Book Title: CRACK THE CODE: 10 Proven Secrets that Motivate Healthy Behavior and Inspire Fulfillment in Men Over 50 by Louis Bezich
Category: Adult Non-fiction, 302 pages
Genre: Men's Health / geared towards Men Over 50
Publisher: Somo Press, LLC
Release date: November 2018
Tour dates: Apr 13 to Apr 24, 2020
Content Rating: G: No sex, violence, or bad language. Written for men over 50, or their wives.
Book Description:
Crack The Code presents an unconventional, motivation-based approach to health for men 50 and over. Ten strategies for creating and maintaining inspiration for a healthy lifestyle are advanced from a platform of survey research, interviews, and the author’s personal experiences. Primary audiences for the book are men over 50 and the people that love them; their wives, partners, children, and grandchildren. Additional audiences include health care providers, insurers, policymakers, men of all ages who want to find motivation for healthy behavior and anyone who has struggled with their health.
Crack The Code’s focus on motivation and the psycho-social underpinnings of behavior fills a gap in a market dominated by publications on traditional diet and exercise. By digging deeper and using everyday men as a source, Crack The Code breaks new ground for a burgeoning segment of the baby-boomer population that is in desperate need of help. The potential to influence men of other ages as well as health care providers, insurers and policymakers, creates a tremendously valuable read.
My Review:

Having a husband over 50 sparked an interest in me to read this book. I'm in the field of psychology so I was even more intrigued. I don't think there are enough books out there on men's health, and I do believe there is a gap in the 50+ men category in the health genre, making me applaud the author for not only tackling this subject but doing his own research with his own funding.
The first 50 pages or so are heavy with stats and reads like a textbook, so I suggest you move quickly through this section if you're not interested in the author's research methodology. The rest of the book goes into detail about the ten proven secrets to motivate healthy behavior. What I appreciated is that this book truly is from the perspective of a man, written with the male thinking in mind. As a woman and wife, I'm not sure I could help my husband just by reading this book as it is very much also a workbook, but it did give me some insights on what could motivate men over 50 by reading the anecdotes of the men interviewed by the author.
This book is a self-help book for men who want to make healthy changes but are stuck. If you are a man who likes to understand the psychology behind the behavior, in other words, why it's so darn difficult to adopt a healthy lifestyle, then you will enjoy the author's elaborate explanations. If, on the other hand, you want a straightforward methodology that's easy to follow, you will have to wade through the author's wordy chapters and focus on the practical steps he provides within the book's pages.

Title: Head Strong: The Bulletproof Plan to Activate Untapped Brain Energy to Work Smarter and Think Faster in Just Two Weeks
Author: Dave Asprey
Publisher: Harper Wave
Category: Adult Non-Fiction, 352 pages
Genre: Health, Fitness and Dieting
Published: April 4, 2017
Content Rating: PG for language
Book Description:
From the creator of Bulletproof Coffee and author of the bestselling The Bulletproof Diet comes a revolutionary plan to upgrade your brainpower—in two weeks or less.
For the last decade, Silicon Valley entrepreneur Dave Asprey has worked with world-renowned doctors and scientists to uncover the latest, most innovative methods for making humans perform better—a process known as "biohacking." In his first book, The Bulletproof Diet, he shared his biohacking tips for taking control of your own biology. Now, in Head Strong, Asprey shows readers how to biohack their way to a sharper, smarter, faster, more resilient brain.
Imagine feeling like your mind is operating at its clearest and sharpest, and being able—possibly for the first time in your life—to do more in less time? What it suddenly became easier to do the very hardest things you do? Or if you could feel 100% confident about your intellect, and never again fear being the person in the room who just isn’t smart enough, or can’t remember something important? How would you treat people if the mood swings, short temper, and food cravings that disrupt your day could simply disappear?
In Head Strong, Asprey shows us that all of this is possible—and more. Using his simple lifestyle modifications (or "hacks") to take advantage of how the structure of your brain works, readers will learn how to take their mental performance to the next level. Combining the latest findings in neuroscience and neurobiology with a hacker-inspired "get it done now" perspective, Asprey offers a program structured around key areas of brain performance that will help you:
Power the brain with exactly what it needs to perform at its best all day long
Eliminate the sources of "kryptonite," both nutritional and environmental, that make the brain slower.
