Book Description:

Katya leads a normal life any teenager would be envious of – popular, pretty and dating the high school elite. Not she enjoys the spotlight, mind you. She wants everyone to believe she is normal.

But when Katya sees the real reason behind the earthquakes plaguing everyone in Boston, the truth rattles and shatters the perfect normal illusion Katya created for herself. An ability to see unearthly creatures and manipulate waves of life energy labels her as anything but normal. And it’s an ability that attracts unwanted and dangerous attention.

She reluctantly finds herself in the company of Gregor, a handsome member of an international spirit military team called the Kyrios. Her simple decision to help thrusts Katya in a world of the undead spirits, betrayal and a perpetual battle between undead monsters and the wardens that keep them in their place.

Katya must decide whether she values the simple and easy life she created for herself over the complex and difficult world now asking her to stand and fight.

The one thing that you can count on in fantasy books is that you will enter into a whole different world with every book. In AWOKE, Katya discovers that her visions and powerful energy within her not only make her different (when all she wants to be is a normal teenager) but they thrust her into a new and important role that she is totally unprepared for.

Katya discovers a spiritual realm through Gregor who is part of Kyrios, a powerful spirit military team that take it upon themselves to fight monsters who are invisibly causing havoc to the world that sees the destruction through earthquakes, tsunamis, windstorms and the like. Katya is the key to stopping the world from falling into ruin and death, although she only slowly comes to realize this as she becomes more involved with Gregor.

The story was engaging and it held my interest throughout as I was transported along with Katya into this new world. Katya was a great character. She was beautiful but did not flaunt it, she was unapologetically sassy, yet kind and loyal. She was strong-willed, yet vulnerable. I LOVED that she was eighteen and still a virgin even though she was dating. And it was refreshing to have a black lead character. Gregor was swoon-worthy and gorgeous. And mysterious. And charming. Caring and devoted. A fighter. And very torn between his mission and his growing feelings for Katya.

The world-building was good, although it made metaphorical references to the spirit realm of God, angels, demons and the afterlife. As a Christian, I avoid books that portray God's realm other than Biblical, but this was very much a fantasy and did not have any religious undertones. I did think that the internal battle a human being has with sinful tendencies was explored through the world-building and it would not surprise me if it was part of the plot theme in the upcoming series.

The plot built up nicely to a solid ending, not a cliffhanger, and it opened up the door to the sequel since this is the first book in the Want series. I love the cover of this book and it was perfect for this story. Fans of fantasy novels and paranormal romance will gobble this one up.
