Did you know that attachment style impacts more than romantic relationships? As it turns out, most of us are thinking about Attachment Theory all wrong, and triple board-certified clinical and forensic neuropsychologist Dr. Judy Ho is here to set the record straight.

Grounded in the science of attachment, Dr. Judy’s game-changing approach shows that our attachment style impacts every aspect of our lives: friendships, career, goal setting, and, critically, our sense of self. My Review:
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani

As a Special Care Counsellor, I have always been drawn to learning more about neuropsychology and anything to do with behaviours. When my children were young, I practiced attachment parenting, carrying my babies in a sling, co-sleeping, and doing long-term breastfeeding. But with baby #2 came post-partum depression, and I struggled with everything, feeling like a failure most of the time. It took me years to get back on track. Now my kids are adults, and I'm successful in my career, but when Dr. Judy Ho's new book came out, I knew I wanted to read it, fascinated, as I am, with this topic.

I was somewhat familiar with the attachment styles in a very general way but I wanted a more in-depth look at them. As I began reading and then filling out the questionnaire, I began to see clearly my attachment style and how it explained a lot of my behaviours! It was truly eye-opening...and surprising. Suddenly, my brain was flooded with childhood memories and I began to better understand myself.

The book is divided into chapters that explain the four different attachment styles and how to heal from those that prevent you from being securely attached and thriving in all aspects of your life. I particularly liked chapter 2 on self-concept, and the appendixes that offered self-compassion strategies and tips on how to deal with triggers. As I dived deeper into the information about my style, I realized two things. First is that throughout the years I have worked at making the changes Dr. Ho talks about. No easy feat, but I am in a much better place. Second is that there is still more I can do to make sure I use the right coping strategies, hence the usefulness of this book. The exercises included are insightful but not easy to do at times because they require much self-reflection. However, that is the only way to change for the better. Even if you start with only a few things, this book can really empower you to make the changes that will help you reach your full potential.

The New Rules of Attachment is an excellent resource for everyone, yes everyone, because we all have attachment issues that we can eliminate or improve. It's for individuals who want to understand themselves or others better. It's for the parent who wants to raise securely attached children. I also recommend it for professionals who work in social sciences, psychology, and in the health and wellness fields. Thank you Dr. Ho for your insights and guidance in this book that leads to self-exploration and self-transformation.

I Can Handle It! is the perfect book to help young ones especially in this time of pandemic. And its message is helpful for both young and old!

Sebastian is a young boy who goes through various emotions, for example, being sad when his best friend is mad at him or frustrated when adults don't listen. He then goes through various scenarios about how he will handle them. Some are funny or silly and others are simple but powerful solutions on dealing with these emotions or situations. I love that the author names specific emotions, such as annoyed, ashamed, miserable and cranky. This helps children recognize and voice how they are feeling in an intellectual way rather than just feel the emotion in a physical way. When a child learns how to be specific about what he/she is feeling, such as "I am feeling lonely" or "I am feeling scared", then these specific emotions can be addressed as well as their underlying cause.

I was truly impressed by this book. With a few sentences, it demonstrates to a child that when problems arise there are ways of coping and dealing with them and it's up to us to choose how to handle them. "I can handle it": four small words that can help us believe in ourselves. I'm a big fan of positive psychology. The earlier in life we learn how to positive self-talk the better it is for our mental health.

I Can Handle It! is an excellent resource book and would make a good addition to any home or school library. Highly recommended.

Affirm Your Life, Stay Healthy, Color and Write: Books to help you set good goals for the coming year

There are a few books that I wanted to share with you that I think can help you to get off to a good start in this new year. Books that can motivate you to set goals in achieving personal growth, better health or quality time for yourself.

A journal for purpose and personal effectiveness

My Review:
Affirm Your Life is a guided journal that uses the wisdom of Dr. Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People to motivate and empower its users to find purpose or to re-center their life's goals, relationships, priorities, etc. The author writes in the first person and you feel like she's right these inspiring you to affirm your life. It's a fun workbook filled with quotes, journal pages, experiences, exercises and activities. It's small enough to fit in your purse, lightweight and easy to carry. My only complaint is that the font is small.

If you're looking to make time for personal growth in your life and to set new goals for the year ahead, this would be a great start.

An educational primer on mental health and healthy aging

My Review:
Dr. Murali Rao has written an easy-to-understand resource on healthy aging, mental health and mental illnesses. In his own words, he describes his book as "an educational primer for a general public of leaners possessing no particular knowledge in the area of mental health or mental illness". It's a basic book that debunks myths on mental health and educates the lay person on understanding some of the causes, risk factors and treatments of those disorders.

From my experience working in psychogeriatric, I think a book like this should be essential reading for seniors who know little about mental health and for anyone who is caring for a senior with a mental disorder. I spend a lot of time in my work explaining facts about mental disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease to family members, and a resource like this would be handy. It's only 132 pages with large font and lots of bullet-point paragraphs making the info quick to read and grasp.

A beautiful book for creativity and journaling

My Review:
Need some "me" time to do some creative activity and introspection? The Happy Place Coloring Book is beautiful and perfect for rediscovering the joy of coloring, creating art, and journaling. With a few pencil crayons or markers, you can bring color to pages that draw the eye to create visually stunning images that are flowery, magical and bursting with nature scenes.

There are also 14 pages for journaling (see below) and 6 pages that are actually mazes. I love the images in this book. They are universally appealing and have a feel-good vibe about them.

A journal to get your pen moving

My Review:
This book is actually a journaling book with quotes on each page to motivate and inspire. This journal is divided into 9 chapters with quotes based on a different themes such as writing tips, the art of storytelling, the craft of writing and writing as medicine. I enjoyed the quotes that are at the top of each page as you can see below. There is not much writing from the authors. They give a brief introduction to the chapter and then leave you to write.

My only complaint is that it's not easy to write in because the book does not lay flat. A spiral bound version would have been more practical. I think this book is good for anyone wanting to be a writer and those lacking confidence to actually get writing and following their dream to do it. It's also good if you want to get some of those feelings out on paper. You know, those feelings that tend to surface during a lockdown, a worldwide pandemic...and situations where you cannot hug your friends.
