Interview with Kelly Smith:
LCR: Welcome to Library of Clean Reads! Can you describe your book in 20 words or less?
KS: This book is my personal experiences of leaving toxic relationships with my mother, my ex Gabe, and more importantly with myself, behind.
LCR: Why did you write this book?
KS: I wrote this book Signs in the Rearview Mirror to help others. To let others know they are not alone in a toxic relationship, that there is a life, a happy, healthy life after you properly heal and recover from toxic relationships. There is hope and help out there is you really want it. I wrote this book so people know it is ok to let go of any toxic relationship they may be in. Including the toxic relationship with family members, spouses, friends and themselves. It is not enough to just get out of anything toxic. You need to learn and understand why you were in a relationship like that in the first place. Recovery is key.
LCR: What was the hardest thing about writing this book? The easiest?
KS: The hardest thing about writing this book was reliving painful parts of my past. I sat up nights screaming and crying. I laid on my bed with tears streaming down my face, at times unable to breathe, but I kept moving forward. I felt the pain time and time again, for a good cause. To help others heal and let them know they are not alone. I am not sure there was an “easy: part of writing my book. Even the acknowledgments were difficult, but I will say after the book was sone. After the book was in the hands of my editor and publishing company, I felt as if I could breathe freely again. I have been receiving a lot of positive feedback from my book. A lot of messages from both friends and strangers thanking me for writing this book, for giving hope where there once was none. It has been an amazing feeling.
LCR: What has been the feedback from your readers thus far?
KS: The feedback I have received so far has been amazing. I have been getting messages from all over the world thanking me for writing this book. It feels weird to me because I didn't realize how many people needed to hear that they are not the only ones going through or have gone through this sort of relationship. Some messages are not about romantic relationships. Some are about toxic parents and a few about recognizing their own abusive habits. I am honestly flattered.
LCR: Your best advice for women in toxic relationships?
KS: My best advice for anyone in a toxic relationship is to keep moving forward. Find and locate your support system and use them. When you are ready to leave and it is safe to do so, put a plan together to get out. When you're out and away be sure to go 100% no contact. If you have children together only speak about the kids. It is not easy, but possible. It is necessary for anyone who gets out of a toxic relationship to seek help. A therapist or a recovery program. You need to find out why you were in a relationship like this one in the first place.
LCR: Any future projects you are working on?
KS: I am hoping to begin my second book about my recovery program and dating after a toxic relationship. Not sure when I will begin is project, but as soon as I do I will make an announcement.
LCR: Thanks for chatting with me about your book.
