Sophie the Awesome by Lara Bergen (Rated: C)
Scholastic Inc.
ISBN: 978-0-545-14604-3
Publication Date: May 2010
Paperback, Ages 7-10

Synopsis:
Sophie Miller is a totally average third grade girl. She's a middle child, lives in a town called Ordinary, and has finished third in every race she's ever run. Boring! But Sophie is determined to find a name that proves just how special she really is. It doesn't take long before she comes across the perfect title--Sophie the Awesome! But living up to a name like that takes more than just determination, especially if super-annoying Toby Myers has anything to say about it. Can Sophie prove her awesomeness...and prove everyone wrong?

Our thoughts:

This is a cute and funny account that takes place during one school day in the life of Sophie Miller, a third grader who decides she will be Sophie the Awesome. She sets out to prove she is awesome and goes through several mishaps until something happens at the end of her school day that not only proves it but also gives Sophie the idea for a new name!

Initially, my 9 year-old daughter thought this book wouldn’t be interesting, but after reading it together she said it was funny, with Sophie reminding her of a third-grade version of Junie B. Jones, a rambunctious character in a series she loved when younger.

This is a fun, easy-to-read book. In a light-hearted way, it deals with school life, friendships, and trying to stand out. Comic-like and age-appropriate illustrations are interspersed throughout the story. The first in a series, this book is ideal for the fun-loving extrovert girl in your family who may also be a reluctant reader.
