Mailbox Monday and It's Monday, What Are You Reading? May 2 Edition

Mailbox Monday was created by Marcia who now blogs at To Be Continued. It is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came into their house last week. Mailbox Monday now has a permanent home on its blog. Link up to share your MM.

It's Children's Book Week this week. I've read several good children's books with my son and will post reviews throughout the month. On another note, I got a call from Book Expo America asking if I was attending. I've decided not to. Good news: BEA is back in NY next year! At least that is what they told me.

Got some goodies in my mailbox in the last 2 weeks:

The Berlin Package by Peter Riva

Film producer Pero Baltazar thought he was taking a Berlin filming assignment. He needed the work, needed to get back in the saddle after fighting off a life-threatening experience in East Africa—alShabaab had attacked his crew, intent on a much larger terrorist attack. Suddenly he finds himself under orders from his part-time employers at the State Department and the CIA when he is handed a mysterious package. It’s an assignment he doesn't want. The problem is, it’s a job contracted by mysterious patrons who are prepared to kill him if he doesn't deliver.

Pero—now in far too deep—turns to friends, old and new, to help him unravel the mystery of the package, uncover connections to Nazi concentration camp gold recently sold by the US Treasury, and thwart the ex–Stasi chief, now head of a powerful banking group.

In this fast-paced sequel to Murder on Safari, Pero calls on Mbuno, his friend and East African safari guide, to anticipate the moves of his enemies as if they were animals—dangerous vermin—who have kidnapped both the film star and director. Mbuno’s tracking skills may keep them from getting killed—provided Pero can rope in more help and keep the CIA at bay.

Exhilarating and expertly crafted, The Berlin Package (Yucca Publishing; April 2016) is a gripping, page-turning thriller set in post–German reunification Europe.

As your own life improves, the influence and impact on your children will immediately become apparent!

Date Like a Girl, Marry Like a Woman by Jessica R. Bunevacz

Date Like a Girl, Marry Like a Woman: The Polished Woman's Guide to Love, Romance, and Sex will help you navigate how to have a good time with "Mr. Right Now" and how to hold onto "Mr. Right" once you find him. Providing a mix easy to follow rules, and anecdotes showcasing how they worked (and in some cases what happened when they were ignored), Jessica Bunevacz is the best friend you'll wish you had all along and the one whose advice you'll go back to again and again.

Unlike “The Rules”, its successors, or similar books offering guidance on how to snag a man, this book isn't about playing hard to get, instead it's about playing to win. And the only way that you can truly to that is when you acknowledge yourself as the MVP. This is why one of the first rules in Date Like a Girl, Marry Like a Woman: The Polished Woman's Guide to Love, Romance, and Sex is about shedding your insecurities, and why other rules offer insight on looking, feeling, and being your best, with an emphasis on having your own life. Additionally, while other guides stop when you get to a marriage proposal, this is the book you'll come back to after you say “I do”. Understanding that happily ever after may be a good way to end a movie, but isn't a good way to start a marriage there are real tips about everything from friendship to sex to finances with both humor and heart.

Ultimately Date Like a Girl, Marry Like a Woman: The Polished Woman's Guide to Love, Romance, and Sex is a work that is meant to transcend beyond the pages as it's lessons are applied in daily life. It never asks a woman to shy away from her impulses or to hide who she is or what she wants, and instead celebrates her independence and sensuality while showing her ways that she can make her romantic life more fulfilling.

  2. I won't be going to BEA this year either - the timing won't work out for me. Maybe I'll see you in New York next year!

  5. Hi Laura,

You are obviously on a Peter Riva run of books right now and although I have never read any of his books, I have come across his name before.

I think I might have been put off because he has also written some science fiction books and that is one genre that I just can't get along with.

I have revisited his page and sorted out the science fiction stories from the thrillers, so I may now add some of the latter titles to my own list, as the two you feature in this week's post, do sound rather good.

Thanks for sharing and enjoy your week :)

    1. He's a talented writer because he can write both genres well. I think you would like his thrillers.

  6. The Berlin Package looks good. I've never been to BEA though this year it would have been closer. The problem is where it falls in my school year. We can't get days off in the last month of the year which eliminates BEA for me. Maybe when I finally retire... Come see my week here. Happy reading!
