Candidate for Murder: A Mac Faraday Mystery by Lauren Carr (Review and Giveaway!)

I think this one is Lauren Carr's best murder mystery so far from what I've read of her work. I mean who else can write about a dog running for mayor and still give us a thrilling murder mystery?

Book Details:

Book Title:  Candidate for Murder: A Mac Faraday Mystery by Lauren Carr
Category:  Adult fiction, 424 pages
Genre:  Mystery
Publisher:  Acorn Book Services
Release date:  June 2016
Content Rating:  PG-13 (This is murder mystery. There are no sex scenes, but some, very little, foul language. No f-bombs.)

Book Description:

It’s election time in Spencer, Maryland, and the race for mayor is not a pretty one. In recent years, the small resort town has become divided between the local year-round residents who have enjoyed their rural way of life and the city dwellers moving into their mansions, taking over the town council, and proceeding to turn Deep Creek Lake into a closed gate community—complete with a host of regulations for everything from speed limits to clothes lines.

When the political parties force-feed two unsavory mayoral nominees on the town residents, Police Chief David O’Callaghan decides to make a statement—by nominating Gnarly, Mac Faraday’s German shepherd, to run as mayor of Spencer!

What starts out as a joke turns into a disaster when overnight Gnarly becomes the front runner—at which point his political enemies take a page straight out of Politics 101. What do you do when you’re behind in a race? Dig up dirt on the front runner, of course.

Seemingly, someone is not content to rest with simply embarrassing the front runner by publicizing his dishonorable discharge from the United States Army, but to throw in a murder for good measure. With murder on the ballot, Mac Faraday and the gang—including old friends from past cases—dive in to clear Gnarly’s name, catch a killer, and save Spencer!

My Review:
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani

This is the third book I read by Lauren Carr and I must say once you start, the characters grow on you and you just want to keep reading her series. Candidate for Murder is the 12th book in the Mac Faraday Mysteries. All Lauren Carr's books are stand-alone novels and she includes a character list at the front of the book. But once you've read one or two of her books, you get to know all of her characters and it's easy to keep track of who is who. I've read Three Days to Forever and Cancelled Vows from this series and Kill and Run, which is the first book in her new Thorny Rose Mysteries.

Candidate for Murder was so entertaining, I kept reading parts of it to my hubby as I read through it. It was just too funny not to share. When the elections for a mayor in Spencer, Maryland offers two very unsavory characters who are nothing but trouble, the chief of policy decides to show his frustration by nominating Gnarly, Mac Faraday's German Shepherd as a candidate. Carr succeeds in showing the ugly side of elections by including all the usual tactics candidates use to discredit one another.

She does this all while creating a murder mystery tied in with several story threads that are all solved and tied up neatly at the end. All this is done while the backstory of why Gnarly, who served in the United States Army was dishonorably discharged four years ago. He has a classified file and the army refuses to talk about him. Gnarly, who is one of my favorite characters in the series really takes center stage in this novel. We get to see his army training in full force.

Now that I have read books from two of Lauren Carr's series, I can appreciate when she includes some of the characters from her other series in her books. Truly these characters grow on you. Even though the book is fast paced and you're wondering who the bad guy really is because there are many of them, Carr makes sure to include snippets of romance, funny moments and plenty of dog antics that animal lovers will rejoice to read.

I think this one is Lauren Carr's best murder mystery so far from what I've read of her work. I mean who else can write about a dog running for mayor and still give us a thrilling murder mystery? Plenty of laughter, twists and turns and murders in this one. Perfect for the mystery lover who enjoys colorful characters, smart dogs, political and gov't corruption and a good dose of humor in their books. This one made it to my list of Best Reads for 2016.
