My Review:

MC Plays Hide and Seek is an educational book meant to introduce children to cancer disease. It's a book that will open discussion in a safe way and can be used as a teaching tool whether a child knows of someone with cancer or not. The book is marketed as a story but it's really a book of facts with cancer personified as a gender-neutral cartoon that describes what it does. I didn't particularly like the look of the cartoon, but maybe it was done intentionally since cancer is an ugly disease.

The book uses photos of children and medical staff with few illustrations apart from M.C. itself that appears on every page. The children and people depicted in the photos are of people from different backgrounds and ages. I thought this book a very clever way to help a child understand cancer with a message that hope, joy and love can make good things possible every day.

I think this is an important book that would be an essential addition to any home, school or community library.

My Hair Went on Vacation by Paula Quinn (Review and Giveaway!)

This children's book is about a beautiful little girl named Rosie who suddenly loses her hair because of the disease alopecia universalis. Such a lovely book!

My Review:
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani

This children's book is about a beautiful little girl named Rosie who suddenly loses her hair because of the disease alopecia universalis. In rhyming verse, the author introduces us to Rosie and her journey to self-acceptance. It's a book that teaches children to love themselves as they are and to be proactive.

This is such a lovely book! And it's based on the true story of the author's daughter. The reader can't help but fall in love with this little girl whose inner joy helps her not only come to accept her disease but to use her coping strategies to help other children who are also bald, whether because of alopecia or cancer. Rosie's compassion and generous spirit shines. She is a great role model for other children on how to turn adversity into something good.

At the end of the book is also a teacher's guide with an activity that can be done in the classroom to boost children's self-confidence. I thought this was an excellent activity. The illustrations from Chiara Civati are fun, bright and age-appropriate. Children will enjoy scrolling through these colorful pages as they learn about resilience and healthy self-love.

All readers, young and old, can benefit from reading this children's book. Who of us has not suffered from lack of confidence, self-esteem or courage at some point in our lives? Highly recommended as a book that should be in every classroom.

Paula and Rosie Quinn are the founders of Coming Up Rosies, a nonprofit dedicated to fulfilling Rosie’s dream to make bald kids like her smile confidently. At two years old, Rosie was diagnosed with alopecia universalis, an incurable autoimmune disease that results in baldness. From a young age, Rosie taught her parents how to embrace her difference by coming up with magical adventures of her hair each night before bed. Despite Rosie’s confidence, awkward questions and comments about her baldness started to bother Rosie. One day, her parents surprised her with a head scarf made from one of her paintings. Rosie immediately felt confident again, and wanted to share this feeling of pride with all bald children. Rosie lives in Chicago with her sister Caroline, her parents Paula and Larry, and their bernedoodle, Enzo. As a family, they love to go to Cubs games, have dance parties, and cook Italian dinners at home.

The Alycat series is a fun series, especially for children who love cats. I've already featured two books from this series and I was happy to see that another book has been recently released. This series focuses on teaching children life lessons. In Alyvat and the Tournament Tuesday, we learn the importance of working hard and persevering versus relying on good luck.

Personally, I do not believe in good luck and do not use this expression ever. As shown with Bugsy who believed his lucky ball would help him win his game, it's all the practice he did that helped him play well. Alycat made a mistake and this was turned into an occasion to learn something valuable.

The illustrations by Chiara Civati are fun and bright. Children who love cats will enjoy the cute faces of the different types of kitties representing the diversity among persons.

Alycat and the Tournament Tuesday is the fourth book in this award-winning series. It's a perfect book to add to the library of daycares and early elementary classes.

I was honored to have been invited by the Hollywood Swag Bags agency to include The Alycat Series in the swag bags honoring Oscars weekend. I signed and bundled up all four books, including a pre-released copy of Alycat and the Tournament Tuesday, along with a few Alycat and Bugsy plush toys and sent it off a few weeks prior to the event. Some of the recipients included Leonardo DiCaprio, Antonio Banderas, Joaquin Phoenix, Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson, Saoirse Ronan, Jonathan Pryce, Cynthia Erivo, Charlize Theron, Renee Zellweger, Tom Hanks, Anthony Hopkins, Joe Pesci, Al Pacino, Brad Pitt, Kathy Bates, Laura Dern, Florence Pugh, Martin Scorsese, Todd Phillips, Sam Mendes, Margot Robbie, Quentin Tarantino.

