My Review:
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani

Last week I reviewed Miracle Man, the first book in the Miracle Man series that left me fascinated with its main character Robert James Austin (Bobby). This sequel continues the story from where the first book left off, where Bobby survived a lab explosion and lost his unsurpassed genius intelligence.

Once again, the author builds a complex but believable plot, in which a Mideastern terrorist unleashes a biological weapon intent on destroying his enemies. We revisit past characters and new ones are introduced. Once again, greed, power and government manipulation are at the forefront as Bobby struggles with his personal demons and ethical issues. Bobby continues to be a fascinating character in this novel, although a good portion of the novel focuses on the enemy characters. The effects of the deadly disease and its experimentation on innocent people was hard to read and a feeling of dread permeated much of the novel for me.

However, as in the first book, the ending is really good and the paradox created even better, leaving the reader with much to ponder about. Leibowitz is a master storyteller and I can see this saga continuing in yet another book (hopefully!). Although this is a stand alone novel, I strongly suggest reading the first book. Read alone, this book is a good thriller, but read as a sequel, it's the continuation of a great saga thriller.

Miracle Man is one of those novels you keep thinking about long after you read the last page. From the moment I met the character Robert James Austin (Bobby), I was intrigued, enthralled and enamored with him. Author William R. Leibowitz begins the saga of a fictional man who would become the greatest genius in human history. From his childhood, adolescence and finally adulthood, we are immersed into Bobby's world. And what a fascinating world it is!

Bobby is determined to use his intellectual superiority to help the world through disease cures. This causes him to have enemies, especially in the pharmaceutical industry. It also conflicts with the government who had given him the opportunity to attend a special educational institution for geniuses and now wants to use him for military and defense advancement. Bobby has to decide how he is going to live his life, a life so far different from everyone else.

This book was captivating and engrossing. There is excellent character development, especially with Bobby and those close to him. We get to see him grow up and develop into a man who becomes a controversy while being revered. We cheer his successes and cry with him when he loses loved ones. Bobby's genius is both a gift and a curse, causing him to have horrific nightmares. Throughout the novel, the reader wonders why this happens, and the author creates a plot surrounding this phenomenon that brings the story to a climactic and surprising ending.

For those concerned with content, there are scenes of drug and alcohol abuse, and mention of men with depraved sexual lifestyles. These are not explicit, however.

I enjoyed reading Miracle Man and look forward to reading the sequel The Austin Paradox. Leibowitz is a great storyteller and I am now a fan.
