Book Description:

The Paleo. The Zone. The Gluten-free. Another day, another diet. We’re caught in a never-ending merry-go-round of weight loss plans, fueled by celebrity endorsers, TV doctors and companies angling for a piece of a $60 billion industry. But do these diets really work? And how healthy are they?

Registered Dietitian Lisa Tillinger Johansen examines dozens of the most wildly popular diets based on medical facts, not hype. And along the way, she reveals tried-and-true weight loss strategies, relying on her years of hospital experience, weight-loss seminars and community outreach efforts.
With insight and humor, Stop The Diet, I Want To Get Off shows that the best answer is often not a trendy celebrity-endorsed diet, but easy-to-follow guidelines that are best for our health and our waistlines.

My Review:
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani

Ever since I was diagnosed 15 years ago with fibromyalgia, I've been reading books about nutrition because I strongly believe there is a correlation between what we feed our bodies and illness. I finally decided to stay away from wheat products because of their inflammatory component so I was curious about what this book had to say.

Let me begin by saying that the author has extensively researched fad diets and her concern that it is affecting people adversely is a real one. Her tone is friendly and she makes you think with her reasoning and statistical facts. The bottom line is that one needs to eat a variety of healthy non-processed foods combined with a good exercise plan. This book is packed with information and is a handy resource that will keep you sane if you are trying to lose weight.

My problem has never been weight but joint pain, so staying away from wheat has made a difference in my life both in less pain and more energy. Losing some belly fat was an added advantage. I'm an advocate of holistic living so I eat organic produce from my dad's garden and make most of my meals from scratch. So reading about some of these fad diets was downright scary, like ear stapling and ...funny, like the baby food diet.

The author discusses portion sizes, taking in good fluids and how to read labels. These are important. When you know how to read labels, you can better control what you are putting into your body. She also gives tips when eating out at restaurants and smart shopping tips. I especially liked her chapter on exercise and how to make the lifestyle changes needed for a healthy weight plan. These were the best parts of the book for me because having knowledge is power but putting that knowledge to use is the only way to make the best of it. She was able to overcome any objection one might put forth as to why they don't exercise enough. Way to go, Lisa!

Overall, Lisa Tillinger Johansen offers a comprehensive look at the diets out there and how one can make good choices based on knowledge of food and how the body works rather than being influenced by a pop star or popular fad diet. She includes an appendix of useful websites one can refer to and her own references of research. Recommended for all who are struggling with weight loss or who want to take a more balanced approach to diet.

Note: This book is rated G.
