Belches, Burps, and Farts Oh My! by Artie Bennett

Belches, Burps, and Farts Oh My! by Artie Bennett
Blue Apple Books
ISBN: 978-1609053925
Published Sept 2, 2014
Hardcover, 40 pages
Ages 4-8

Book Description:

He’s beheld the butt and offered the scoop on poop. Now Artie Bennett takes young readers on a discovery of those little (and not so little) puffs that exit from our mouths and duffs—the burp, the belch, and the fart! With Bennett’s signature combination of real science and zany rhyme, kids will learn the how, why, and where of gas-tastic eruptions made by people and animals, such as:

• why we can’t burp while on our backs
• which animals can’t “cut the cheese”
• how fish communicate via burp bubbles
• why soda and burps go together
• who farts more—boys or girls

For as Mr. Bennett puts it: Cows and pigs, crude or classy, Kids, grown-ups, we’re all . . . GASSY!

Our thoughts:

We've had the pleasure of reading all of Artie Bennett's books, and my son and I think they are a riot. This author has a way of taking a subject most would consider taboo, and he makes it fun for kids (and adults) to learn interesting facts about it, all with a fantastic sense of humour.

The text is in rhyme and states the facts of life about why we burp and fart (yeah, we average fourteen toots per day!) all with scientific back-up and comical illustrations that are striking, colourful and loud. We learned about animal and human behaviour,  and my son and I laughed so hard at some of the fart-astic facts and burp-tacular bits at the end of the book, like that of the silent-but-deadly fart and the "morning thunder" fart.

This book is a great way to bond and have fun with your kids. Sometimes, as adults we tend to be too serious. These subjects are popular with kids but not many books are written about them. I tip my hat off to those authors, like Bennett, who use their witty sense of humour to bring delightful books to children—books that celebrate the quirky, unique and sometimes embarrassing side to life.

Note: This book is rated C = clean (but smelly) read.

Here are other books by Artie Bennett reviewed and enjoyed by me and my son.

The Butt Book
Poopendous!
Peter Panda Melts Down!

I met Artie at BEA 2014 where he was giving away signed copies of his book along with...you got it, a whoopee cushion!
About the author:

Brooklyn native Artie Bennett employed his signature goofy-meets-smart style to craft this hilarious ode to the burp, the belch, and that popular "Bronx cheer", the fart. A former professional crossword puzzle prodigy, Artie Bennett is now making a name for himself writing smart and funny books about subject matter that kids love to read about, and enhancing Brooklyn's reputation for producing an uncommonly high per capita of humorists. In his M-F life, Mr. Bennett is an executive copy editor at a major children's book publisher. In his spare time, he collects words.

BEA Day 2: So much to see, where do I go first?

After a great night sleep--which I didn't think would happen on a hotel bed--I headed early to Javits Center on a cool but sunny morning to get a ticket to see Adriana Trigiani, who will be touring her book The Supreme Macaroni Company with my new company Italy Book Tours in August. (Yippee! But more on that later next week.)

Me with Adriana Trigiani

Adriana is an author who knows how to connect with her readers. She is funny, unpretentious and has a vibrancy that is palpable. By the time she was scheduled to sign her books, the line was very long. Adriana came out and greeted every single person in the line with a handshake. Then she stationed herself at her table and signed books for all of them. She's just awesome! No other author did that.

I met up with Laura Morelli, author of The Gondola Maker, and we sat down for a chat. She's currently on tour with iRead Book Tours and will be doing another tour with Italy Book Tours in the fall. She was at BEA to accept her Silver IPPY Award for Best Adult Fiction in Ebook. She's such a lovely person and a real pleasure to work with.

Me with Laura Morelli
I was so pleased to see great middle-grade titles that are perfect for my son, and I can't wait to share the books with him. I was happy to meet Artie Bennett, who in the past, has sent my son and me his funny children's books to review and we loved every single one. With titles like Poopendous! and The Butt Book, Artie quickly became one of my son's favorite authors. I got the chance to meet Artie and even chat with him after the signing. He quickly remembered me and my son when he saw my badge. He thanked us several times for our reviews. My son will be thrilled when I give him another signed book from Artie! This one is titled Belches, Burps, and Farts, Oh My! And it came with a whoopee cushion! Heh...heh...do you think my son will love this one too?

I spent a good part of the day networking and talking to publishers, authors and other bloggers. I was pretty beat when I made my way back to the hotel, but what a fulfilling day it was!

