Lauren Carr takes fans of the Mac Faraday mysteries to the Big Apple in this nail biting adventure. In Cancelled Vows David, Mac, and Gnarly, too, rush to New York City to dissolve David's marriage to an old girlfriend – and he's got five days to get it done. My Review:
Reviewed by Sandra Olshaski

I am a first-time reader of Lauren Carr novels. This is a fast-paced whodunit full of colorful characters, quirky developments, NYC police corruption, murder, humor, and romance.

Among the main characters is Mac Faraday, a retired homicide detective who has inherited a fortune, his half-brother David O'Callaghan, Chief of Police in a small town, and Mac's German Shepherd, Gnarly.

My favorite character is Gnarly, who is a trained military and law-enforcement officer – the only K-9 dishonorably discharged from the US army! When he eats a box containing two wedding rings (he's a thief), it's a waiting game to see if they will "appear".

My second favorite character (and there are a lot of characters) is Ali Hudson, a lanky Texan brunette with a southern drawl, with plenty of "y"alls."  Not only beautiful, she has a biting wit and a wicked sense of humor. In reference to a murder suspect, she says "when it comes to competence, he couldn't knock a hole in the wind with a sackful of hammers."  Or, says Ali about herself, "I'm so hungry I could eat the sign off a hamburger stand."

All in all, the plot is good; the characters are real, with plenty of twists and turns in their personal lives. I appreciated the character list at the outset as I frequently referred to it.

As you can expect from a mystery, bodies pile up. I was surprised at the descriptive violence of some of the deaths. And, although there are no explicit sex scenes, there is verbal sexual innuendo between Ali and David O'Callaghan.

This book will appeal to mystery lovers and Mac Faraday fans alike.
