REMAKE by Ilima Todd Book Trailer Release with Giveaway

Last year both my daughter and I read REMAKE by Ilima Todd (read our review). We really liked this dystopian novel that was full of twists and turns.

Shadow Mountain has just released the cinematic book trailer for this first novel in a planned trilogy. Wow! It's great. Check it out below. It makes me eager for the next installment.

It's been awhile since I read a good Regency Romance and I was looking forward to digging into this one. It was even better than I had anticipated! So far, all the novels in the Proper Romance division sent to me by Shadow Mountain have been great.

This story is so much more than a romance. It is about a young self-absorbed debutante discovering and becoming her true self when faced with adversity and a rare medical condition. Amber is a beautiful woman of high social status who has her pick of men who have a title and fortune, but all of that is threatened when she suffers a public humiliation. Her future looks bleak and she wonders if she will be alone for the rest of her life.

YA has become one of my favorite genres. When this book came up for review, I was excited to be reading it. Perhaps my expectations were too high. The story line caught my attention right away. Stella has a beautiful singing voice and dreams of someday performing on Broadway, but an accident causes her to lose her hearing. Hayden is a boy in her school who stutters. They forge a friendship that helps them overcome the obstacles that hold them back. Sounds great, right? Unfortunately, I  began to struggle with this novel almost from the very beginning.

Remake by Ilima Todd (Review and Giveaway)

Remake by Ilima Todd
Shadow Mountain Publishing
ISBN: 978-1609079246
Published October 14,2014
Trade paperback, 304 pages

Book synopsis:

Male or Female?

Nine is the ninth female born in her batch of ten females and ten males. By design, her life in Freedom Province is without complications or consequences. However, such freedom comes with a price. The Prime Maker is determined to keep that price a secret from the new batches of citizens that are born, nurtured, and raised androgynously.

But Nine isn’t like every other batcher. She harbors indecision and worries about her upcoming Remake Day—her seventeenth birthday, the age when batchers fly to the Remake facility and have the freedom to choose who and what they’ll be.

When Nine discovers the truth about life outside of Freedom Province, including the secret plan of the Prime Maker, she is pulled between two worlds and two lives. Her decisions will test her courage, her heart, and her beliefs. Who can she trust? Who does she love? And most importantly, who will she decide to be?

Our thoughts:

I've been waiting to read this book since I heard about it at BookExpo America. I let my daughter read it first and she finished it quite quickly. A good sign since she lingers with books that don't grab her from the very beginning. Lately I've been reading more YA and especially dystopian novels, and my daughter who is now 13 discovered this genre and she loves it. So this was the perfect escapism book for both me and my daughter. Like her I devoured it quite quickly too. And we both felt the same way about it, which is interesting because she is a teenager and I'm, well... a lot older!

Nine's world is quite different from any other dystopian world we've read because there are no families and children are raised in batches with hormone suppressants so that they do not develop physically until they reach age 17 and are sent to the Remake facility where they can decide what gender and occupation they would like. The hormone suppression reminded me of The Giver. It took some getting used to reading about teenagers who were more like younger children because they were underdeveloped. But Todd does a good job of convincing the reader as we get immersed in the story. Their innocence was refreshing.

I had some questions about how Freedom Province actually came to be and the daily life in that place. We get a glimpse of it when Nine and her best friend Theron go for a night out, but I would have like to know more. My daughter felt the same way. When a terrible accident on their way to the Remake facility separate Nine and Theron, with Nine washing up on the shores of an island, things change drastically for Nine.

She has to deal with loss and with the sudden changes in her body as she starts to mature physically. (Teens can definitely relate to that! I even remember those puberty changes.) She meets an actual family and learns about the roles of mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters, things she knows nothing about. The message that family is important and essential came across beautifully in this novel. The descriptions of island life and teamwork contrasted well with the controlled and narcissistic atmosphere of Freedom.

