Kika the Upside-Down Girl is a fun, and really cool book that highlights the joy that children feel with the freedom that comes with propelling one's body upside down with flips, handstands and just plain tumbling. My son who loves to do just that--using my mattress as a trampoline--loved this book. He says kids who like to flip will be able to relate to Kika, as did he.

This book emphasized to me as a mom that it's important to allow kids the freedom of such movements. Ever since my son was very small he liked upside-down movement. He loves to dance, to flip on the trampoline and to swim and imitate the synchronized dance movements of the synchronized swimming team at our local pool who are mostly upside down in the water. He certainly did not get this from me, but I tried not to discourage this as a mom. Instead I learned to recognize the uniqueness of a boy who preferred this to baseball or hockey. And this book celebrates this!

The illustrations by Mike Motz are fun and lively, perfect for this book. The joy Kika feels with her movements are evident by the look on her face and body language. Kika's little adorable dog is her supporting fan as he imitates and follows her everywhere. What a great little addition to the story.

Kika the Upside-Down Girl a feel-good book that shows parents who are worried about the dangers of their kid flipping on a bed (I can certainly relate to that!) to find a safe and rewarding outlet for their child, such as a gymnasium.

Kudos to the author for showing kids that being different in this way can lead them to other sport opportunities as it did for her. Jessica Tudos is an Olympic gymnast. Her debut children's book succeeds very well as an empowerment to all children who are active and creatively choose to see the world from an upside-down perspective.

Note: This book is rated G and suitable for all readers.
