Book Title: Tiffany Blues by M.J. Rose
Category: Adult Fiction, 336 pages
Genre: Historical Fiction
Publisher: Atria Books
Release date: Aug 7, 2018
Tour dates: Aug 6 to Sept 7, 2018
Content Rating: PG-13 + M (deals with spousal abuse, drug use and there are a few sex scenes, not too explicit)

Book Description:

New York, 1924. Twenty‑four‑year‑old Jenny Bell is one of a dozen burgeoning artists invited to Louis Comfort Tiffany’s prestigious artists’ colony. Gifted and determined, Jenny vows to avoid distractions and romantic entanglements and take full advantage of the many wonders to be found at Laurelton Hall.

But Jenny’s past has followed her to Long Island. Images of her beloved mother, her hard-hearted stepfather, waterfalls, and murder, and the dank hallways of Canada’s notorious Andrew Mercer Reformatory for Women overwhelm Jenny’s thoughts, even as she is inextricably drawn to Oliver, Tiffany’s charismatic grandson.

As the summer shimmers on, and the competition between the artists grows fierce as they vie for a spot at Tiffany’s New York gallery, a series of suspicious and disturbing occurrences suggest someone knows enough about Jenny’s childhood trauma to expose her.

Supported by her closest friend Minx Deering, a seemingly carefree socialite yet dedicated sculptor, and Oliver, Jenny pushes her demons aside. Between stolen kisses and stolen jewels, the champagne flows and the jazz plays on until one moonless night when Jenny’s past and present are thrown together in a desperate moment, that will threaten her promising future, her love, her friendships, and her very life.

My Review:
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani

I've heard wonderful things about M.J. Rose's books and although her other books did not appeal to me this one did. The setting and the topic of art drew me in immediately. As did that stunning cover. This historical fiction contains mystery, art, historical facts and romance, the perfect blend for a great read. The author weaves a fine story about a young woman who needs to heal from her past.

Jenny Bell grew up in Hamilton Canada. She had a wonderful relationship with her mother who taught her to love painting. Their happy life changes when her mother marries a man who turns out to be abusive and a violent act changes everything for them. Jenny's past is revealed in layers and in flashbacks. She is now a grown, independent woman making her way in the art world, but she is still broken inside. When she and best friend Minx are accepted to Louis Comfort Tiffany’s prestigious retreat for artists, Jenny find a mentor who becomes a pivotal force in her life.

In the lush, gorgeous setting of Laurelton Hall, Jenny falls in love with Oliver, but someone knows about Jenny's past and wants to use this against her. The ending was bittersweet for me, but ultimately satisfying. I liked Jenny as a character. She was loyal, self-sacrificing, resilient and fiercely independent. The author brought to life the stunning gardens and grounds of Laurelton Hall as well as Tiffany's glass artistry. It was obvious the author researched this topic well and her love of art shines in this novel.

If you love 20th-century historical fiction, the art world, the jazz era and a well-written story with beautiful descriptions and strong female characters, then you will enjoy Tiffany Blues.

Death Never Sleeps by E.J. Simon (Review & Giveaway!)

I've been wanting to read this book ever since the first edition was published several years ago. I finally got a chance to read it and it was as good as I thought it would be. Check out my review of the first book in the series and enter the giveaway for some great prizes!

Book Details:

Book Title: Death Never Sleeps by E.J. Simon
Series: Michael Nicholas Book 1
Category: Adult Fiction, 291 pages
Genre: Thriller & Suspense., Technothriller
Publisher: Endeavour Media (UK)
Release date: July 2017
Tour dates: Aug 13 to Oct 12, 2018
Content Rating: PG-13 + M (contains f-words, religious profanities and crude language)

Book Description:

Where does life end, and death begin?

Brothers, Alex and Michael, weren’t particularly close in terms of their careers in their later years. But when Alex is murdered, Michael finds it necessary to keep Alex’s business running, at least for the foreseeable future.