After the Oscars, the Alycat series received exposure from USA Today, The Boston Herald, National Examiner, and many other noteworthy news sources. The opportunity really took Alycat nationwide. Since then, other A-list actresses such as Michelle Stafford and Lilly Melgar have received the Alycat book collection and posted how much they love the series! It is really awesome to see them enjoying the series with their children! The buzz about Alycat going to the Oscars was a fun and huge milestone in my writing career.

Bad Day by Ruby Roth (Review)

Bad Day is a great learning tool that parents can use to teach their children to face their feelings and manage them in a healthy way.

Book Details:

Bad Day, written and illustrated by Ruby Roth
Published by North Atlantic Books
Published: September 10, 2019
Hardcover picture book:  32 pages
For children ages 3-7
Content rating: G

Book Description:

Popular children's book author-illustrator Ruby Roth gives us the heartening story of a little boy who's had a very bad day and just needs some quiet space to work out his feelings in his own way, on his own time.

What do you do when you’re feeling overwhelmed? In Bad Day, things are not going well for Hennie. Small things loom large, going from bad to worse as the day-that-never-ends goes on. But with a deep breath and some quiet reflection, Hennie begins to make sense of his feelings and discovers the power of turning inward. Affirming and funny at wonderfully relatable moments, this timely mindfulness resource helps children process their inner lives, guiding them toward self-empowerment and resilience.

My Review:
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani

As a parent, I have always felt that books are not only a window into other worlds but also resources to help our children navigate the difficulties of life. We live in a stressful world, and young children are feeling anxiety without knowing how to deal with it. I was happy to read Bad Day that tackles this topic and empowers children to become aware of and to change their thought processes to bring about change. This mindfullness habit is powerful and should be taught to all children.

In Bad Day, a boy is having a bad day and he doesn't know why. That happens to me too. Some of us instinctively want to withdraw, as does this boy. He puts a brown paper bag over his head to hide. This can be symbolic for retreating into our room, for shutting the world out, which is okay to do when we need to deal with our feelings. But after some reflection of what happened throughout his day that has made him feel bad and some wallowing in his grief and anger, the boy begins to reflect. He recognizes that he had a bad day but that he can analize his feelings (even if this is painful), handle them, and then decide he is strong and can feel good again.

Honestly, this is the first step to getting out of a depressed state. One needs to train the mind to see what has caused these feelings and then to decide to move on and learn from them. Having a children's book that deals with this important skill is so refreshing. I wish I had this book when I was a kid!

The illustrations are simple but perfect for this book since they truly focus on the boy and his being alone with his thoughts. Even a very young child could understand what is going on. There are no distractions in the illustrations, and the cartoonish drawings are appropriate for this age group.

Bad Day is a great learning tool that parents can use to teach their children to face their feelings and to see that things do get better. We have control over how we feel and teaching this to our children can empower them. Kudos to Ruby Roth for tackling this topic!

Stefano and the Dolphin: A personalized book for my nephew (Review) #ReadYourWorld

I found a company that publishes personalized books with the choice of having the story in one or two languages, so I decided to have a book created for my 4-year-old nephew Stefano. If you're looking for a unique gift for a child, check this out.

For children ages 4-7

Book Description:

TimTimTom’s Underwater Adventure is a personalised book in your language.

Available in: Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Chinese (Simplified or Traditional)

We have 3 books currently available, each in either one or two languages of your choice. You can simply order the book that you think you or your child might have the strongest connection to.

As I mentioned in another post, it's refreshing to find dual language books for children these days since there are many immigrants in North America. I wish I had had such books when I was growing up so that my mother who did not speak English could still read books to me with an Italian version in it.

Well, I found a company that publishes personalized books with the choice of having the story in one or two languages (bilingual) so I decided to have a book created for my 4-year-old nephew Stefano in a story about an underwater adventure in both English and Italian. He was thrilled to see a book with his name. My sister has read the book to him and she shared with me her experience. Stefano was engaged throughout the story, pointing at the fish and seeing himself in the story. He was interacting with his mother as she read the story and chatting with her about it. My sister loved reading this book to him.

The illustrations are colorful and bright, perfect for this age range. The world of sea creatures added a magical element to the story. Even before the book was read to him, my nephew was looking at the pages and pointing to the shark, dolphin and turtle. He loved the part about the dolphin tickling his toes. My nephew wanted to read it again and again. He sees this book as his book because it has his name in it and he associates himself with the character.

Tim Tim Tom books are perfect if you're looking for that unique gift for that special child in your life!

