My Review:
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani

I was eagerly anticipating the third book in the Anthony Provati thriller series after having read the first two books. I enjoy Giordano's writing style and the way he can so easily create flawed characters we care about. With a few bold phrases, crisp descriptions, and smart dialogue, he can seamlessly transport us into another country and easily shift the mood from one scene to the next.

In this third novel, Anthony's story continues from where it left off in the previous novel, Drone Strike. His baby daughter Angelica and his former girlfriend Nori are in Portugal. Nori needed some space after her accident and Anthony is still trying to adjust to her fall into depression and the fact that he is now a father. Typical of Anthony, he gets mixed up in unsavory business in Greece and ends up running to New York, where his Uncle Frank, a Mafia underboss, resides. But trouble always follows Anthony, and he once again gets in over his head. Fortunately, he has help from newcomer Valentina, a kickass and whip-smart female protagonist.

One of the things Giordano does best is characterization. Each character is distinct and jumps off the page. He knows how to create memorable characters, both good and bad. I could very well see this novel as a movie. Interspersed throughout the narrative are moments of humor, and for me who understands the Italian culture, I couldn't help but smile at some of the expressions. I never know what to expect when it comes to the plot because it's unpredictable with great twists, except that it will be satisfying with a very good ending and no loose plot threads. And if you are an art aficionado, this particular plot will satisfy all the more.

Fans of crime fiction, Italian mob stories, and well-written thrillers with lots of action will certainly enjoy the Anthony Provati thrillers including this one. Although this is a stand-alone novel, I suggest starting with the first book Appointment with ISIL to increase your enjoyment of the core characters who show up in all three books.

If you want to know more about the first two books in the Anthony Provati thrillers, here are my reviews: Appointment with ISIL and Drone Strike

The Birds That Stay by Ann Lambert (Review and News of Virtual Book Launch!)

I'm excited to have discovered this murder mystery by a local author set in my home province of Quebec!

Book Details:

Book Title: The Birds That Stay by Ann Lambert
Category: Adult Fiction, 344 pages
Genre: Crime Fiction, Murder Mystery
Publisher: Second Story Press
Release date: Feb 19, 2019
Content Rating: PG-13 (language, references to child abuse, sexual scenes and references)

Book Description:

In a small village in the Laurentians north of Montreal, a reclusive older woman is found strangled and frozen outside her home. Roméo Leduc, the enigmatic Chief Inspector for Homicide, is one day away from his first vacation in years, and reluctantly answers the call on the case. Roméo suspects a local biker gang is involved in what appears to be a robbery gone awry—or was the old woman a victim of a violent hate crime?

Marie Russell, a writer and divorced mother of two, lives next door to the victim. Marie becomes an inadvertent detective when her mother, suffering from dementia, offers a startling clue that links the woman’s murder to a terrible incident that happened on Marie’s suburban Montreal street in the 1970's. Together, Marie and Roméo discover that the murder goes even further back, to another crime during the darkest days in Hungary at the end of WWII. As they combine wits to find the killer, they are forced to face demons from their own pasts as they confront a cast of characters from the Quebec of yesterday and today; where no one and nothing is really as it seems.

My Review:
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani

I was excited when I discovered this murder mystery by a local author set in my home province of Quebec! Recognizing the places, the language and the culture was a bonus for me, and I read through this novel rather quickly. There was a lot in this book that resonated with me. And it's set in October so it's a perfect autumn read.

A senior is murdered in her home in the small village of Sainte-Lucie-des-Laurentides. Roméo Leduc, Chief Inspector with the Sûreté du Québec Police is on the case even though he was supposed to be leaving for a long-awaited vacation. Marie Russell, a former marine biologist, lives in Sainte Lucie. She is a college teacher on sabbatical writing children's nature books. Her mother has Alzheimer's disease and Marie is going through the painful process of moving her into a care facility. Going back to her childhood home in the west end of Montreal to help her mother brings back painful memories. As the story progresses, we get to see the connection to the murder mystery.

There's a lot going on in this book, but it's not difficult to follow. The murder mystery starts off well but then moves at a slower pace as we get a lot of backstory from Marie's past as well as some of the other characters. As far as characters are concerned my favorite was Ti-Coune. He came across as so real to me. Although he played a secondary character, I would have wished him to have been more involved somehow. Roméo came across as the typical overworked detective with a good heart.

Marie...I struggled a bit with her character. She comes across as unhappy and cynical. I found a lot of the cultural references made about Quebec were negative. There's so much about Quebec to love and I wish that would have been brought out too. For someone who had been a former marine biologist, none of Marie's work experiences leaked into the pages of this story. I was trying to figure her out, get a real sense of who she was. I felt she was incomplete and came across as a middle-aged kinda grumpy woman. She grew on me though, because of the scenes with her mother. I work in the public health sector with families and caregivers of seniors who have dementia so this resonated well with me.

