Top Ten Tuesday: Non-Bookish Hobbies

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. 10 is just a suggestion to aim for if you can hit it. You can do a list of 3 or 5 or 20, whatever you decide. And you can put a spin on the topic if you need to. Each week there is a new list to create. This week's topic is:

Non-Bookish Hobbies

Apart from reading, I love doing other stuff. There's not enough time in my allotted 24-hours to do all I'd like but I'm content to do these:

1. Biking: I've been biking since I was a kid. Sometimes because of life events (pregnancies, sickness or cold winters) I do much less, but it's an activity I try to pursue a lot during the summer. I don't participate in marathons, but I love biking for the freedom it allows me to feel and the nature it allows me to explore.

2. Volunteering: I'm involved in a world-wide Bible educational work where I volunteer to do Bible studies with individuals who want to know more about the Bible. This has allowed me to meet thousands of people and I've made friends world-wide. I've been doing this for 30 years now.

3. Cooking: Because I like to eat well, I look for different ways to cook. I make all my soups from scratch, including tomato sauce and casseroles. I love using spices and I like to make tasty, flavorful dishes.

4. Travelling: I love visiting new places, whether in my own city or across the planet. Learning about different cultures, languages and traditions fascinates me.

5. Holistic Lifestyle: I started exploring this when I was first diagnosed with fibromyalgia over 20 years ago. I use homeopathic remedies with my family and I eat organic and wholesome foods (as much as possible anyway!) I try to exercise regularly and practice mindfulness.

6. Psychology: Learning about mental health, cognitive behavioural therapy, and neuroplasticity is a hobby I took up around the time when I experienced post-partum depression. I recently downloaded the Bloom app and I'm loving it.

7. Taking up Projects: I get excited at the prospect of starting new projects. Throughout the years I've organized 8 full-costume production plays for my kids that they played in front of an audience and even an "Amazing Race" day for the 30 kids in our congregation.

8. Teas and Chocolate: I like discovering and tasting the vast varieties of teas and gourmet chocolates available.

9. Organizing: Currently, I'm reorganizing my house and trying to be more minimalist. I'm also organizing my collection of spices and teas. It's a fun way to declutter too.

10: Music: Listening to music is a way for me to relax, de-stress or to get my body moving. I like to sing so I practice singing while listening to my favorite music. I listen to music in French and Italian too.

How about you? Do we have anything in common?

  1. I like psychology, too. It's interesting to figure out how the mind works and how to help yourself (or when to know to seek professional help if needed. :) )

Have you ever tried the Happify app? I find it very helpful for my seasonal affective disorder (along with other things).

    My post.

  2. Biking is one of those fun hobbies that can last a life time. It doesn't matter how much time is in between sessions either.

    1. So true...I usually bike from May to October and it always feels familiar no matter how much time has passed since my last ride.

  3. I love the volunteering project you are part of. May you be blessed! I've studied psychology, so yes it still remains something I am always very interested in.

Teas and Chocolate! What a great idea!

Happy TTT and here's my The Collected Works of Elza Reads

  4. I like tea, but more in the way that I like... breathing! I run on tea! I don't enjoy cleaning, but I've been trying to be more minimalist as well. Tough when I have half of my parents' things that my twenty something daughters want when they get their own homes!

    1. I miss travelling too. Our trip to Italy was postponed by the airline so I can't wait until we can finally fly again.

  12. Even though we travel for my husband's job, we miss "real travel" that involves flying to a new destination for a week or two. We've ventured out for a few weekends but even that is a little stressful since we worry that we're being irresponsible. I try to look at the area and see if they're requesting visitors stay away and we always wear our masks and clean our hotel room ourselves before we even take our masks off. The extra stress has kept us closer to our home base than we're used to though. Oh well. At least more people are safe and we have future trips to dream about!

We had to get even more organized and minimalist than we already were when we started traveling. We live in our RV while my husband's working so it's only 300-350 sq ft (28-32 sq m), as opposed to our house which is about 1600 (148). We have a storage unit with our furniture and other important things in it while our house is rented out but we still donated a lot of stuff. It's pretty liberating to realize how little you actually need though. We think we'll probably buy a smaller house or condo once we decide to stop traveling.

    1. I agree that travelling during the pandemic is stressful and we just need to wait it out to when we can finally truly travel.

It's true that when you get used to living with less, it can be liberating. I'm at this point in my life, the less I have the better I feel.