Order a personalized book for your child, niece, nephew or grandchild. Here's how it works:

About Tim Tim Tom, founded by Gaby and Kat:

A long, long time ago (think BC time – Before Children time!), the first TimTimTom story – An Underwater Adventure – took shape while Kat was taking an arts/illustration course in Belgium. The story was neatly set aside with the hope of, maybe, some day being published.

Many years later Gaby, while living in Germany, struggled to find her kids’ favourite bed time stories in Spanish. She tried to “simultaneously translate” the German texts into Spanish while reading out loud. However she constantly had to hear “Again please, but now in German” from her kids.

Good things come to those who wait. Years later, when we re-met in Hong Kong, the half forgotten story and the idea of publishing stories with your choice of two languages came to life adding an extra twist, personalising. By personalising the stories we entice the children to read (or being read to) in more than one language. This is how finally everything came together and TimTimTom was born on a hot morning hiking through the Hong Kong trails.

After trawling through research papers, consulting with experts, and, most importantly, talking to families with multilingual backgrounds, we realised that everyone has similar concerns: raising children with two or more languages is not an easy task, it takes years and it requires constant work from kids and parents alike. Early learning of languages requires persistency but also fun ways of enjoying time with the youngsters while using multiple languages. Few truly multilingual children books exist to help. While there is no easy solution we can make it more enjoyable with TimTimTom.

So, we hope you and your kids have as much fun reading these stories, as we had writing, illustrating, translating and editing, and re-editing, and re-editing these stories.

Do it Again! is a simple story about 3-year-old Amy who spends the day and has a sleepover with her cousin, aunt and uncle. She has a loving relationship with her relatives and they indulge her in play and affection. Amy is happy and repeats "Do it again!" as they play, read stories and show her affection.

This children's book shows the warm and close relationship that children in the Latino culture have with their relatives. Amy is comfortable being in the company of her aunt and uncle overnight without her parents, even though she is but 3 years old. Parents can use this story to demonstrate to their children that their circle of trusted adults can extent beyond mother and father.

A Bully on the School Bus by Dr. Mildred D. Peyton and Leah N. Peyton (Book Review and Giveaway!)

October is National Bullying Prevention Month! Last week I reviewed Sophia Writes to Her Bully and this week it's another book by the same author but with a different scenario.

Book Details:

Book Title: A Bully on the School Bus by Dr. Mildred D. Peyton and Leah N. Peyton
Illustrator: Andy Hoang
Category: Children's fiction, 26 pages
Genre: Education, Social Skills & School Life
Publisher: CreateSpace
Release date: Sept 2015
Tour dates: Oct 8 to 26 2018
Content Rating: G

Book Description:

Nicole is the main character in the book "A Bully on the School Bus." Nicole is a young girl who rides the school bus to school every day. It wasn't until Nicole started experiencing problems with another bus-rider named Dylan when she became uncomfortable being on this bus. Her experience with Dylan is a form of bullying, and she was frightened. After several incidences, Nicole made her parent aware and found a way to solve the problem.

My Review:
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani

Last week I reviewed another one of  Dr. Mildred D. Peyton's books titled Sophia Writes to Her Bully. As I mentioned in that review, I think bullying is a topic that parents need to take seriously and help their children deal with. A Bully on the School Bus is another book that brings up the common topic of bullying on the school bus.

Nicole is asked by a boy named Dylan to get up from her seat because he wants to sit there. He repeats the behaviour the next day more forcefully and Nicole tells the bus driver as her parents suggested she do. Once again, I liked that Nicole spoke to her parents about it and they both listened and gave her suggestions as to what to do if it happened again.

The book did not offer an alternate solution if Dylan didn't stop his behaviour, as my experience has been that bullies do not give up right awayFor this reason, I believe the story could have been better fleshed out since bullying rarely has an easy and quick solution. And most of the time, it takes several interventions before the problem is satisfactorily resolved. Nicole came across as fearless as she refused twice not to give up her seat. Usually kids who are picked on are not fearless, hence the reason they get picked on. However, I applaud Nicole for standing up for herself and she could be a good role model for children who have difficulty doing so.