Nine also experiences love for a boy in a way she never knew before. I don't mind a little romance in a dystopian novel, but both my daughter and I felt that the romance was a little too heavy and that at times it overpowered the dystopian plot line. We weren't aware that there is a sequel to this novel so that the ending left us feeling like her decision was not made in the right way. We were both a little stunned. Not by her choices, but how she made those choices. About why she did not share her new-found knowledge. However, if we felt that way, clearly it's because we got so immersed in Nine's world and wondered if there was more to come. The answer is yes. So now we have to patiently wait for the second book to see how the rebellion will come about, what role Nine has in it, and how this will affect her relationships.

If you like dystopian novels with romance, pick this one up. It's different enough and will immerse you in its story. My daughter and I loved how it kept us wondering what would happen next. Todd skilfully introduced twists to the story when least expected. We look forward to the next installment!

Note: This book is rated V = minor violence. There is a scene where a character gets beat up and another where Nine witnesses cruel acts from the Freedom police. No bad language or sex scenes, just kissing.

BEA Day 3: Meeting Awesome Authors and Publicists (Part 1)

I thought I had an awesome day on Thursday at BEA when I met some favorite authors (you can read my post here: BEA Day 2: So much to see, where do I go first?) But Friday proved to be just as fun and I had the privilege of meeting some amazing authors that made an impression on me. I will spotlight them in this post and also in Part 2 tomorrow. And I look forward to reading their books!

First, I was so excited to finally meet in person Michelle Moore, publicist at Shadow Mountain. I've worked with her on tours in the past and she is just lovely. Shadow Mountain has some great titles being released and we chatted about our work in the industry. So insightful to talk to publicists!

Me and Michelle Moore of Shadow Mountain
I had the privilege of meeting and chatting with celebrity fitness and nutrition expert Lisa Lynn. Such a lively, enthusiastic and fun person to be with! I liked her instantly. Not only did she take a picture with me but she picked me up. Yeah, you heard right. She just bent down and scooped me up like I weighed nothing. She may be small but she's strong! And she complimented me by telling me that I was light and easy to lift. Thank you, Lisa!

Lisa Lynn and Me
Can you see me holding on tight? I needn't have worried, this gal is strong!
I will be starting a new feature on LCR, focusing on wellness. I will have Maria Fragapane, Kinesiologist on board with me to review books we think you'll love if you are into health and fitness. And we're targeting overall wellness, from brain health to physical and emotional health. I will be featuring Lisa Lynn's The Metabolism Solution: A New Way to Lose Weight in my wellness features. She's motivating and passionate about helping women (especially those over forty) to look and feel good. Yes!

Next, I met Raina Telgemeier. My daughter and I loved her book Smile. And now Raina's upcoming graphic novel is Sisters. My daughter was thrilled to get a signed copy and she's already zipped through it. Look for her review in August. If you've never picked up Raina's books, do so because not only are her stories good but her illustrations are so full of life and emotions. Great for middle graders and teens!

I was so pleased to meet Janet K. Shawgo who writes one of my favorite genres: historical fiction. She was signing copies of Look For Me, the first book in a 14-time award winning series. Janet, who was a traveling nurse for fifteen years, writes "a gripping tale of Civil War-era romance and espionage", which I can't wait to read! The synopsis caught my attention immediately. She, her sister and their publicity crew were wearing costumes from her book's era, which I thought was so creative.

Me and Janet K. Shawgo
Finally, I stopped by Moody Publishers when I spotted Tessa Afshar's books on display. I had a great chat with the publicist and then Tessa joined us. I was thrilled to meet her. She graciously gave me Harvest of Rubies, the first book in a series. I had already read the second book and thought it so kind of her to offer me the first! I also got her upcoming title In the Field of Grace, which is the story of Ruth. If you haven't guessed yet, Tessa writes biblical retellings.

Tessa Afshar and Me
Of course, I met many other authors and publicist, of whom I do not have pics, but with whom I enjoyed networking. Tomorrow I will post more pics and spotlight other authors that made an impression on me.