Apart from this, I thought the plot was interesting and taught me a part of Canadian history I was unaware of regarding former Nazis given entrance into Canada. This was an intelligent read as various components of history are weaved into the story. The book description states that Marie and Roméo "combine wits to find the killer", but unfortunately this is not really the case. There is little interaction between them and while Marie shares a piece of information that helps to tie in to the killer, that's as far as it goes. There is no relationship development between the two which is fine, except the epilogue came out of the blue. And the series is named A Russell and Leduc Mystery, so I was expecting more introduction and development of them as a duo, not necessarily a romantic duo, but a duo nonetheless.

The Dogs of Winter is the newly released second book in this Canadian series and seems to be set more in Montreal than the outskirts of the city. I'm interested to see what Lambert has in store for us next, both as a series and regarding the sleuthing duo. For readers who enjoy Canadian literature, this one is appealing and a good autumn read.

Five Before Rome: 5 preludes to the Roma Series by Gabriel Valjan (Review and Giveaway!)

Five Before Rome is a prequel that gives the new reader an idea of Valjan's excellent writing. If you haven't read any of his works, this is a fine place to start.

Book Details:

Book Title: Five Before Rome: 5 preludes to the Roma Series by Gabriel Valjan
Category: Adult fiction, 215 pages
Genre: International Crime Thriller
Publisher: Wild Goose Publishing
Release date: June 2020
Tour dates: July 7 to July 27, 2020
Content Rating: PG-13 + M. There is violence (not graphic) and mention of child abuse by the clergy. There are 4 instances of the f-word.

Book Description:

These five novellas precede Roma, Underground, the first novel in the Roma Series. Meet the five men, who form the team around Bianca, and learn about their personal history, their respective parts of Italy, and why they each have a stake in the fight against organized crime.

My Review:
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani

Five years ago, when I first read the beginning chapters of Roma, Underground I knew I would love the book. I went on to read the rest of the four books in the series. Gabriel Valjan understands the Italian culture, history, and geography and it was such a pleasure to read how he portrayed them in his novels.

The five stories in Five Before Rome, each revolving around the five men that are part of this series, brought back to mind the characters and the stories that I liked so much. It made me want to reread the books. I enjoyed all five stories, but Gennaro's story Dance of the Spider was my favorite, showing us a vulnerable side to him. Silvio's story The Fallen One was the one that touched me the most, however, and ultimately, it was a sad one. And the last story Five Before Rome was excellent, reminding me of the series as these men worked together with camaraderie to solve a crime.

Valjan includes extensive notes at the end of the book that explains Italian expressions and words, tidbits on past events, historical figures and geographical locations, all of which serve to enhance the reading experience (and make me realize how knowledgeable this author is!)

Five Before Rome is a prequel that gives the new reader an idea of Valjan's excellent writing. For those who have read one or all books in the Roma series, this will make you want to read more of Valjan's work. Highly recommended for fans of Italian mafia stories, international crime fiction and thrillers.

My Review:
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani

After having read several books from the three series of Carr's books on the market, I was excited to read ICE, the first book in the Chris Matheson Cold Case Mystery series with a whole new set of characters. As is Carr's trademark, ICE was a thrilling crime fiction novel filled with twists and turns, non-stop action, strong characters, and comical relief in the form of four-legged companions.

Chris Matheson, a retired FBI agent in his forties and the new main character of the series, is a widower with three daughters aged 6, 10 and 13. He moves back in to live with his mother Doris on the family farm. Moving back to town brings back bad memories of when Chris was accused of killing pregnant Sally Lipton 24 years ago. Although he was acquitted, the town is still suspicious of him.

When a dead body shows up on his property, cold cases are dredged up, old flames are reignited and Chris is back in the game. He reluctantly joins a book club which turns out to be the secretive Geezer Squad, a team of fellow retired law enforcement officers, each with special investigative skills, who get together to solve unresolved cases. This is where Carr's skill at creating new and interesting characters comes into play. I just simply loved the Geezer Squad! The four men and two females were unique, razor smart, and used their mature status and life experience to keep active.

But I have to say that my favorite characters were Doris and Sterling. Doris isn't your average grandmother. She is a stylish mature woman, with wonderful mothering instincts and a sharp tongue that can bring grown men to their knees. She was awesome! And Sterling, the goofy German Shepherd, who was injured on duty as a law enforcement canine, just stole my heart and cracked me up with his antics. That casino scene was just priceless.

