Death Logs Out by E.J. Simon (Review and Giveaway!)

After reading Death Never Sleeps and Death Logs In, I was eager to read the third book in the series Death Logs Out, and I must say, I think so far it's the best one yet.

Book Description:

Is Alex Nicholas really dead?

Two years since the brutal shooting of Alex Nicholas, a gambling underworld boss in Queens, NYC. But his brother, Michael, a respected CEO, struggles with a secret: his murdered brother has been communicating with him via his laptop using AI. This AI-Alex can foresee dangers in Michael’s path, and appears to be trying to help him – even controlling machinery and electronics via WiFi. Meanwhile, trouble is stirring in the historic capital cities of Rome, Berlin and Paris. Inside the Vatican, Monsignor Kurt Schlegelberger has designs to build his power and prepare for the sudden ascension of the Free Forces Party, a throw-back to the Nazis.

Schlegelberger will stop at nothing, but first he must deal with a new threat: someone appears to know the true story behind a series of murders in the US, committed by clergy to cover their tracks of child abuse within the Church. Alex’s re-appearance puts Schlegelberger’s plans in jeopardy. Dead or alive, the way to finish off Alex for good can only be to get to his close family, namely his brother Michael…

This fast-paced third instalment of E.J. Simon’s Death series will keep readers guessing to the very end.

Praise for E.J. Simon

‘A fine technological thriller that only gets better as it goes along.’ – KIRKUS REVIEW

My Review:
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani

After reading Death Never Sleeps and Death Logs In, I was eager to read the third book in the series Death Logs Out, and I must say, I think so far it's the best one yet. We revisit all the characters from the previous books with a new villain in Monsignor Kurt Schlegelberger, who manipulates and controls his evil plots right from within the Vatican. So although Death Logs Out is a stand-alone, it won't have the same impact unless you've read the previous two books.

Two years after Alex's murder, his brother Michael is now thriving while juggling two positions. He is a respected Fortune 500 CEO and he is also the boss of Tartarus, his brother's former illegal gambling and loan sharking operation that Michael has expanded to Europe. Michael is no longer having an affair and has patched things up with his wife, but it doesn't mean he's no longer in contact with the dangerous woman who almost cost him everything.

The novel starts with a bang as Sindy Steele once again tries to get into his life. Michael is more cautious this time and although he maintains a distance, she knows too much. As with the first two novels, Michael is chased by his enemies who now know about Alex as an AI entity and want to destroy him. The question of whether Alex is really dead or maybe still alive somewhere continues in this novel. As is his trademark, the author includes mouthwatering scenes at various restaurants, making me hungry throughout the reading of this novel. And I am happy to say, this novel had much less profanity than the previous two books.

Once again, this fast-paced thriller kept me hooked. The suspense regarding Alex was strong right until the very last page of the novel, which makes me think there is another book in the works in this series. E.J. Simon's novels are thrilling, transporting the reader into a dangerous world where there's non-stop action with the constant presence of artificial intelligence as a means to live forever and what this means for those lacking faith in God's promise of an earthly paradise.
