My Review
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani
I'm one of those people who likes reading self-help books, especially about time management and personal growth. I also like learning new things through non-fiction books. When this book came to my attention, I was curious. I'm not into yoga, but I do believe in consciousness. And this book is not about yoga at all.
The book cover shows a woman who is calm even while surrounded by chaos. So fitting for this topic. Self-awareness can bring us to this calmness and Jackie Woodside has written an easy to follow and effective guide on how to become productive by managing one's energy.
I began reading this book with an open mind and a pen handy for underlining. I must say, I truly enjoyed reading it and meditating on its simple but profound truths. I underlined so many gems from this book. Here are some:
- Knowledge does not produce change. Knowledge applied produces change.
- All true inner work and change must begin with awareness.
- How you respond in any moment is determined by your level of consciousness
- Calming the chaos requires paying attention to how you are using and managing the energy within and around you
And I could go on and on...Jackie helps her readers in two ways. The first is that she takes the time to clarify what awareness and consciousness are and how we should view time. Understanding this is the first step to change. Then she provides some practical grids, inventories and tools to help us to apply this new knowledge and to assess ourselves. This book is part manual, therefore, and helps us to apply all the useful information it contains. You will be able to clarify and identify what drains your energy and what boosts your energy, and what your core values are so that you are living rather than just doing.
Because I have been studying the Bible for 25 years now, I already know what my core values are and I know that awareness leads to change. But I still do get overwhelmed and my life does get chaotic at times. This is usually when I fail to focus on feeding my spiritual self. I have been making an effort to practice being productive and focusing on accomplishing my secular work with value toward those that I interact with, and it does relieve me of any work stress. Calming the Chaos has reinforced this for me.
Jackie writes in a clear voice, with anecdotes of her personal coaching experience. The chapters are short so that you can read this book during work breaks and then contemplate the info throughout the day. If you are frantic, feel that you are always too busy, overwhelmed and frustrated with life, then this book will help you shift to a new paradigm. Rather than a quick fix, Calming the Chaos is a lifestyle changer that will benefit every aspect of it.