Peter Panda Melts Down! by Artie Bennett

Peter Panda Melts Down! by Artie Bennett, illustrations by John Nez
Blue Apple Books
ISBN: 978-1609054113
Published Feb 11, 2014
Hardcover, 40 pages

Looks like Artie Bennett did it again! This is an utterly charming book that had my son and I chuckling and reminiscing about his toddler years.

Three year-old Peter Panda spends the day with Mama Panda. But for little Peter Panda little frustrations can cause a meltdown, like wanting that goodie at the supermarket checkout or not wanting to leave the playground when it’s time to go or having to share that library book? Can you parents relate? Oh yes!

Tantrums are a daily part of toddler life, and we remember them well. I love the way Bennett uses humour, rhyme and creative prose to bring to life those memorable years. And when Mama Panda has had enough, well I could relate to that for sure! It’s clear there is affection and love between parent and child even though there is frustration. I think this just adds to the message that love is patient but we’re not perfect, and that parenting is hard sometimes.

My son, who is ten, found this book adorable along with its super cute illustrations. They were perfect for this story. Peter Panda is cuddly, but when he gets upset and begins to frown, well we just had to laugh, it was so cute.

My son was also very pleased that the author signed and addressed the book to him. We read and re-read this book and my son got out his other two books by Bennett: Poopendous! and The Butt Book and re-read them too. Usually, he passes on the children’s books that he’s read or that he reviewed with me, but Bennett’s books are part of his collection. He is now eagerly waiting for Bennett’s fourth book Belches, Burps and Farts, Oh My! Now doesn’t that sound like just the right book for young boy readers? Actually, any reader with a good sense of humour because Bennett’s books are the perfect medicine for gloomy moods.

Visit Artie Bennett's website. His bio is really worth reading. Such an interesting man!

Kid Konnection: Poopendous! by Artie Bennett

Poopendous! by Artie Bennett
Blue Apple Books
ISBN: 978-1609051907
Published March 27, 2012
Hardcover, 36 pages
Ages: 4 and up

When the author asked if we wanted to review his second book, my son was thrilled. He loved Bennett's first publication The Butt Book (read our review here). Following Bennet's penchant for writing about what no one wants to talk about, Poopendous is right up the ally for my son who often jokes about this topic with his buddies. Best of all, Bennett personalized the book by signing it with a personal message to my son that garnered an ear-to-ear brilliant smile from my kid.

Bennett's use of rhyming text, dialogue and educational tidbits about--you guessed it--poop, mixed with his sense of humour and colorful, funny illustrations from Mike Moran blend to make this an amusing and enlightening read. Bennett captures the curiosity and boldness that children display when they want to know about a topic. He clearly states that ... “now you have the inside scoop on every type and use of poop... Why should such wondrous stuff offend us?” Indeed!

Children will learn that in some parts of the world, dung is used to fertilize soil, to make a fire for cooking, to seal native shacks and more. My son thought this was a cool book because of these fascinating facts. He also thought it funny and he liked the illustrations. He liked learning about poop especially after having seen fossilized dinosaur poop at the museum last year, but he did think some uses of it in some countries was “ew!” gross.

This book is ideal for the curious kid (or adult) 4 years and older. It grabs your attention from beginning to end with witty text and eye-catching illustrations. I had fun reading it with my son and it will claim a spot in our library as a memorable read even years after my kids have grown.

Note: This book is rated C = clean read (even though the topic may not be! Ha!)

Kid Konnection: The Butt Book by Artie Bennett

The Butt Book by Artie Bennett, illustrated by Mike Lester (Rated: C)
Bloomsbury USA Children's Books
ISBN: 978-1599903118
Published Dec 22, 2009
Hardcover, 32 pages

That's right. This is a book about...butts! That unsung body part men don't talk about, women fret over, and children joke about. In a nutshell, this book is pure fun. The illustrations are simply hilarious. My son kept pointing out things I didn't even notice. My daughter and I loved the play on words, the rhymes and the reasoning that made us think, “Hey, my butt is important!”

Believe it or not, apart from being funny, this book is educational. We didn't realize how many words there are for butt. And the text is intelligent and insightful. Best of all, this book helps a child appreciate all his body parts, and why we are made the way we are. As my son concluded, “Butts are cool!”

Highly recommended for that silly kid in your life and for parents who want to have a rollicking good  time with their children while reading.
