Affirm Your Life, Stay Healthy, Color and Write: Books to help you set good goals for the coming year

There are a few books that I wanted to share with you that I think can help you to get off to a good start in this new year. Books that can motivate you to set goals in achieving personal growth, better health or quality time for yourself.

A journal for purpose and personal effectiveness

My Review:
Affirm Your Life is a guided journal that uses the wisdom of Dr. Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People to motivate and empower its users to find purpose or to re-center their life's goals, relationships, priorities, etc. The author writes in the first person and you feel like she's right these inspiring you to affirm your life. It's a fun workbook filled with quotes, journal pages, experiences, exercises and activities. It's small enough to fit in your purse, lightweight and easy to carry. My only complaint is that the font is small.

If you're looking to make time for personal growth in your life and to set new goals for the year ahead, this would be a great start.

An educational primer on mental health and healthy aging

My Review:
Dr. Murali Rao has written an easy-to-understand resource on healthy aging, mental health and mental illnesses. In his own words, he describes his book as "an educational primer for a general public of leaners possessing no particular knowledge in the area of mental health or mental illness". It's a basic book that debunks myths on mental health and educates the lay person on understanding some of the causes, risk factors and treatments of those disorders.

From my experience working in psychogeriatric, I think a book like this should be essential reading for seniors who know little about mental health and for anyone who is caring for a senior with a mental disorder. I spend a lot of time in my work explaining facts about mental disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease to family members, and a resource like this would be handy. It's only 132 pages with large font and lots of bullet-point paragraphs making the info quick to read and grasp.

A beautiful book for creativity and journaling

My Review:
Need some "me" time to do some creative activity and introspection? The Happy Place Coloring Book is beautiful and perfect for rediscovering the joy of coloring, creating art, and journaling. With a few pencil crayons or markers, you can bring color to pages that draw the eye to create visually stunning images that are flowery, magical and bursting with nature scenes.

There are also 14 pages for journaling (see below) and 6 pages that are actually mazes. I love the images in this book. They are universally appealing and have a feel-good vibe about them.

A journal to get your pen moving

My Review:
This book is actually a journaling book with quotes on each page to motivate and inspire. This journal is divided into 9 chapters with quotes based on a different themes such as writing tips, the art of storytelling, the craft of writing and writing as medicine. I enjoyed the quotes that are at the top of each page as you can see below. There is not much writing from the authors. They give a brief introduction to the chapter and then leave you to write.

My only complaint is that it's not easy to write in because the book does not lay flat. A spiral bound version would have been more practical. I think this book is good for anyone wanting to be a writer and those lacking confidence to actually get writing and following their dream to do it. It's also good if you want to get some of those feelings out on paper. You know, those feelings that tend to surface during a lockdown, a worldwide pandemic...and situations where you cannot hug your friends.

My Review:
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani

A few years back, I read Colleen M. Story's fiction novel Loreena's Gift, which I loved and then her first non-fiction book Overwhelmed Writer Rescue, a resource book for writers and creative artists. Colleen is the kind of author who knows how to take all of her life experience in the writer and health field and combine it to produce books that are honest and make you see things from a realistic, and very unique way.

In Writer Get Noticed! Colleen helps you to be the best writer according to the strengths you have, and the best part is that she helps you to discover those strengths. No two writers are alike, so it makes perfect sense that creating the author platform customized to your strengths is the way to go. So how does she do this? Through exercises of self-reflection. Some of these exercises are easy, but many of them are hard because they really make you dig deep down, opening up your eyes to the hard, but not impossible, dream of getting noticed as a writer.

Essentially, a writer needs to be a business person whether they like it or not and Colleen talks about this aspect. I loved the anecdotes and experiences from other writers that Colleen included in the book, making this also an inspiring read. It's clear that Colleen is a motivational speaker because this book is actually a workbook too, and she guides you step-by-step with an easy to read, motivating writing style that feels like she's right there with you. I suggest getting the paperback copy so that you can write your thoughts right in the book because that's how it's designed.

No matter what kind of writer you are, whether an author, journalist, or blogger you can definitely benefit from the advice that Colleen dispenses in this down-to-earth but motivational resource book. Highly recommended for all writers who want to demystify the "author platform" concept and get to work creating one that rocks for them.

Guest Post:

Why Your Book Isn’t Actually About YOU
by James M. Ranson

You read that right.

Yes, it’s YOUR book, and it definitely needs to come from your experience, include your stories, and sound like your voice.

But people aren’t going to read your book to learn about YOU. They’re going to read your book to learn about THEMSELVES. And if they pick up your book thinking they’ll learn about themselves but only end up learning about you, they’ll feel cheated.