With very little knowledge about what Alex actually did for a living, little does he envisage the level of complication this entails. Working closely with his cousins, Fat and Skinny Lester, Michael starts to get a sense of what needs doing … in whatever way Alex would have dealt with things.

But, when Alex’s current wife, and his two ex-wives, surface and start to dish out demands, Michael finds himself going deeper and deeper into Alex’s personal space. All his ex-wives knew there was money left hidden … but only Alex knew of its exact location.

When Russell, an old friend of Michael’s, and Alex’s most trusted person, offers to help Michael find the money, Michael feels he can start closing up on Alex’s loose ends and move on with his own, increasingly complicated life.

Until … Russell is brutally murdered …

Someone else is after Alex’s money … and it’s not a friendly person.

But is Alex really dead? Or is he as dead as he has prepared himself to be?

Michael is beyond confused … is he imaging the conversations he’s having with Alex? But Alex was shot dead in his own restaurant, one filled with policemen. Surely, Alex is dead?

Whichever way Michael tries to rationalize things in his head, Alex’s support is beyond what he needs. Finding himself face to face with a crook, Sharkey, one who has no qualms about killing people, one Alex was in debt to, Michael takes on Alex’s advice … dead or not!

As the number of deaths rise, Michael and his wife, Samantha, are left on their toes. Would they ever feel safe again? Is anyone safe? And how far did Alex go with his new venture?

My Review:
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani

I've been wanting to read this book ever since the first edition was published several years ago. I finally got a chance to read it and it was as good as I thought it would be. Death Never Sleeps is a fast-paced thriller that explored the concept of artificial intelligence (AI) that adds a wonderful element of both surprise and suspense to the storyline.

Michael works in the top corporate world, is well off and happily married. He has kept a distance from his older brother Alex mainly because Alex is involved in shady business. But when Alex is murdered, Michael has no choice but to get involved and discovers he likes the thrill and danger that comes with Alex's business, especially when he is given a way to keep communicating with his dead brother.

The whole AI concept is fascinating. E.J. Simon seamlessly blends this technological element to create a thrilling plot with a main character who finds himself at a turning point in his life. Michael is a likable, relatable character who gets caught up in a situation that changes his life. As different as he is from his brother, there are strong brotherly and family ties that pull at Michael.

Despite the fast-paced story, there are moments of self-reflection and introspection as Michael is thrust in a difficult situation. This pace is also wonderfully punctuated with mouthwatering scenes at various restaurants, making me hungry throughout the reading of this novel. The only thing that marred my reading pleasure was the amount of f-bombs and religious profanity throughout the novel. Way too much.

So, I will steel myself as I prepare to read the second novel because I'm hooked. The stakes are raised as Michael discovers how deadly his brother's enemies are and how far involved he has become with the criminal world. More importantly, he has developed a virtual relationship with his brother like never before. There's no turning back now. Look for my review of Death Logs In on Sept 19!

My Review:
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani

Sunayna is a young author who loves to write. She has self-published two novels and has learned a few valuable lessons from her experience.

The Life and Lessons of a Young Author is a very short non-fiction book: 19 pages to be exact. It can be read in under an hour and is an honest account of the author's writing and publishing experience. It is a rather personal account with good advice for a newbie young author, such as to 1) have beta readers give your work honest feedback and learn from their constructive criticism, 2) make sure your work is professionally edited before publication, and 3) create a fanbase before publication.

None of this advice is new. It can be found easily online and is basic advice, but for a newbie young author, it may be new and definitely worth heeding. It is commendable for Sunayna to want to share her candid writing experience with other aspiring young writers, however, she needs to apply her own advice and reach a measure of publishing success before setting out to teach others about writing and publication.

Book Description:

The Austin Paradox continues the remarkable saga of Robert James Austin in a gripping emotionally-charged thriller that explores the most compelling issues of our time.

The Austin Paradox is the sequel to the critically acclaimed, award-winning novel, Miracle Man, which was named by Amazon as One of the Top 100 Novels of 2015, a Top 10 Best Selling Thriller and a Top 10 New York Times/Amazon Best Seller.