Supercharge the cellular powerhouses of our brains, the mitochondria, to eliminate cravings and turn up mental focus.
Reverse inflammation to perform better right now, then stay sharp and energized well into your golden years.
Promote neuron growth to enhance processing speed and reinforce new learning—hotwiring your brain for success.
Asprey’s easy to follow, two-week program offers a detailed plan to supercharge brain performance, including: which foods to eat and which ones to avoid, how to incorporate the right kinds of physical activity into your day, a detox protocol for your home and body; meditation and breathing for performance, recommended brain-boosting supplements; and how to adjust the lighting in your home and work space to give your brain the quality light it thrives on.
A better brain—and a happier, easier, more productive life—is within reach. You just need to get Head Strong.
Before this book, I had not heard of Dave Asprey. When I came across this second book of his, I was immediately attracted to the topic since I love learning about neuroscience. I really enjoyed learning about the mitochondria and how sugar and the wrong kind of fats affect its performance. This in itself motivated me to continue in my resolve to eliminate most sugar from my diet and to keep eating good fats like avocado, coconut oil and olive oil. A fat brain is a healthy brain!
This book is divided into three parts. In addition, each chapter ends with key points to remember and then three things you can do right now to apply what you've read. I liked this and thought it was a good way to make practical use of the information just read. The first part is all about the mitochondria, neurons and inflammation. I loved this part because I learned quite a few things and I connected other info I had learned from other books I'd read recently.
The second part is about being in control of your head where the author discusses brain fuel, toxic food and toxic metals and the effect of light on our brain. I also enjoyed his chapter on exercise and getting the right kind of exercise. Once again, I learned a lot of new info and I'm more resolved now to move more (since I work on my computer all day), to sleep better and to reduce how much blue light my family and I are exposed to.
The third part is the two-week program. If you're vegan, don't drink coffee or haven't purchased the author's Brain Octane Oil then you'll find this diet hard to follow. The recipes gave me some idea on how to incorporate good fats into my diet. I'm resolved to find grass-fed meat and grass-fed butter. I do believe that we do need to supplement our diet with high-quality supplements because our food supply is depleted and we don't get the nutrients we need on a daily basis. The author includes a section on a variety of supplements that are particularly good for the brain and that can be purchased at any local natural store.
The book includes a bibliography with reference notes and an index. Overall, I think that knowing the science of why I should eat certain foods and eliminate others or change my lifestyle habits is powerful for me. It gives me the motivation to make the changes that I know will be good for me and my family. Even making a few key changes can make a whole lot of difference. Head Strong is a good reference book.

Book Description:
Are you tired of fad diets and all-juice cleanses? Confused about all the conflicting nutrition information available? Over feeling guilty for your nutrition slip-ups? Finally learn to trust yourself to make slimming, nutritious and energizing choices without dieting, confusion and self-judgment! Award-winning Health Coach and Women’s Lifestyle Expert, Marissa Vicario, wasn’t always as healthy and happy as she is today. There was a time when her diet had more macaroni and cheese and G&T’s than broccoli and green smoothies. It wasn’t until she hit rock bottom that she realized something had to change, and it was in that moment that she vowed to make her physical, mental and emotional well –being a top priority.
Your Holistically Hot Transformation follows Marissa’s wellness journey from unfulfilled corporate professional to purpose-driven women’s lifestyle aficionado committed to making healthy, fit and balanced (aka Hot), less intimidating, more approachable and totally attainable to women regardless of where they are on their own path to a healthy lifestyle. You’ll find advice for making healthy living a habit, tips for stocking a healthy kitchen, guidelines for understanding the hunger and fullness cues your body sends you, simple ideas for self-care you’ve never tried before and a sprinkling of fast, fool-proof recipes and motivational mantras. Smart, honest, and actionable, Your Holistically Hot Transformation is the most relatable health and nutrition book of its kind.
I love the holistic lifestyle and will read books that educate me on nutrition and wellness. When I came across this book, I wanted to read it. I was offered the audiobook and enjoyed listening to it. Marisa Vicario is a health and nutrition coach and listening to her tell about how she came to change her diet and lifestyle was like listening to a girlfriend over coffee.
