Jane and Ashton.

This was an excellent beginning to a trilogy I look forward to completing. Seeing that these books are based on Jane Austen's life and we know how it ends, I'm curious as to how the author will portray Jane's married life and more.

My Review:
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani

Sovereignty by Anjenique Hughes is a YA dystopian novel set in the 23rd century where a totalitarian government rules and controls people's lives through an identity chip implanted in their wrists soon after birth. It's the first book in a trilogy that has a satisfying ending, while making the way for the second book, which I look forward to reading. For a debut novel, Sovereignty was very good and kept my attention throughout.

As I was reading it, I couldn't help but be reminded of the Nazi regime. There is something so compelling about reading how humanity strives to overcome conditions meant to crush the human spirit. The world-building is good and it's done through the eyes of  Goro, an 18 year-old who has a loving family with two siblings: a 5 year-old brother Josiah (I loved his character and was glad the author included him) and Stephanie, his teen sister who is about to graduate.

Because it's written in first person POV, we really get to know Goro the main protagonist well. He is a strong character who cares about others. He has a sensitive side but also a quick temper and acts with impulsiveness and a lack of maturity at times, typical of teens his age. He was such a realistic character, well drawn out, who grew on me. We get to see how tragedy and the need for change in his world helped him to grow into the young man that would be instrumental in bringing about that change.

Because the story is told by Goro, even serious situations are tempered by his humour and boyish antics. I had to look up several words in the urban dictionary (or asked my kids what they meant!) and realised how much language has evolved since I was a teen. Being a high school teacher, I can see how the author was able to create a believable male teen character, from his language to his actions.

Sovereignty explores themes of friendship, family, leadership and the right to rule. The author starts every chapter with a quote which I loved. Throughout the novel, references were made to cultural icons and expressions of our century which I thought distracted from the world of the 23rd century. A few would have been fine, but in order for the reader to be totally immersed in the new dystopian world, new expressions and ideologies need to be reaffirmed to make sure as a reader I don't leave that new world.

Do not be deterred by the book's cover, if like me, you are not fond of depictions of  youngsters with guns. I think a symbol, like the one of the cover of The Hunger Games or the Legend trilogy by Marie Lu would be more fitting as it would appeal to a wider audience since the YA genre is read by all ages. If you like dystopian novels, this one is a great start to its trilogy. I look forward to reading Triunity, the second book in which Goro's sister will play a bigger role.

Banished (Forbidden #2) by Kimberley Griffiths Little

Kimberley Griffiths Little did it again. She deftly swept me away once more into Jayden's world. Into that unforgiving hot desert, with the discovery of love once again and the enemy in close pursuit.

Book Description:

She thought she’d lost everything . . .

After spending months traveling the harsh, unforgiving Mesopotamian desert, Jayden reunites with a broken, injured Kadesh. Although everyone was convinced the violent and unpredictable Horeb, Jayden’s betrothed, killed the handsome prince, Jayden knew in her heart that her love was alive and safe. But their reunion is short-lived, as they learn Horeb is on their trail and determined to take back the girl he has claimed. Soon, the two star-crossed lovers are on the run toward Sariba, Kadesh’s homeland, where, as heir to the Kingdom, he plans to make Jayden his princess.

But the trek to Sariba is fraught with heartache and danger. After narrowly escaping being stoned to death for a crime she didn’t commit, and learning that her sister has disappeared, Jayden’s only solace is her love for Kadesh. But even he is keeping secrets from her . . . secrets that will change everything.

This gorgeous and enchanting sequel to Forbidden, is full of love, danger, and heated passion that will leave readers breathless.

My Review:
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani

Yes, Forbidden left me breathless. It was one of those books that took me away and made me experience all kinds of emotions. Set in the ancient Mesopotamian desert, it contains a plot full of intrigue, romance, danger, adventure and a shocking cliffhanger ending. I was, therefore, waiting all year for its sequel Banished. Once I got my hands on Banished, I hesitated to start reading it. Would it be as good as the first one?

Well Kimberley Griffiths Little did it again. She deftly swept me away once more into Jayden's world. Into that unforgiving hot desert, with the discovery of love once again and the enemy in close pursuit.  Horeb, Jayden's former betrothed, will not give up until he gets what he wants. He is vengeful and has accumulated power and will stop at nothing to pursue his lust for more power. Jayden is his key to that power and he will use her to his advantage before killing her.

Jayden is such a real character, a young woman dealing with the loss of her family, tribe and position. She pursues what is right and uses her courage to protect and rescue those she loves, even at great cost to herself. She is selfless and vulnerable, beautiful and strong, smart and feisty. She escapes and there is the hope of better things ahead even with Horeb nipping at her heels as she flees.

