Really Good F Words: Your Interactive Guide to Self-Care by Lorrie Forde (Review and Giveaway)

Self-care. Such an important word and yet so often forgotten. Why? Possibly because we live in a harried world, trying to make ends meet while raising our families and taking care of our daily work and responsibilities. So when this book came along with a catchy title and an opportunity to reflect on my own self-care I was keen to read it. Here is a description of the book followed by my review.

My Review:
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani

This non-fiction self-help book is aptly titled. It is truly an interactive guide, much like a workbook that you can use with a pen and highlighter, jotting down your personal thoughts and answering questions as life coach Lorrie Forde guides you along.

Self-awareness is so important and I learned this as I fought my post-partum depression after the birth of my second child. It takes a long time to learn how to push those negative, destructive thoughts away and replace them with positive ones. Forde shows you it's possible. But you need to give yourself the possibility to think things through even when you would rather escape or accept that you just can't do what you dream in life. And this is what this book does; giving you the chance in a step-by-step approach to uncover your own customized strategies to move forward successfully in life.

It's clear that Forde wants to help people because this book is written as if a coach were guiding you, encouraging you along with good solid reasoning, inspiring quotes and sharing the stories of others who have learned the tools to get past internal and external barriers.

When I read on p. 39 Forde's mantra that "The best thing about a mind is that it can change," I knew this book was a gem. All my research on neuroplasticity says precisely the same thing and so does the Bible in Romans 12: 12, "...be transformed by making your mind over."

But apart from this, Forde's enthusiasm and joy for life comes through beautifully. Really good f-words, such as fun, family and  friends are in bold throughout the text and subconsciously we assimilate them as we read. What a neat way to make us focus on these positive words!

This is a book that is not meant to just be read. It is meant to move you to action, to get you to think and ponder on how you deal with self talk and barriers that keep you stuck. It will help you develop self-awareness which is key to change. It's a book that can be referred to periodically especially during times in our lives when we experience life-changing events that we have a hard time coping with.

I'm currently using this book and I will continue to use it. I think it is an excellent guide for anyone suffering from depression, anxiety, self-doubt and inflicted self-guilt. Sound familiar? Give yourself a break and start truly taking care of YOU by looking inward. You are not alone.

  1. Laura, thank you so much for your insightful review!

You've captured the essence of coaching, and my intention with this book, in your comment about being called to action in spite of whatever barriers (internal or external) may be in the way of forward movement. One of the things that I love about my work as a coach (either business or personal) is that no matter what the topic or a client's current reality, when that client decides they'd like to focus forward...they can. As their coach I get to come along for the ride as their confidential, non-judgmental, thinking partner who guides the process and helps them hear themselves as they come up with their own best answers. Throughout the coaching experience I get to watch people's minds change and motivation deepen as their perspective shifts through the process of exploring their interests in the pursuit of their own unique goal.

I invite you to stay in contact if you'd like to share more about your journey with Really Good F Words as you continue to explore your own best answers to the questions and action the book invites.

  2. Laura, your review makes me want to go out and grab this book NOW! At 69 and counting to 70, I still struggle with depression left over from an abusive childhood and first marriage. Lorrie's book sounds like what I need to find that balance my life has always seemed to lack. If I weren't an iRead tour host, I'd enter to win, but I don't think that's fair at all. Amazon here I come! Thanks for a very thoughtful review and one that gives me a Bible-based mantra to cling to.