In my book I share seventeen common mistakes people make when writing a book to support their business. A full seven of them fall under the category of not connecting your book to your audience--and the very first one I address is thinking your book is all about you.

In simple terms, if your book is just you talking about yourself for 200 pages, it won’t be connected to your audience. If your book isn’t connected to your audience, nobody in that audience is going to read it. And if nobody reads it, nobody is going to hire, book, or otherwise engage your services, because they won’t know (or care) that you exist.

The next two big mistakes authorpreneurs make around connecting to an audience in their book are not knowing who their audience actually is, and not understanding what they want. If you think back to the early days of your business, you may recognize these as mistakes you made then, too.

Entrepreneurs often start out wanting to be everything to everyone. When I started out, I wanted to be a content writer and a content editor and a speaker coach and a grant writer and a book editor. And I tried to provide those services to literally anyone who needed them. Imagine how many clients I got trying to do all of that at once! (Spoiler: not many.)

I like to use Marie Forleo’s trademark Jersey accent here, “If ya tawkin’ ta everybody, ya tawkin’ ta nobody.” If you’re trying to write a book that will help everyone, it’s not going to speak to anyone in particular. In order for your readers to learn about themselves through your book, they need to be able to see themselves in it, and they can’t do that until you know who they are and address them clearly and specifically.

So ask yourself, “Who do I really love to work with?” And, just as importantly, “Who do I really hate to work with?” Then use those answers to figure out who your book is talking to and who it’s NOT talking to. And be okay that it’s not talking to everyone! The narrower your audience is, the deeper you can go into their pain and the better your book will represent you as THE person who can help them.

Once you figure out who your book is talking to, get really clear on what those people need. What’s the pain that is driving them up a wall, that they come to you to heal, relieve, or solve? Write about that. Present your solution to their problems, help the reader understand why that solution works, and address objections or fears they may have around using that solution. This is what you DO, so it will be easy to give your readers what they want, now that you’ve decided to speak specifically to them.

The neat thing about doing all of this is that by fixing the mistakes of not talking to the right people and not addressing what those people need, you’ll also fix the mistake of making the book all about you. If it’s already all about them, the moments where you come into the picture will already feel relatable and helpful rather than arrogant or self-serving. So by putting your readers and their needs first, you’ll write a book that will serve you and your business light-years better than you ever could by putting yourself first.

The Life and Lessons of a Young Author by Sunayna Prasad (Review)

Book Details:

Book Title: The Life and Lessons of a Young Author by Sunayna Prasad
Category: YA Non-fiction, 19 pages
Genre: Writing
Publisher: Amazon KDP
Release date: Sept 1, 2018
Tour dates: Aug 13 to 31, 2018
Content Rating: G

Book Description:

Whether you are young or old, The Life and Lessons of a Young Author can offer those who dream of finding the right path in the world of writing and publishing. Sunayna Prasad shares her experience as a young author and discusses what went well for her and what she suggests to those who long for success.

Talking about her life as a published writer, Sunayna Prasad teaches you the rules of the writing craft and the standards of the publishing world, as well as additional tips and tricks. The Life and Lessons of a Young Author can help you choose your own writing and publishing paths.

My Review:
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani

Sunayna is a young author who loves to write. She has self-published two novels and has learned a few valuable lessons from her experience.

The Life and Lessons of a Young Author is a very short non-fiction book: 19 pages to be exact. It can be read in under an hour and is an honest account of the author's writing and publishing experience. It is a rather personal account with good advice for a newbie young author, such as to 1) have beta readers give your work honest feedback and learn from their constructive criticism, 2) make sure your work is professionally edited before publication, and 3) create a fanbase before publication.

None of this advice is new. It can be found easily online and is basic advice, but for a newbie young author, it may be new and definitely worth heeding. It is commendable for Sunayna to want to share her candid writing experience with other aspiring young writers, however, she needs to apply her own advice and reach a measure of publishing success before setting out to teach others about writing and publication.

Red Hot Internet Publicity: The Insider's Guide to Marketing Online by Penny C. Sansevieri

Red Hot Internet Publicity: The Insider's Guide to Marketing Online by Penny C. Sansevieri
Author Marketing Experts
ISBN: 978-1480224957
Published Feb 23, 2013
Trade paperback, 280 pages

The first time I read this book was in 2009, right after I published my novel and was learning how to market it. It was the best book I had read on marketing and it taught me so much about the latest most up-to-date marketing strategies. At the time it signalled me to all the explosive changes that were happening on the Internet and introduced me to the best use of social networking. You can read my glowing review here.