Read Part 2 of BEA Day 3: Meeting Awesome Authors and Losing Their Books!

If you went to BEA or participated in BEA, which authors or events stood out to you? I'd love to hear about it!

Blackmoore by Julianne Donaldson

Blackmoore by Julianne Donaldson
Shadow Mountain
ISBN: 978-1609074609
Published Sept 9, 2013
Trade paperback, 320 pages

I thoroughly enjoyed this Gothic regency romance and was swept away into this story with its unusual heroine. Kate Worthington grew up with her childhood friends Sylvia and Henry Delafield, who are from a well-to-do family. They have a stately manor named Blackmoore on the cliffs above the seashore where they spend their summers and where Kate has longed to go but has never been allowed because the Delafields do not approve of her family. When Kate becomes a young lady, she finally gets to visit Blackmoore, and all her longings unravel as she struggles to protect the man she loves.

The story alternates between the present and the past (4 years previous) as Kate's story comes to light and the mystery of why she is so adamant about not marrying is revealed. We also get to know exactly why the Delafields disapprove of her family. I must say that this built suspense and kept me turning the pages. There were a few twists and turns in the story. The dialogue is witty and propels the story along beautifully. This is not a typical romance but a proper Austenesque-like one where the tension builds between the two characters until I was so emotionally invested I couldn't put the book down. It's the best kind of romance. Full of real emotions, situations and circumstances. It's sexy without the sex.

Kate is a strong independent character. She is different and I never knew what to expect from her. She dreams of going away to India with her aunt. She is willing to sacrifice for the one she loves. Henry is a strong character too, with good principles and a certain subtle vulnerability the only enhanced his good character and manliness, if that makes sense. I loved how well the author built up these main characters. I loved their scenes together, past and present, which made me understand the extent of their relationship and what it was built on.

Now that I've read this book, I really look forward to reading Edenbrooke, also by this author. If you like a clean but tension-filled Regency romantic drama, this one is sure to please. I can't wait to see what else this author will come up with!

Note: This book is rated C = clean read.

Longing for Home by Sarah M. Eden

Longing for Home by Sarah M. Eden
Shadow Mountain
ISBN: 978-1609074616
Published Aug 2013
Trade paperback, 432 pages

Katie Macauley was eight when her family lost their land during Ireland's Great Famine. Her father became a broken man and her younger sister died. Katie blames herself for this loss and vows to make it up to her family even as she enters into a life of servitude from a young age and is separated from her family for good.

Eventually she takes on the position of housekeeper in Hope Springs, Wyoming. But the small town is divided because the Americans despise the Irish. Despite this feud, Katie finds a family among the Irish immigrants and must decide whether to follow her heart in Hope Springs or return back home to gain her father's forgiveness.

I enjoyed this heartwarming novel mainly because the author has a way with dialogue and was able to bring the Irish expressions and culture to life. I was pulled into the story immediately because of the witty banter between Katie and the O'Connor brothers. Katie was an interesting character, feisty and vulnerable at the same time. I was intrigued by the events in the past that had turned her into such a reclusive figure with barely any friends in the twenty years she was in servitude.

Halfway through, however, it began to drag a little for me. The plot was good but came in second to the romance. I would have gladly forgone some pages of dialogue that was sweet but that no longer moved the plot along for me. (This is a long novel of 432 pages.) As a result the story was a little anticlimactic for me. Everything pointed toward a climactic event between the townsfolk because of the tension the author skilfully built from the beginning, but it didn't really happen or perhaps not like I thought it would. Also, the change in Katie's personality was too drastic in the few months she was there. It was like she was a different person altogether and some of her internal conflicts no longer seemed important to the story.

Apart from these issues, this was a good story. If you like clean romances with good characters in a genre not labelled Christian fiction, then I suggest you try this one.

Note: This book is rated C = clean read.
