I've owned a cat now for 6 years. We adopted Blaisy from an organization that saves cats who are missing a home. Blaisy had been found outdoors in the winter emancipated and frostbitten before she was rescued. They suspected she was an indoor cat that somehow had gotten lost or perhaps cruelly kicked out.

Two weeks ago I reviewed the print version of Dawn of Destiny, a military sci-fi action adventure story about alien invasion and a crew of men and women commissioned to protect the Earth. You can read my review here.

This time I was given the opportunity to listen to the audiobook version. Since I had already read the book, I wasn't sure how much more the audiobook was going to add to what I already knew of the story. Boy, was I wrong! This audiobook truly impressed me. It was a full cast audio with a full soundtrack. It added an emotional element to the experience of reading the novel and had me fully engaged.

Man, this was a hard week. I worked 10 hour days, helped my kids with mounting projects, put up with more cold and damp weather that felt like January all over again and then I lost my sweet cousin to cancer. She fought hard with no complaints, and my consolation is that she is no longer in pain.

Reading for Autism - April Book Challenge

Hi All! Spring is in the air and the sun is shining a whole lot more here, which means the snow is melting!

Time to try new things. I've decided to help Lindsay from Nighttime Reading Center with the Reading for Autism Challenge. I like to support various causes and Autism is one of them.

I hope you decide to join us as we raise funds for the Autism Foundation. How are we doing that? By reading, of course!

So how exactly does this challenge work? Basically, for every book you read that is in some way related to Autism or Aspergers, you agree to donate a certain amount. You only need to read 1 book as the minimum and the amount you want to donate is up to you. It can be as small as $1 per book or feel free to be as generous as you like.

Dawn of Destiny is a sci-fi novel about alien invasion set in the future. Although this genre has been done countless times before, Lee Stephen brings a fresh look on what is expected from the men and women defending the earth against such impossible odds. Stephen keeps the reader on edge wondering if our new recruits have what it takes to make it to the next battle.

So many great books being released this spring! How do we keep up? By staying organized and reading what we want. But it's fun to explore new titles too. That's what I'm doing this spring. :-)

This is the second book in the Tiny Tails series. My son and I read the first book Spark, which we really liked. You can read our review here. My son noticed that both books deal with mythical or historical creatures. The first one was about a dinosaur and this one about a phoenix, which pleased my son who has been fascinated lately with mythical creatures.

Even before reading the book, I had a chance to meet the octogenarian author of this fictionalized autobiography. I liked Irene immediately and loved her radiant smile and easy laughter. We spoke at length about her book and I promised I would read it. I didn't quite know what to expect, but it gripped me right from the start, and made me feel so many emotions that I finished it in no time. I was completely satisfied at the end because there was closure and it ended well.

YA has become one of my favorite genres. When this book came up for review, I was excited to be reading it. Perhaps my expectations were too high. The story line caught my attention right away. Stella has a beautiful singing voice and dreams of someday performing on Broadway, but an accident causes her to lose her hearing. Hayden is a boy in her school who stutters. They forge a friendship that helps them overcome the obstacles that hold them back. Sounds great, right? Unfortunately, I  began to struggle with this novel almost from the very beginning.

It’s 1858 in Bombay. Rebecca Ravenshaw leaves her beloved India following the murder of her missionary parents in the Indian Mutiny, to return to Headbourne, in Hampshire, England.  She expects to be welcomed to her former home, income and safety but finds that someone else has claimed her inheritance. Moreover, the “other Rebecca” has recently died under suspicious circumstances (why was she buried at midnight?) and Captain Whitfield, a distant relative, who happens to be handsome, charming and eligible, now lives in the family home. The real Rebecca must prove her own identity, confront the growing unease she experiences while doing so and cope with her attraction to the Captain. All the elements of a fantastic read! And what a beautiful, haunting book cover!

I'm currently working with Brent LeVasseur, a talented author who wrote and illustrated this MG sci-fi action adventure tale that has captured the attention of kids, teachers, moms and book bloggers. He's got fans of all ages who are gleefully enjoying the adventures of Gilbert and Aoléon the Martian girl.

When Brent first contacted me last October and told me about his 12-year project that was soon to be released in a five-part series, he asked me what I thought of the book and if I would be able to help him market it. Having read a slew of MG books with my kids I was quickly taken in with Aoléon The Martian Girl. The illustrations alone were just awesome.
