I’ve always been fascinated by the description of the “capable wife” penned by King Lemuel in Proverbs 31, a message given to him by his wise mother. So I was really curious to see how this woman’s description would be used in relation to women leaders. In Real Women Leaders, Troyer and Yoder explore the values shown in Proverbs 31 through the example of women of the Bible, among them Martha, Ruth, Euodia, Syntyche, Abigail, Lydia and Esther.
I enjoyed reading about these women, all of whom I already studied in depth through my worship and personal Bible study. The book’s layout includes snippets of the both authors' personal stories, examples of modern women who display Proverbs 31 values, and the IT factor at the end of each chapter that includes questions and summary points meant for reflection and action.
This book is clearly written for Christian women. It quotes scriptures throughout and makes reference to Jesus and his works. It’s also clearly meant to move Christian women to become active in the ministry. Because I’m an active Christian woman, I could appreciate this information, but I was expecting something else entirely based on the title of the book. I thought this book's main focus would be the practicality of these values for the entrepreneurial or business woman. Although it touches on this, I was hoping to see more examples specific to the workplace. Nonetheless, the ten principles taken from Proverbs 31 and shown in application for Christian women were good reminders for me, even if I had differing opinions at times about how certain Biblical verses were applied.
If you are a Christian woman but are not too familiar with the Bible, you will find this book insightful and enlightening, as most women don't realize how influential and leading women of Biblical times were.
