Sunday Post, Sunday Salon, Mailbox Monday and It's Monday What Are You Reading? Sept 7 Edition

Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba at Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share our news. A post to recap the past week on your blog and showcase books and things we have received. Share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead.

Sunday Salon hosted by Readerbuzz is simply a place for us to link up and to share what we have been doing during the week. Sunday Salon is a great way to visit other blogs and join in the conversations going on there.

I read two books this past week, both with themes revolving around libraries. The first was The Lions of Fifth Avenue by Fiona Davis, which unfortunately, I did not enjoy. I ended up slamming the book shut in frustration about halfway through. The other was The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes which I absolutely loved and which filled me with so many emotions as I contemplated the plight of the brave Packhorse librarians. Both books explored the value of books and feminism, but one did it through integrity, kindness, and loyalty while the other seemed to disregard all of these.

Apart from this, I'm taking it one day at a time as I nervously read reports that the list of schools with coronavirus cases in Quebec is now at 50.

Hope you are all well. Stay safe and take care of each other.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. It's a great post to organize yourself. It's an opportunity to visit and comment, and er... add to that ever-growing TBR pile! So welcome in everyone. This meme started with J Kaye's Blog and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date.

What I reviewed and/or featured last week:

I read the book and now I've listened to it on audio too, which brought the story to life even more!

  1. I'm so sad that you were so disappointed with Lions of Fifth Avenue. One of my friends is a big fan of the author (and her mother was in our book club) and she has requested it from the library. I'll be curious what she thinks about this book.

I must add Giver of Stars to my wish list. It sounds like a book I'd enjoy.

Oh my. Fifty schools in Quebec with cases of coronavirus? That's frightening. But, even worse, I bet these won't be reported here.

I hope you have a good week.

    1. I really wanted to like The Lions of Fifth Avenue and I kept forging on but finally I just didn't like the main characters enough to continue.

  2. We discussed reading THE GIVER of STARS for book club but opted for other selections because there is a bit of a controversy around it. Glad to know you liked it. My Sunday Salon posting

    1. I read about the controversy and there's no way Moyes copied someone else's book. It would have been further explored especially since she is a big author.

  3. I think you are sensible in saying a day at a time, I just heard on the news that the UK cases have spiked quite a bit in 24 hours. Who knows what’ll happen this week.

    Have a lovely week.

  4. I have the Moyes book on my wish list. I read The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek earlier this summer and really liked it. I think there's room for more than one novel on the subject so I'm looking forward to seeing how Moyes portrays it.

  5. I have been eyeing The Giver of Stars so I am glad that you liked that. Sorry about the other. I find it hard to DNF too.
I hope you continue to stay safe and enjoy your reading!

  6. I worry so much about the schools too, especially as I hear back reports of cases at ours. I hope things go well in your area.

    Take care this week!

  7. Hi Laura,

I don't think I have ever not finished a book, even if I have pushed on to the end and then wondered why! It must be the stubborn streak in me that just won't give up! The trouble is, when a book has been hyped up by everyone and then and then I don't enjoy it in quite the same way, I get to thinking it must just be me!

I hope that your reading plans for this week are more to your liking, I really like the sound of 'The Sea Gate', so I shall be interested to see what you make of that one.

Stay Safe if you have to get out and about and have a peaceful week :)

    Yvonne xx

  8. Oh, no, I am sorry to hear about The Lions of Fifth Avenue, as I was considering reading that one. But now I can add The Giver of Stars, a title that wasn't even on my radar. Thanks!

I am sorry that the coronavirus cases are higher. Ours are beyond high, of course, but after six months of lockdown, I'm starting to get into the rhythm of it. Sigh.

Stay safe, and thanks for sharing. Here are my WEEKLY UPDATES

  9. Sadly, I am not surprised about all the schools with COVID. Things are just going to be this way for awhile I think. But it's not forever and we are comfortable at home here. Happy reading!

  10. I hope the cases in Quebec don't get much worse. My school system back home decided to do all remote learning for now. I think that was a wise decision. But teachers are required to be in the school building. I don't think that makes much sense, but at least the kids are home.

How lovely to be in Quebec! My husband and I visited Quebec for the first time last summer. I absolutely loved the city and would love to visit again. Enjoy your week!

  11. I hope the number of cases, especially in the schools, begin to go down soon. Schools where I live are all virtual still, which is probably for the best right now.

I am sorry The Lions of Fifth Avenue didn't work for you. That is one I have been looking forward to. I haven't read Moyes' novel, although I've heard of it. Have you read Woman of Troublesome Creek? I hear that one is similar and good as well.

I hope you have a great week! Happy reading.
