Walk With Me by Debra Schoenberger (Review, Author Interview & Giveaway!)

I am thrilled to once again feature photographer (and my long-time friend) Debra Schoenberger's fourth photography book. Check it out and enter to win a copy!

Book Details:

Book Title: Walk with Me by Debra Schoenberger
Category: Adult non-fiction / Photography - 104 pages
Genre: Documentary / Street Photography / Travel
Publisher: Blurb
Release date: December 26, 2017
Tour dates: March 5 to 23, 2018
Content Rating: G

Book Description:

Whenever I'm asked, "which is the best camera?" I pretty much respond: "the one you have on you." In fact, most of the images in this book were taken with my cell phone simply because I always have it with me.

This is not only a book about street photography but a visual diary, or collection of quirky, unusual and sometimes just plain weird photos I've taken over the course of the last decade.

As a street photographer, I need to be an assiduous walker. My sneakers often take me to little known, hidden corners, seaweed strewn (and sometimes stinky) beaches and really cool back alleys of my rather small island city of Victoria, BC.

I've also included images of curiosities I've seen throughout my travels.

Everyone sees the world differently and this is my collection of the quirkiness that I call life.

Walk With Me is blogger/photographer Debra Schoenberger's fourth photography book. With such a captivating title we are invited to see street photography through Schoenberger's lens, capturing scenes and objects to which most of us might not pay more than a cursory glance. Once again, I found Schoenberger's photography to be unique and sometimes quirky.

I loved her pics of flowers, nature, architectural structures and lone figures perched up within a building's window or balcony. Her black and white pics are poignant. I also recognized street pics of my city Montreal. She includes pics of her worldwide travels, among them India. Some of the pics were hard to figure out, almost like a puzzle and they intrigued me, like the close up of a reflection of a building through the water of a puddle.

Debra has an affinity for shoes, bikes, subway stations and barber shops that come through in her photography. She catches images at different angles, making use of shadow, reflections, and motion. Once again, her signature style is evident in this fourth photography book. If you like street photography that is real and true to life, look into Debra Schoenberger's work.

Here are my reviews of Debra Schoenberger's other photography books:

My Interview with Debra Schoenberger:

LCR: Welcome to Library of Clean Reads, Debra! Which of the 4 photography books you've published is your favorite and why?
DS: That's a tough one. It's like asking which child you like better. I think that my favorite was INDIA because there was so much raw emotion in the book. It also allowed me to be very creative with the photo layouts as well

LCR: INDIA was my favorite too! I noticed in WALK WITH ME, you group pictures together. Is there a theme to those groupings or is it just for organizational and formatting purposes?

DS: For the most part they were grouped by weight, color or balance but there are a few pages where the photos are placed together for a reason - for continuity or by theme.

LCR: What would you say your photography style would be?

DS: Real. I prefer my photos to be as true to life as possible. When I used my phone pics, I would often use an app just for fun to see how artistic I could be.

LCR: Which photographers do you admire and why?

DS: If you ever have the opportunity to review my Pinterest boards, there are about 70 photographers from different eras and parts of the world that I really admire. Each photographer has his or her unique style and I love to look through their work. A few names:

Alfred Eisenstaedt, Wayne F. Miller, Ara Güler, Elliott Erwitt, Vivian Maier, and Peter Turnley

LCR: Are you working or another photography project or book?

DS: I would love to do a book about the forest or landscapes. Or maybe even a photo book about books. It often takes years to gather enough images for a book so it may be a while.

LCR: Oh, I especially like the idea of a photography book about books! If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

DS: With my camera? I would definitely have loved to have travelled with the Group of Seven. They were a group of Canadian landscape painters in the 1920s who painted Canadian landscapes in a way that had never been done before. They were revolutionary in changing the way we appreciate art today.

LCR: Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions.

To Be A Child by Debra Schoenberger (Review & Giveaway)

A documentary of children at play from 10 different countries. Beautiful, joyous, and thought-provoking. A book that will make you smile.

To Be a Child by Debra Schoenberger
Genre: Documentary / Photography
Publisher: Blurb Publishing
Release date: November 30, 2015
eBook, 240 pages
Content Rating: G

Book Description:

Give a child a cardboard box and his imagination will turn it into anything but!

Today, it is less common to see children playing in the streets, especially in urban areas. The plethora of ready-made toys should make any child happy. What usually happens is that the box the toy came in becomes the toy!

This book documents children at play (and at times at work) from 10 different countries. A child's ingenuity never ceases to amaze me and I hope you will share these images with your children as well.

A picture paints a thousand words. How true! Photographer Debra Schoenberger has travelled to 10 different countries to capture children at play. I love the subject matter of this documentary. Just look at that book cover.  Two little girls with dirt-smudged faces and radiant joy emitting from their smiles as they share a fun moment when playing together. How precious. These types of photos really pulls at my heartstrings as a mom.

Schoenberger took four years to complete this project of mostly street photography that captures children playing with other children and using their imagination. She divides her book by themes and features several Asian countries, such as India, Mongolia and Nepal. The photos are in black and white and in color. She captures children alone, with other children interacting or exploring. The children vary in age from very young to teen years. Sometimes they are among a throng of adults and the camera focuses on them and what has got their attention.

She captures moments in time, snippets of special events or outings with parents or just a simple, but wondrous moment of discovery. Some photos tell a story and others are more of a snapshot. I would have loved to have had a little backstory to some of the pictures. Not all, but some I truly wondered about. If it was chosen out of the thousands of photos Schoenberger took, then it had meaning for her as a photographer.

If you like photography books and especially those with children or family themes, this one is sure to please. One can pour over the pictures and wonder at the moment it was taken and at the lives of these children from many parts of the world where technology does not dictate play time.

MONTREAL: Street Photography by Debra Schoenberger (Review and Giveaway)

MONTREAL: Street Photography by Debra Schoenberger
Blurb Inc
ISBN: 978-1320108317
Published Aug 24, 2014
E-book, 64 pages

This is the first time I review a photography book. Although I'm the last one with a camera in hand whenever we are touring a place, I do appreciate art. When I was younger I drew a lot and was quite good at it. I love creativity in any form.

Having said all that, this book caught my attention for several reasons. I was born and still live in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, so I wanted to see how Debra would capture my city. Debra is a world traveler who skilfully captures the essence of the places she visits. I love looking at her photos on her website, so what about Montreal?

Debra's photos are both in black and white and in color. She has many snippets of places, people and things found on the streets of Montreal. They are almost like puzzle pieces, making you pause and wonder about them. She catches images at different angles, making use of shadow and motion. There are several photos looking through street windows, on the subway (metro, as we call it), of children and of dogs.

My favorite photos are the ones that capture the joy of children playing in the street, the ethnicity of my city and the quiet snow-filled streets.

Debra's photos are unusual and quirky. They are not your typical touristy pictures, making this a unique photography book.

View more photos from her world travels on her profile page at Your Shot National Geographic.
Note: This book is rated C = clean read.

Although I worked in the field of photography for over 20 years, it wasn't until very recently in 2010 that I bought myself a secondhand professional camera and started experimenting with street photography. I shot over 50,000 images that first year and gradually began to improve.

Photographers I admire are Vivian Maier, Robert Frank, Steve McCurry and Edward Steichen to name but a few amongst the many incredibly talented people over the last century.

Street photography is my true passion. Having a slightly off-kilter sense of humour helps keep me looking for the unusual."