The only character that I felt was underdeveloped was Helen Clarke, Chris love interest. For some reason, I wasn't too fond of her, and she irked me. I think if her background had been explored a little more, I would have understood her better and connected with her more. Apart from this, Carr captures the essence of family beautifully with heartwarming scenes with Chris and his daughters. Furthermore, she used the external element of an ice storm to build conflict, suspense and the metaphorical feeling of cold cases.

ICE is a strong start to a new series that will have fans of Lauren Carr thrilled to be introduced to another set of memorable and entertaining characters. Carr's Geezer Squad has brought sexy back to mature men and women, whose kickass attitude and smarts sizzle as they melt the clues to those cold cases!

The Company Files: The Good Man by Gabriel Valjan (Review & Giveaway!)

The Company Files is a new series by Gabriel Valjan, one of my favorite authors, with the first book The Good Man recently published and featured here today! If you like noir fiction, espionage historical fiction, then look no further.

Book Details:

Book Title: The Company Files: 1. The Good Man by Gabriel Valjan
Category: Adult Fiction, 251 pages
Genre: Thriller, Historical Fiction, Crime Fiction, Espionage
Publisher: Winter Goose Publishing
Release date: December 2017
Tour dates: Feb 12 to March 2, 2018
Content Rating: PG + M (No bad language but there is a rape scene with a minor and then another attempted rape scene, and some violence.)

Book Description:

In 1948, Vienna was divided among four powers: France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Jack Marshall had served with Walker during the war, and now, working together for The Company, they are tasked to do the inconceivable. Could former Nazis really be recruited to assist the U.S. in the atomic race? As their team moves forward, they quickly discover they are not the only ones looking for these men. And the others in the search may just have the objective of murder.

In this tale of historical noir, of corruption and deceit, no one is who they say they are. Who is The Good Man in a world where an enemy may be a friend, an ally may be the enemy, and governments deny everything?

My Review:
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani

Two years ago, I discovered the Roma series by Gabriel Valjan, and was hooked from the first book and read all five in the series. I eagerly await the 6th novel. However, in the meantime, The Company Files is a new series by Gabriel Valjan, with the first book The Good Man recently published and featured here today. In an interview with me on Oct 3, 2016, the author said about this series:
The Company Files is a multi-book series about the early days of the intelligence community. This series draws from real history and individuals. The writing style is very different from that of the Roma Series. I would describe it as le Carré meets Chandler.
Oh, there is something about noir fiction that is so compelling, drawing us in with its cynical characters and fatalistic mood punctured with witty repartee. The Good Man set in 1948 Vienna has that but with a good ending. We have Jack Marshall and Walker, former soldiers who are now working for The Company, in search of former Nazis to recruit them to work for the U.S. government. Leslie is the Company analyst, mysterious and alluring. And then we have Sheldon, who comes across as calm and collected but is a Jew who survived the horrors of Auschwitz. Valjan peels back the many layers of each character slowly, as the plot thickens and unlikely alliances form between former enemies as the winds of change sweep through post-war Europe.

The story has classic elements of noir fiction with hardboiled main characters, a post-war setting, espionage and crime with an unexpected femme fatale that surprised me. I'm also happy to say that unlike the norm in this genre, there is no profanity or excessive violence in this novel. It's true that the writing style is different from Valjan's previous books, but then again, this is a different genre. It is a testament to Valjan's writing talent that he can switch from his thriller series laced with humour and camaraderie to a darker thematic novel.

While the hardened male characters bedecked in dark suits and fedoras could quicken a woman's heartbeat when that vulnerable side slipped through their tough veneer, I was more ambivalent about the female characters. Tania, the Russian refugee is still an enigma to me and several things about her remained unanswered for me, (perhaps this was the intention all along) making me think she will make another appearance in future books?

If you like noir fiction, espionage historical fiction that is atmospheric and leaves one pondering moral dilemmas then this one's for you. An absorbing read to be sure, one that immerses the reader into a world filled with political intrigue, shady characters, and the need to find one's place in a world struggling to regain its footing in the aftermath of WWII.

My Review:

Necessities is the fourth book in the Donnie Ray Cuinn series, and I sure hope the author is writing another instalment. I liked all four books in this series and thought this one was quite brilliant.  It's a stand-alone novel and can be read without having read the first three books, but as with the previous books I liked that I had background knowledge of Donnie and his family.

