Book Description:

Homicide Detective Cameron Gates learned long ago that there is no such thing as a typical murder case. Each mystery is special in its own right—especially for the family of the victim. The homicide of a successful executive, husband, and father seems open and shut when the murder weapon is found in his estranged son-in-law’s possession. The circumstantial evidence is so damning that when her step-son, J.J. Thornton, agrees to act as the defendant’s public defender, he assumes his first murder case will be a loss. Only the report of a missing husband proves that this case is not as open and shut as it seems. Strap on your seat belts for a wild ride in this mystery rooted in decades of deception that sprouts into murder.

My Review:
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani

I have so far read the first three books in this series, and I was eager to revisit the characters in this fourth installment of the Lovers in Crime Mystery Series. I believe this one is my favorite in the series, with its clever plot and the twists and turns that are Carr's trademark. It's never what you think it is!

Joshua and Cameron are back to solving a murder mystery that quickly spirals into a complicated case that keeps readers on their toes. The narrative is punctuated with humourous scenes of furry characters that sometimes steal the show, like Charley, the rooster who terrorizes anyone with bad motives. And why not throw in the preparations to a wedding to remind us that these characters don't just solve mysteries; they are part of a loving family that act like a family with all that that implies. Izzy, the adopted daughter is as adorable as ever.

Lauren Carr certainly shows just how creative she is with coming up with interesting and complex plots that she ties together so well by the end of the book. Really, everything comes full circle. There are always several plots and backstories happening simultaneously and the reader can't help but try to find the connection between everything. And of course, characters from other books make appearances, so for readers like me who have read several books from all of Carr's series, this is always fun.

The Root of Murder is another winner from Lauren Carr. If you are a fan, you will get all that you expect from Lauren Carr's books. If you are new to her books, this one is a stand-alone. I would encourage you read the first book in the series, or Killer in the Band which is the book previous to this one that will introduce you to the couple J.J and Poppy. Warning though: once you start reading Lauren Carr's books they are addictive!
