Nature's Confession packages environmental concerns in a YA sci-fi book. Our heroes’ world, ruined by villains who profit through environmental disaster, take it upon themselves to change what is wrong in their world. Forcing them to live as outcasts. And yet, as with any good cause, unexpected alliances show up from the most unexpected places, in this case the universe, as one would expect in a good sci-fi / cli-fi novel.

The story takes place in the not too distant future when our hero ‘Boy’ dreams of encountering the girl in his dreams. Instead, he’s made to see the need to help the underground trying to save the world from those who would profit from polluting it. ‘Boy’ unexpectedly creates intelligent life and has to run from the law. When ‘Boy’ has nowhere to run, he is rescued by his father's clone and a leopard-skinned creature and taken to another world. But his relentless enemies don’t give up so easily and pursue him. The beginning reminded me of some elements of the Matrix movie.

The plot was good and original, although the world-building lacked some explanation, making me question a few things. The story was unpredictable with interspersed messages about the need to be environmentally conscious. This was the book’s strength, however, there were times I felt a disconnect from one scene to another. This tended to break the build-up of suspense.

Nature's Confession clearly shows our teens how humans can be both a force for good or bad when it comes to taking care of the Earth. The book’s provoking message intermingled with the need to make a difference, and to develop good friendships has much to offer those who enjoy this new genre of sci-fi. Hope to see more of it.

Note: This book is rated PG-13 for a gory and spiritistic sorority initiation rite scene.

I'm one of those people who likes reading self-help books, especially about time management and personal growth. I also like learning new things through non-fiction books. When this book came to my attention, I was curious. I'm not into yoga, but I do believe in consciousness. And this book is not about yoga at all.

The book cover shows a woman who is calm even while surrounded by chaos. So fitting for this topic. Self-awareness can bring us to this calmness and Jackie Woodside has written an easy to follow and effective guide on how to become productive by managing one's energy.

When I applied for my first job about 26 years ago, it was pretty obvious what an employer expected from me. But times have changed and what was taboo years ago is okay today so that the lines are blurred when it comes to work expectations. Jennifer Swanson, an expert in the field of communications and human relations has written a nifty book or perhaps I should call it a manual on how to stand out and shine in your new job.

Three months ago, I reviewed the first book in the Epic series by Lee Stephen called Dawn of Destiny, a military sci-fi action adventure story about alien invasion and a crew of men and women commissioned to protect the Earth. It was a good beginning to this series, but it was the full cast audiobook version of Dawn of Destiny with soundtrack that really impressed me and brought out Stephen's novel. You can read my review of it here. If you like listening to audiobooks of the sci-fi genre, you need to try this one.

Just recently, I borrowed a book from my good friend Laura Fabiani entitled Return to Food: The Life Changing Anti-Diet written by Sherry Strong. Although I have a night table with a stack of books that I intend to get through, I was drawn to take it. I believe it was the word "anti-diet" that intrigued me. With over 20 years experience in the field of kinesiology, I have seen way too many clients attempting to diet and fail. This, simply because most dietary short-term goals never cross over to true lifestyle changes. Understanding this problem is one thing but having the tools to create real change is something else. Sherry Strong's book is one such powerful tool.

This is an excellent book, a very emotional one. The title is perfect as it refers to a classic story that was made into a Broadway success, but with a different twist. The book cover is brilliant!

The story is told through the eyes of Bettina, a professor of Women's History in New York's ultra-liberal Upper West Side, and that of her 13-year-old son, Max. When Max becomes embroiled in controversy following an accident involving his best friend, Cyrus, who also happens to be black, racial hostility erupts engulfing their families and the community. Political tensions arising from the accident threaten to destroy people and friendships especially that of white Bettina and black Viola, Cyrus' mother.

I was itching to read a good YA novel that was different and entertaining. Drawn by Chris Ledbetter was just that and more! Ledbetter was able to write a contemporary fiction novel with fantasy elements taken from and mixed with the art world. Picture A-ha's 1985's innovative music video of Take On Me, with its mix of real-life and pencil-sketch animated characters. That was so cool! And in turn I found Drawn to be just as unique and different from any YA book I've read. In many ways, this novel took me back to my high school years, when I first fell in love and drawing was one of my hobbies.

Kika the Upside-Down Girl is a fun, and really cool book that highlights the joy that children feel with the freedom that comes with propelling one's body upside down with flips, handstands and just plain tumbling. My son who loves to do just that--using my mattress as a trampoline--loved this book. He says kids who like to flip will be able to relate to Kika, as did he.