The reader easily feels her emotions and we mourn and rejoice with her throughout. The author truly captures desert life and the powerful intrigue of the pagan gods worshipped in those days. Having studied the Bible for 25 years, I picked up all kinds of references to the life of those who lived in the Mesopotamian lands that much of it seemed familiar to me. The author also made many references to key scenes from the first book so that it easily came to mind and I can see how some will continue in the third book.

Once again, we experience various plot twists and just when you think things are going well, danger spills forth and we are cast again into gut-wrenching scenes. As in the first book, the ending is another cliffhanger preparing us for the final installment when Jayden and Kadesh's story will climax. I groaned as I turned the last page thinking that I have to wait another year before I can once again delve into this world so different from mine, so full of memorable characters and exotic places.

If you're a fan of YA and historical fiction that has a great cast of characters and plenty of action, romance and adventure, then this is the perfect book in which to escape. This book made it on my Best Books of 2016 list. I highly recommend reading Forbidden first and then Banished. And I cannot wait to read the final book that will bring it all to an amazing conclusion, no doubt.

Read my review of Forbidden.

A few months back I reviewed The Publicist (Book One) by Christina George, a book that has become popular among bloggers because of its inside view on the publishing industry.

I was looking forward to Shelf Life (Book 2) because the first book left some unanswered questions and I wanted to know where Kate's life was headed. Well, I can say that Shelf Life was even better than the first book. The characters were more fully developed, the publishing schemes more devastating and the romantic tangle more intense and emotional. Unlike with the first book, I was more emotionally invested with the characters' lives this time.

The Publicist by Christina George (Audiobook Review and $100 Amazon Gift Card Giveaway!)

The Publicist by Christina George
Audible
Released Oct 30, 2014
Narrator: Lisa Cordileone
Length: 5 hours 54 minutes
Unabridged

So I've heard a lot about this book, read countless reviews and was curious to read a novel whose main character is a publicist. Now that I work very closely with authors, publicist and publishers, promoting their titles, I was even more curious.

I can see why this book is so popular with book bloggers. The Publicist gives you an inside look at the book publishing and marketing industry. And, man is it ever interesting! Especially since the author has said in a past interview that a lot of what is in this book has actually happened. And as unbelievable as some of it may seem I can certainly see it happening, and even more so today as the industry of book publishing is getting more and more competitive and publicists have to be both counselors and strategists to get the work done.

Kate is a great publicist. She loves her job and she goes out of her way to get her authors the best publicity. She's got good gut instincts when it comes to her work and is kind and compassionate, even with the authors "whose—oh, I love this saying!—"ego has landed!" Yeah, I've spoken to a few of those writers who simply can't believe no one wants to publish their masterpiece or read their book.

Mac, the sexy editor, works with Kate and respects her and her work. Then about halfway through the novel, we meet Nicolas, the sunny blond Californian who is the nephew of Alan Lavigne. I liked Alan a lot. He was a brilliant one-time best-selling author who now lived alone, was depressed and was supposed to be writing his second novel. Kate checked up on him and they had a beautiful friendship. He was her confidant when it came to the world of publishing. Grace was the perfect best friend, giving Kate wise advise even though Kate didn't always take it.

For me the best part about this book was that the story revolved around Kate's colorful job. The Publicist is a revelatory look at book publishing. I'm not a huge fan of contemporary romance, I prefer historical romance, but I do read it from time to time. So what about the romance in this novel? Okay, I'll be honest. It drove me nuts! The main reason is that it happened too fast. I love my romance full of tension, full of angst, till I'm bursting to find out if they'll get together. Kate fell into bed with Mac very easily, too easily, she was an easy conquest. And the best part about romance is the conquest.

I also don't like reading books about extramarital affairs. Mac is married and he has an affair with Kate, but to be fair, his marriage has been one in name only for twenty years. Yeah, you heard right. He hasn't slept with his wife in twenty years because she shunned him after a traumatic experience of which he also suffered and was not at fault. So they stayed together for appearance sake. His boys are in college now and he still won't leave his wife whom he barely sees because she doesn't live in NYC where he does. So for me, Mac's wife broke the sanctity of her marriage way before Mac did when he eventually started having discreet affairs. Still, I questioned why Mac would not leave her.

I also questioned why Kate who now is in love with Mac, goes and does something totally disloyal! And she seems to breeze through this, again with little emotional angst, making the whole romance thing...a bit unrealistic. Grrr...this was frustrating! Kate was more intelligent than this, and it was a big faux pas in my eyes. I wanted to shake her. But we love flawed characters don't we? We want them to do the right thing, make the right decisions that will make them happy, and they take us in on a roller coaster ride when they don't.

The book ends with several loose plot threads. It's a short novel with a narration that lasted about 6 hours. It left me with many questions, and it leaves the reader wanting to read the second book. The narrator Lisa Cordileone did a very good job. I loved how she made Kate and Mac sound. Sometimes the male character voices were grating and a bit off, but this was minor. I'm glad she will be continuing the narration for the two next books because now I have Kate's voice in my head.