Vicario covers the basic so if you've read up a lot on this topic you might already know most of the info, although I was still surprised by some things I didn't know, like how good coconut oil is for teeth and gum health. I appreciated the repetition of info I already knew, like to keep well hydrated by drinking more water. We all know that, right? But how many of us actually do it? Most times, we need to hear info a few times before we begin to accept and apply it. I'm now drinking more water thanks to the app Vicario suggests in her book!
I prefer owning reference books because I'm the type that likes to underline, highlight and make notes in the margin. I missed that with this book, although Vicario does include a companion 32-page PDF doc that she refers to in the audio. There are charts, illustrations, diagrams and a few recipes that are helpful. I suggest getting the book too, although listening to a non-fiction book really helps to cement some of the important info you want to retain.
The audio is narrated by Vicario herself, and she does a pretty good job. I enjoyed listening to her voice. There were a few times when she stumbled on words and I could hear the smacking of lips, something that you won't hear with professional narration, but after a while I was so engrossed in the book that I no longer noticed these small foibles.
Your Holistically Hot Transformation is the perfect book for the woman who wants to make better health choices but is struggling or finds it too overwhelming. I liked that Vicario simplifies it all. You can tell she's a coach. She is encouraging and her small steps toward change are very do-able and are like stepping stones to a better lifestyle. Her positive and caring attitude shines through in her new book. If you need a helping hand to get educated on nutrition, this book is for you. I am passing it on to my teen girl who seems to have forgotten all the nutritional stuff I taught her as a kid.

Interview with Marissa Vicario
Q: What inspired you to write Your Holistically Hot Transformation?
A: Health and wellness has become mainstream in recent years, so there's a lot of nutrition information available from a multitude of sources, most of it competing. Because I studied nutrition, I can sort through it all, but what about the woman who is just getting started on her nutrition journey? I noticed that when I started working with a client, she was almost always confused and misinformed about how to eat and the mindfulness and self-care parts were most often completely missing. I wanted to simplify everything for the woman who is just starting out, confused to the point of paralysis or has tried everything to no avail and wants to start over with a more balanced approach. I remember being that woman at one time, so I wrote the book I would have wanted to read. Sometimes we need someone to reassure us it doesn't have to be so complicated and that everything is going to be OK. That's Your Holistically Hot Transformation.
Q: What does Holistically Hot mean?
A: It can mean anything to anyone. For the purposes of the book, "Hot" refers to being healthy, fit and balanced. To me, it means looking and feeling my best naturally without dieting, calorie counting, juice cleanses and other fads. It's things like green smoothies and dark chocolate, daily. Rocking sneakers and a yoga mat just as well as high heels and a manicure and fueling your body, not starving it. It's finding that authentic, healthiest version of you and feeling good about how you arrived there.
Q: Why did you choose to self-publish?
A: I've had this book in me for many years and I knew that as a first-‐ time author, traditional publishing would take some time, possible several years. I'm a "make things happen" kind of person and I didn't want to wait, because I know the world needs this book. I think what really solidified my decision was reading Wayne Dyer's book, I Can See Clearly Now. He talks about his own journey as a best-selling author. His first book was self-published and he worked tirelessly to make it a success. It really inspired me to action.
Q: How is Your Holistically Hot Transformation tied to your real life experiences?
A: The entire book is based on my personal experience starting with how I hit rock bottom. All of my experiences up until that point were working in unison to lead me to where I am today. I use a lot of personal stories throughout the book to illustrate the concepts, like listening to your body or cooking at home for one. Everything in the book is something I've tested or rely on in my own life, that's how I know it works!
Q: What other projects are in the works?
A: I'm starting the process of writing my next book. As of right now, it will be more like a memoir.
Q: What kind of training do you have?
A: I received my Health Coach training from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) and I'm board-certified by the American Association of Drugless Practitioners. I've taken cooking classes at the Natural Gourmet Institute and I have a certificate in Nutrition for Disease Prevention from the University of California San Francisco. I started my career in corporate communications before making a change so my bachelors degree is in journalism from Northwestern University and my masters degree is in Marketing from New York University.