My Review:
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani

Last week I reviewed Miracle Man, the first book in the Miracle Man series that left me fascinated with its main character Robert James Austin (Bobby). This sequel continues the story from where the first book left off, where Bobby survived a lab explosion and lost his unsurpassed genius intelligence.

Once again, the author builds a complex but believable plot, in which a Mideastern terrorist unleashes a biological weapon intent on destroying his enemies. We revisit past characters and new ones are introduced. Once again, greed, power and government manipulation are at the forefront as Bobby struggles with his personal demons and ethical issues. Bobby continues to be a fascinating character in this novel, although a good portion of the novel focuses on the enemy characters. The effects of the deadly disease and its experimentation on innocent people was hard to read and a feeling of dread permeated much of the novel for me.

However, as in the first book, the ending is really good and the paradox created even better, leaving the reader with much to ponder about. Leibowitz is a master storyteller and I can see this saga continuing in yet another book (hopefully!). Although this is a stand alone novel, I strongly suggest reading the first book. Read alone, this book is a good thriller, but read as a sequel, it's the continuation of a great saga thriller.

My Review:
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani

Miracle Man is one of those novels you keep thinking about long after you read the last page. From the moment I met the character Robert James Austin (Bobby), I was intrigued, enthralled and enamored with him. Author William R. Leibowitz begins the saga of a fictional man who would become the greatest genius in human history. From his childhood, adolescence and finally adulthood, we are immersed into Bobby's world. And what a fascinating world it is!

Bobby is determined to use his intellectual superiority to help the world through disease cures. This causes him to have enemies, especially in the pharmaceutical industry. It also conflicts with the government who had given him the opportunity to attend a special educational institution for geniuses and now wants to use him for military and defense advancement. Bobby has to decide how he is going to live his life, a life so far different from everyone else.

This book was captivating and engrossing. There is excellent character development, especially with Bobby and those close to him. We get to see him grow up and develop into a man who becomes a controversy while being revered. We cheer his successes and cry with him when he loses loved ones. Bobby's genius is both a gift and a curse, causing him to have horrific nightmares. Throughout the novel, the reader wonders why this happens, and the author creates a plot surrounding this phenomenon that brings the story to a climactic and surprising ending.

For those concerned with content, there are scenes of drug and alcohol abuse, and mention of men with depraved sexual lifestyles. These are not explicit, however.

I enjoyed reading Miracle Man and look forward to reading the sequel The Austin Paradox. Leibowitz is a great storyteller and I am now a fan.

I could not resist a book set in Rome. And I couldn't remember the last time I read a romantic comedy. The Love Fool was both, and I must say, a fun book to read. It made me nostalgic for the Eternal City and it had me laughing so hard at one point, endearing me to the book even more.

Basically, this is the story of a single guy, Alex Corso, who takes up a job in Rome as a publicist with the PR firm Zero Otto Marketing. His first client is a gorgeous and classy Danish chef who has her own cooking show and who is trying to break into the Italian market. While juggling his new job, Alex's ex-girlfriend Emily contacts him and wants to see him after a long absence of years. The book contains a dual timeline between the present in Rome to Alex's college days in 1990's Boston as we get to know about his relationship with Emily.

Right from the start, I could tell seeing Emily again was going to set things off, but the story is all about Alex working through his feelings and issues with Emily both past and present. There were times when I just wanted to smack him and tell him to wake up but nothing is easy when the heart is involved, I know. I enjoyed this book with its humor, the way the author brought out Italy's modern culture, and riding along Alex's journey as he bumbles along and discovers how to move on in the right direction.

If you enjoy romantic comedy set in Italy, then this book is a fun book to read. It would make a great movie and is an entertaining way to escape the humdrum of everyday life. The book cover is attention-grabbing and makes sense once you've read the book. Oh, I'm going to want to giggle every time I see salmon from now on. A great debut from Lorenzo Petruzziello!