Sansevieri is truly an expert in her field. She's been publishing how-to books on publishing and the online revolution since 2001, way before ebooks were popular. She now has an updated edition of Red Hot Internet Publicity that's not only an excellent resource for book marketing but any marketing online. So whether you're an author or a business owner, this is the book you want to read. I've been blogging since 2009 and I've seen how extensive online marketing has become. It can be overwhelming at times because there are so many choices out there, so much that can be done. This is where Sansevieri takes you by the hand and shows you the way.

This book is divided into 5 parts: Red Hot Search Engine Optimization, Your Website, Red Hot Social Media, Red Hot Blogging, and Driving Even More Traffic. Once again, Sansevieri makes skilful use of bullet points, boxes, subtitles, snapshots of webpages, and numbered points in articles, rendering the book easy to read and to search for specific topics. I compared this revised edition to the one I previously read and thought it to be just as good, if not better. Sansevieri goes into more detail about social networking sites in this revised edition, especially since sites like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and LinkedIn have revolutionized how we market. She shows us how to market right. Anyone can have a Facebook page but not everyone will know how to use it to the best advantage.

This book is brimming with tips, how-to sections and resources. Reading through it, one can do research on how to best market according to one's product, one's budget, and the social sites that we understand and feel comfortable using. What's more, having all this info in one book is so useful and handy. I have learned tons of new stuff about online marketing and social networking. This is an easy book to understand and apply.

This book is a great resource for authors, business professionals, bloggers, including mom bloggers, and anyone who wants to get the word out about anything. It's a keeper on my bookshelf at home and at work.

Note: This book is rated C = clean read.

Wild Ink by Victoria Hanley (Review and Interview)

Wild Ink: Success Secrets to Writing and Publishing in the Young Adult Market by Victoria Hanley
Prufrock Press Inc.
ISBN: 978-1593638641
Published May 1, 2012
Paperback, 350 pages

After writing my first book, I started several other novels but nothing came of them and I found myself a little lost, until I started finding myself drawn more and more toward YA. I eventually started a YA novel, but I've encountered several obstacles. When I was offered to review Wild Ink, I jumped at the chance because it's just what I've been looking for.

I've read many good books on novel writing, but this one is geared for writers who want to break into the ever so popular YA genre. It's easy to read, well-organized and covers everything you need to know to write for teens, get an agent, and learn about the YA publishing industry. Hanley writes with an engaging style, and I found this resource book a pleasure to read.

Even though I know about novel writing, I paid particular attention to the two chapters that covered elements of novel writing, such as voice, point-of-view, dialogue, setting, conflict, themes, and so on. Writing for teens is different than writing for adults and I appreciated the advice and tips. The chapter that really got me thinking was the one that dealt with obstacles. I'm stuck in my writing and the author tackles each of the most common obstacles with good reasoning. Now I just need to apply the advice!

What I also found unique about this book is that Hanley includes tons of interviews with YA authors, and also some agents and publishers. I liked reading what they had to say. She also covers writing nonfiction YA, editing, and self-publishing. A lot of the info in this book was familiar to me mostly because I am a self-published author who's worked with editors, done research on marketing, and now blogs about books. Book reviewing has opened up the world of publishing to me better than any research. Therefore, I was able to appreciate how Hanley covers this in her book.

So if you are thinking of writing and publishing a YA novel, this one will set you on the right track. Hanley even made sure to include a whole chapter on resources for writers to complement Wild Ink and to help you hone your craft.

Note: This book is rated C = clean read.

A Short Q&A With Victoria Hanley

How did the idea for Wild Ink come about?
Participants in my workshops at writers’ conferences were eager for more complete information on writing for young adults (YA). There’s so much to say about this fascinating subject—more than can be covered in a few hours.

Why do you write young adult fiction?
I’m drawn to coming-of-age stories full of intensity, growth, and passionate voices.

What do you see as the future of young adult fiction?
More and more readers will discover this genre, and for good reason. YA novels are fast-paced and well-written, starring dynamic young characters who wrestle with all the pressures of life. Irresistible! I expect the market to keep expanding.

What about the future of YA nonfiction?
Nonfiction YA is an exploding genre right now. Hundreds of topics are just waiting for knowledgeable authors to write about them in a refreshing style that appeals to teens. (Wild Ink includes a chapter on writing nonfiction YA.)

What makes Wild Ink stand out from other books on writing/publishing YA fiction?
Wild Ink is packed with examples from novels such as Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games, giving readers in-depth tips on how to turn their own ideas into riveting stories. Dozens of interviews with writers, editors, and agents provide an inspirational view of what’s happening in the industry and how to approach finishing a book and getting published.

How can I contact you to learn more about Wild Ink or the young adult market?
Please contact reviews@prufrock.com for more information on my book or visit my website, http://www.victoriahanley.com, to find out how to contact me directly.
