Things Remembered is a book
about female relationships, the importance of staying close to family
and the power of understanding and forgiveness. It also has a touch
of romance. I enjoyed it and found it an easy and pleasant read.
Karla, the eldest of three sisters
decides to visit her grandmother, Anna, who has congestive heart
failure and is dying. Anna raised Karla and her sisters when their
parents both died, but Karla who had been fourteen at the time had
been angry and too upset to appreciate what their grandmother had
done to take care of them.
Now, the reason for Karla's visit is
not because she wants to mend her relationship with her grandma, but because she is the
sister who has always taken charge and feels it is her duty to help
her grandmother put her estate in order. The month long stay with her
grandmother proves to be healing for Karla, as she comes to
understand herself and the connection to her own mother, which is so
important for Karla who still remembers her. She also gets to know
her grandmother in ways she never did before.
There were times I didn't understand
Karla's animosity, but for the most part, since I am the eldest of
three sisters, I totally understood Karla's innate sense of
responsibility as firstborn. She is a generous person who has always
tried to take care of her sisters, especially the youngest, who is a
fledgling actress. She is also honest and forthright and she loved
her sisters and was not afraid to show or say it, even when things
got difficult between them. Heather, the middle sister was refreshing
as the married nurturing one with a hubby, two small boys, and
another one on the way.
Karla is divorced but still hanging on
to the friendship of her ex-husband until she meets Mark Taylor, a
veterinarian and father of a 5 year-old adorable girl. As Karla
revisits her past living with her grandmother, she also creates new
memories with new friends and with this new man in her life, giving
her the impetus to let go of what is stopping her from being truly
happy and making up for lost time. Things Remembered is a
heartwarming story about reconnecting failed relationships and the
importance of family.
