Release date: July 22, 2019

“I’m working on the greatest mystery ever,” was the last thing noted mystery novelist Mercedes Livingston said to seven-year-old Chris Matheson before walking out of Hill House Hotel never to be seen again.
For decades, the writer’s fate remained a puzzling mystery until an autographed novel and a letter put a grown-up Chris Matheson on the trail of a cunning killer. With the help of a team of fellow retired law enforcement officers, each a specialist in their own field of investigation, Chris puts a flame to this cold case to uncover what had really happened that night Mercedes Livingston walked out of Hill House Hotel. Watch out! The clues are getting hot!

My Review:
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani
The Last Thing She Said (catchy title!) is the third book in the Chris Matheson Cold Case Mystery series that I love. It seems that each book is better than the last. In this installment, we even have appearances from beloved characters of the other three series, including Mac Faraday with Archie Monday and the famous Gnarly, now mayor of Spencer. The scenes with him were just hilarious.
What made this book kinda special is that it's the cold case of a best-selling author who disappeared forty years ago. Chris was just seven years old when it happened and he was at the conference where that author was seen for the last time. What a clever plot this storyline had! Honestly, Lauren Carr has such a creative mind, an imagination that makes every book unique, and yet has her familiar writing style with twists and turns peppered with humor and animal characters as strong as her human ones. I loved the addition of Chompers. And that last scene with Traveler, Chris' horse, was quite touching.
The Geezer Squad is at it again, putting their years of experience to good use. And Chris takes his relationship with Helen to a new level. I'm still warming up to her. She's a bit too sarcastic for my taste and she doesn't stand out like Carr's other female love interests. I can easily name the traits of all the other main female characters that make them stand out but with Helen, I'm still not sure. I guess it would be that she's a great mom.
So this one is another winner, not just in this series but as the latest in Carr's literary work. I can't wait to read her next novel and revisit characters that seem so real to me I feel like they're my friends. Recommended to all mystery and animal lovers.
