Three Days to Forever is a fast-paced, non-stop action-packed thriller with lovable characters, interspersed moments of humor and some jaunty romance. Phew! What a ride.
This is the first time I read a novel by international best-selling author Lauren Carr. And although this is the 9th book in the Mac Faraday Mystery series, it can be read as a stand-alone. Carr made sure to include the cast of characters and their connection to one another at the start of the book. Smart move because it truly helped me to remember who was who.
I can now understand the appeal for her fans who follow the characters and their adventures in book after book. They are a fun bunch and each have their distinct personalities. The men are almost all involved in some way with the police force or the military.
The plot is complex and full of sub-plots and twists and turns and all interconnected, making me admire Carr for keeping it all straight! The story takes place in the span of three days as retired homicide detective and millionaire Mac Faraday prepares for his wedding (hence the title) and is suddenly fighting terrorists and a murder accusation, all while planning a daring rescue.
Although there are plenty of shootings, bombs and dead bodies, there is also a good dose of humor that makes this more of a fun read than a serious one. Families are close, danger is intense and the new-found romance between Jessica and Murphy was amusing and endearing. Their instant love for one another and saucy dialogue cracked me up. Jessica's wardrobe was priceless and I loved her bubbly personality.
I have to mention that Carr includes pet characters which are so well-developed or portrayed (she definitely understand animal behavior) that they sometimes steal the show. They are even listed in the cast of characters. If you are an animal lover, you will love these scenes. Truly, a dog is a man's best friend.
Next up is Kill and Run, which is the first installment of the Thorny Rose Mysteries and includes Jessica and Murphy once again. I look forward to seeing how the lovebirds handle married life and Murphy's top secret missions. Should make for another fun read!
Note: This book is rated PG-13 for violence (not gory) and some sexual scenes (no sex).