Possible issues that could have been included: What if Dylan retaliated because Nicole told on him to the bus driver? Bullies know that once the bus driver is driving, he cannot see what is going on behind him. What if the bus driver was a big burly man and came across as intimidating? Not all kids are comfortable speaking to an adult they do not know very well about a problem that affects them emotionally. Perhaps Nicole's parents could have suggested that if Nicole was shy, they would have privately discussed the issue with the bus driver. Or that Nicole sit right up front close to the bus driver or that she not take a seat as soon as she enters the bus and remain standing instead until Dylan comes into the bus and that way he could not ask her to give up her seat. All these scenarios and strategies could have been discussed so that this book would appeal to children of various ages and circumstances.

Overall, this book offers a good idea on how to deal with a bullying situation. It's a book that parents can use with their children to open up the conversation on how to best deal with bullying. We need to keep the conversation going, so books like this one are important. The illustrations are age-appropriate and the author includes tips for students, parents and school personnel at the back of the book as well as links to helpful resources for parents.

Dr. Mildred Peyton is the President and Founder of Peyton Consulting, LLC. Dr. Peyton established her consulting firm, which was initially geared towards school bullying services, in March 2016. She was inspired to create Peyton Consulting and become a children's author on bullying after completing her doctoral research study entitled, "Exploring the Meaning of School Bullying Among Parents of Victimized Children."

During her undergraduate internship in 2002-2003 at Salisbury Middle School in Wicomico County, Dr. Peyton and her team developed and facilitated a mentoring program, providing one-on-one conflict resolution and mediating skills to students who were identified by the program coordinator with ongoing needs of behavioral issues. One of the key/primary areas Dr. Peyton and the other mentors focused on was educating and addressing bullying issues with bullies and victims. And in her graduate program, Dr. Peyton also facilitated a school bullying focus group in 2005 at Maryvale Elementary School in Montgomery County, to teach participants about bullying behaviors and how to avoid bullying others. She also attended several bullying workshops to learn about the latest studies while working with the students. Her passion on this topic followed her even as she served as a member on the Committee on Hate/Violence at Montgomery County Office of Human Rights, in 2013. There she developed a brochure for students and parents for the annual bullying symposium and, provided rich knowledge and skills on this topic throughout the year.

Today, the company has expanded its services to target workplace bullying as well. With the experiences of others and Dr. Peyton's personal experience with adult bullying in the workplace (which caused her to resign from her employer in 2016), she believes attention, guidance, and solutions are also critical in this area. Dr. Peyton holds a Ph.D. in Human and Social Services with a concentration in Social Policy Analysis & Planning. She has a Bachelor's degree in Social Work and Sociology and a Master's degree in Counseling Psychology. Social exclusion is a form of bullying experienced by some children. When it occurs, they feel isolated, alone, and humiliated. Bullying is a topic that parents should take seriously and know how to handle because it is one of the hardest things to experience, both for the child and the parent. A parent must be their child's advocate and help equip their child with the right tools to deal with bullying. As both a parent and a special care counselor who worked in several elementary schools, this is a topic I've had to deal with.

In Sophia Writes to Her Bully, we read about a young girl with a problem. Sophia wants to be friends with a group of kids who do not want to play with her. Her mother listens to her and comes up with an idea for a solution: write a letter to the ringleader Amber. The letter itself is good in that Sophia focuses on how Amber's actions make her feel rather than take on an accusatory tone. It gives Amber insight into how her behavior affects Sophia.

In this story, the letter works and Sophia is invited to play with the group. I liked that Sophia was encouraged to be proactive in finding a solution, although this particular solution may not work with every bullying scenario. Letting Amber know through a letter about how she felt, was an excellent way for Sophia to open up in a different way about her problem.

The teacher's advice to ignore the bullies and to make new friends was good, however, not acknowledged by the mother as an alternate solution if the letter did not work. For this reason, I believe the story could have been better fleshed out since bullying rarely has an easy and quick solution. According to the story, Sophia tried to play with this group of four children "every day", and "day after day, she'd try again to play with them." It was Sophia who sought out these kids who then rejected her, rather than the other way around, where a child tries to avoid the group of kids who seek to bully him or her.

Out of the whole class, why did Sophia insist on wanting to play with these four kids? What about all the other kids in the classroom? Were there other kids in her class who were lonely like her and could use a friend? Sometimes, there will be groups of kids who are mean and do not want to have another kid join their clique. Or they might just not want to feel forced to play with a kid they don't like. Realistically, there will be times when our kids will want to be friends with kids who want nothing to do with them. And because children are immature, they will resort to mean tactics to make that child leave them alone.

Meet the Author:

Dr. Peyton is committed to using her knowledge and skills to influence positive change among students and adults.