Necessities was different from the first three books because Donnie Ray Cuinn only makes an appearance about half-way through the book. At first I wasn't sure if I liked this (Donnie is, after all, the main character--and my favorite--in the series) but once I finished the book, I understood why the author wrote the story the way he did. The first half is told in the first person POV of David Lewis, a character we briefly meet in The Monkey House. He is a war hero, a veteran who lost both his legs in Iraq. He is a journalist who is married to a gorgeous heiress. We get close and personal with him. Even if we don't think we do.

When David Lewis finds himself on trial for murder he wants small-town lawyer Donnie to represent him and not some big-shot lawyer he can very well afford. In the second part of the book, the POV shifts to third person. This tactic is brilliant and you only realize this as a reader once you finish reading the book. As Donnie creates his case defending Lewis, we begin to unravel just how much we know and do not know of Lewis and his family. The suspense builds beautifully especially with the courtroom scenes. As is his trademark, the author includes twists and turns that leave the reader reeling because just when you thought you had it figured out, well, you don't.

I thought about this book for a long time after I finished reading it, about how brilliant it really was because the author had me all along right from the very beginning. I was waiting for Donnie to show up and when he does, his case is built on the story of David Lewis as told from Lewis' perspective. I won't say more, except that I can't wait to read more about Donnie and his life adventures. He still hasn't gotten over his wife's death even if several women have tried to establish a long-term relationship with him.

Regarding content, there are f-words and religious profanity but fewer than his first three books. The sex scenes are not explicit.

With a brilliant plot, sly characters, and witty dialogue, this intelligent suspense crime fiction will take you for a good ride. An excellent read that is over too quickly leaving you shaking your head and wanting more.

BOYD TAYLOR lives in Austin, Texas with his wife and their Havanese dog Toby. Necessities is the fourth novel in the Donnie Ray Cuinn series. In a former life, Boyd was a lawyer and a corporate officer. A native of Temple, Texas, he graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a B.A. in government and an LL.B. from the law school.

Boyd's first novel "Hero" was prescient in its story about fake news. His second novel, "The Antelope Play," dealt with drug trafficking in the Texas Panhandle, an unfortunately accurate forecast. The third, "The Monkey House", involved commercial development of a large green space in the center of Austin, all too familiar to Austin residents. Whether his upcoming novel "Necessities" predicts future events with the accuracy of the earlier books remains to be seen.

The Monkey House is the third book in the Donnie Ray Cuinn series. I liked it just as much as the first two books and have now become familiar with the cast of characters. Check out my review and enter the giveaway to win a copy of Necessities, the fourth book in the series.

Content Rating: PG-13 + M (Some adult language and elusion to sex.)

Book Description:

This, the third Donnie Ray Cuinn book, pits Donnie against the old friends and new enemies guilty of land fraud and corporate greed. Donnie returns to Austin from his law practice in the Texas Panhandle to confront All-American football player Wesley Bird, his former best friend. In the company of beautiful, athletic Anna Kaye Nordstrom, Donnie experiences the "new" Austin of glitzy condos, trendy restaurants and social media. He also revisits the "old" Austin of barbecue, power politics and greens versus developers. Donnie finds that not much has changed.

My Review:

The Monkey House is the third book in the Donnie Ray Cuinn series. I liked it just as much as the first two books and have now become familiar with the cast of characters. It's a stand-alone novel and can be read without having read the first two books, but I liked that I had background knowledge of Donnie and his family, especially since this instalment takes place mostly back in Austin where it all started and includes characters prevalent in the first book Hero.

Time has passed since the end of the last book, and Donnie Ray Cuinn has now bought the law practice from his former law partner. He is no longer the inexperienced lawyer, but is still struggling with the death of his wife years ago and continues to blame himself, not permitting himself to move forward in a permanent relationship.

His former best friend Wesley starts a project in real estate and Donnie's family is involved, forcing Donnie to face his old enemy. The law issues are therefore more personal and we see Donnie as a grown man trying to take care of his family. Donnie is such a likable character. He is less cynical in this story and has accumulated "street smarts" in his law practice. Again, as is this author's trademark, the story takes unexpected twists and turns, has a good dose of humor and leads us to a satisfying ending. Regarding content, there are f-words and religious profanity, that I've become good at skipping over these because I'm enjoying this series too much.

We are introduced to Dave Lewis who is one of the main characters in Necessities, the fourth book in this series that I will begin reading shortly. I feel like this book would make a great TV series, and I am eager to start the next book and get back into the world of Donnie Ray Cuinn with its setting in Texas, a cast of memorable characters and intelligent plots that keep me turning the pages.

If you like to read books in a series, this one is worth starting. If you especially like crime fiction with good humor and great courtroom drama, then this one is definitely a good choice. And the book covers and titles. Spot on!