So if you love the world of books and want an insider view on publishing, you will get it in this book. Be prepared for explicit sex scenes, religious profanities and lots of f-bombs, way more than was necessary. It marred my listening experience. But if that doesn't bother you, there is also humor, some witty comebacks and plenty of the New York way of life.

Note: This book is rated S = explicit sex scenes and P = Profanity, mainly f-bombs and religious expletives.

Christina George has worked in publishing for twenty years (give or take). Here’s what this book isn't. It’s not a slam against publishing (though it is broken) and it’s not a slam against authors (though some of them are crazy). This book is not autobiographical though many of the stories are true. No you won’t know which ones, cause it’s more fun to guess, right? Into the Still Blue by Veronica Rossi

Into the Still Blue by Veronica Rossi
Harper
ISBN: 978-0062072092
Published January 28, 2014
Hardcover, 400 pages

Into the Still Blue is the last book in the Under the Never Sky trilogy. I wanted to finally read the ending to one of my favorite trilogies and I'm glad I did. This is not a stand-alone book, however, and you would need to read the first two books to know what is going on. If you like YA dystopian novels, don't hesitate to read this trilogy. You can read my review of Under the Never Sky and Through the Ever Night.

Once again, Aria and Perry must band together so save their people. The Aether storms are devastating the land and killing everything in their path. Time is running out to find the Still Blue, a safe haven where they can all start over and live peacefully in what they heard is a beautiful land.

Cinder is the key to getting there, but he has been abducted by their enemy. Aria and Perry know they have to race to save him and get to the Still Blue in time. It's not easy with the Dwellers and Outsiders mistrusting one another. What's more, Perry's closest friend Roar is grieving the loss of Liv and he is very angry with Perry. All these issues, along with their plan to infiltrate the huge compound of their enemy makes for an action-packed and emotional story.

Rossi raises the stakes in this last book and brings it to a satisfying conclusion. This one is not as atmospheric as the first book, which was my favorite of all three books. It deals with grief, the loyalty of true friendships and redemption. This was a strong trilogy and I can't wait to see what else Veronica Rossi comes up with.

Note: This book is rated V = violence from fight scenes and beatings. There is a sex scene, non-explicit.

Brava Valentine by Adriana Trigiani (Audiobook Review)

Brava Valentine by Adriana Trigiani
Harper Audio
Released: February 9, 2010
Narrator: Cassandra Campbell
Length: 11 hrs 24 mins
Unabridged

After reading Very Valentine a few years ago (read my review), I knew I wanted to read Brava Valentine, the second book in the trilogy. However, I never got around to it. But then Trigiani herself sends me the third book and I knew I just HAD to read the second before I dug into The Supreme Macaroni Company. So I borrowed the audiobook at the library. I loved this second book!

Brava Valentine continues the story of Valentine and her Italian-American family. Teodora, the grandmother, is now newly married and has left the Angelini Shoe Company to Valentine and her brother. Valentine, who does not get along with her brother isn’t happy about this but several life lessons are learned on both their parts as they work to expand the company. Gianluca is back in the picture and Valentine has to decide if she wants to pursue a relationship or not. And then, there is the surprising discovery of relatives from her grandfather’s side that grew apart years ago because of a family rift.

This book had it all: family drama, friendships, romance and self-discovery. Once again, Trigiani had me roaring with laughter at the beginning of this novel with her reintroduction to Valentine’s family. The beginning of her first book had the same effect on me. Trigiani explores family faults, quirks and relationships so well. Every family, of course, has crazy moments and situations, and I can certainly relate to Italian families and their drama. Valentine misses her grandmother who now lives in Italy, and she must deal with serious family issues. She is independent and smart but also kind and devoted to her family and friends.

I liked how Valentine grew as a character in this book. She knows how to make good friends and keep them, but she has trouble with the love department. Gianluca is older than Valentine, a mature man who is in love with Valentine but who allows her to discover what she wants. He was so swoon worthy! Now that brings me to Cassandra Campbell, the narrator of this book. She was awesome! She was able to do all the different voices of both men and women, the distinct New York accent and of course, the Italian accent that was so sexy on Gianluca. I also loved the Italian phrases throughout the story, and Campbell pronounced them well.

I’m so glad I decided to listen to this book because it really brought the characters alive for me. Now I’m ready to delve into the third book to see how it all continues and comes to an end. Trigiani truly knows how to create interesting, flawed, and honest characters we come to care about. I didn’t feel this so much in the first book, even though I liked it, so I was very pleased this story gripped me more. I can’t wait to see how Valentine handles the upcoming challenges in her life with the next book!

Note: This book is rated P = Profanity for some mild religious expletives.
