Ricky Vargas #2: Born to be Funny by Alan Katz, illustrated by Stacy Curtis
Scholastic Inc.
ISBN: 978-0545313964
Publication date: February 2013
Paperback, 80 pages
Ricky Vargas is a second grader who is known by his classmates to be the funniest kid in the world. This second book in the series (we didn't read the first one), contains three short stories with wonderful cartoon illustrations. Each story teaches a simple lesson.
My son read this, loved the illustrations but thought the stories were just okay. I guess after reading books like Tom Gates, Wimpy Kid and Big Nate, he didn't think Ricky Vargas was all that funny. The book is targeted for 4-8 year-olds, but my son who is almost 9 argued with me that it really is more for the younger kids in that age range.
I thought the stories were cute. Coupled with the cartoons they make this book a good choice for reluctant readers.
Note: This book is rated C = clean read.
