My Review
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani

Part memoir, part social commentary and history lesson, Newspaper Boys Always Deliver is a a nostalgic and in-depth look at how our world has changed in the last fifty years, written by Canadian professor turned entrepreneur Joseph Gulesserian.

Gulesserian was a newspaper boy in the late sixties into early seventies, when I was a toddler. I missed being a baby boomer by a few years but I could relate to many of the events, changes and reflections discussed in this book. Gulesserian is at once humourous as he is witty and sarcastic, but it's the emotions he emanates that makes this an interesting read when it could have been dry and boring.

Gulesserian divides his book into sections much like a newspaper, with the Front-page News, followed by People Section, Arts & Entertainment, News, Sports, Lifestyle, Business & Technology, and finally the Editorial & Comment section: a testimonial and forerunner to the creative way the information in this book is discussed.

It's not a book one needs to read in chronological order or completely for that matter, much like the newspaper. There is so much information in this book that you can choose what you want to read. You can flip over to your favorite section, and skip any subject you don't care about, again, much like one would do with a newspaper. I found, much to my surprise, however, that each section had something that captivated me, even the Sports section, with that famed hockey game that took place in my city of Montreal.

I was amused at Gulesserian's take on villains and heroes, mainly through dissecting each character of the Batman series. I was intrigued by the history of disco and other music history such as the British Invasion with the Beatles. Being an entrepreneur myself, I liked the Business and Technology section, with the in-depth discussion on the evolution of emails and social media but the younger generation may not appreciate his opinions on how this has affected them. Mostly, I found his take as the son of immigrant parents who came of age in the seventies from a male perspective interesting. Although I may not have agreed with his views on everything, it was a thought-provoking read.

Baby boomers, history buffs, and lovers of information will enjoy Gulesserian's journey and his insightful essays through a world that has undergone major and staggering changes. The implications are both breathtaking and utterly scary.