Q: What is your philosophy on nutrition and wellness?
A: Start where you are and do what you can. Eat real food and cook for yourself more often than you dine out. Health and wellness can be really simple if you let it.
Q: What was the most challenging part about writing this book?
A: I've always struggled with putting myself out there and telling my story. So, it was hard for me to be vulnerable in the book and tell some of those stories I've never shared anywhere before. Reliving those moments as I wrote the book wasn't always comfortable. Likewise, I know my nutrition philosophy isn't always widely popular so I worried how it would be received. Ultimately, I knew this book would be an expression of me and I can't please everyone. Even if this book helps just one person, it will have served its purpose, so that's what kept me moving forward.

I like learning about naturopathy and the holistic lifestyle, so when I saw this title I knew I wanted to read it. Just the Essentials is the perfect starter book for those who want to learn more about essential oils. Book Details:
Title: Just the Essentials: How Essential Oils Can Heal Your Skin, Improve Your Health, and Detox Your Life
Author: Adina Grigore
Publisher: Harper Wave
Category: Adult Non-Fiction, 240 pages
Genre: Health, Wellness, Naturopathy Medicine
Published: March 7, 2017
Content Rating: G Book Description:
The author of Skin Cleanse returns with a comprehensive guide to the ultimate ingredient for living an all-natural, plant-based lifestyle: essential oils.
For millennia, essential oils have played a key role in health and beauty rituals. From references in the Bible (frankincense and myrrh) to Hippocrates (who documented the effects of oils from over 300 plants) to Ancient Egypt (Cleopatra pioneered the use of fragrance), essential oils have been revered throughout human history for their healing powers and their unparalleled scent.
But in modern times, they’ve often been misunderstood, underappreciated, even cast as "dangerous"—and relegated to the dusty shelves of health food stores. That is, until recently. Today they’re back in the spotlight as increasing numbers of consumers are looking for all-natural alternatives to skincare products and opting for fragrance-free detergents and soaps, natural remedies for common ailments, and toxin-free home cleaning solutions.
Enter Adina Grigore, owner and founder of the wildly popular all-natural skincare line SW Basics. A former essential oil skeptic, Grigore learned everything she could about these potent plant-based compounds when she began formulating her products. And what she learned was that essential oils are some of the most powerful, healing, health-promoting compounds found in nature. That, and they smell pretty great too.
In Just the Essentials, Grigore offers a 21st-century guide to these ancient oils, offering a fresh, fun, and authoritative overview of what they are and how they can be easily incorporated into anyone’s life. From plant-based medicine to all-natural skincare to safer and cleaner household products to aromatherapy, this handy and entertaining guide provides detailed advice for a wide array of oils, safety guidelines, and a range of do-it-yourself recipes to get started. Inside you'll discover such fun facts as:
Tea tree oil is a powerful antibacterial that is proven to be as effective for treating acne as benzoyl peroxide; it also kills oral bacteria and is a life-saver for tooth infections.
Cinnamon oil is a circulation-booster that helps to ease everyday aches and pains as well as headaches (even migraines).
Peppermint oil is brimming with antimicrobial properties; peppermint oil can be used for everything from alleviating digestive problems to cleaning your kitchen counters.
With lists of the best oils for beginners; instructions for diffusing and safe handling; and DIY recipes from dish soap to toothpaste to facial masks, Just the Essentials makes it easy and enjoyable to reap the many benefits of these pure plant extracts.
My Review:
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani
I like learning about naturopathy and the holistic lifestyle, so when I saw this title I knew I wanted to read it. I don't know as much about essential oils as I would like to. I have been reading some articles on it but I wanted to know more. So not only did this book come at the right time but it was also just the kind of book I wanted to read.
Just the Essentials is divided into two parts. Part I: The 101 is a crash course on why essential oils are so great (because of the healing power of plants), how essential oils have been used in history (which I found quite interesting), and the business of essential oils (how the industry is using them) which was even more interesting and eye-opening.
The second part of the book is all about how to benefit from essential oils. It starts with an explanation of the nitty gritty of essential oils or its components, so it's a quick science lesson that helped me understand how the properties in essential oils make them so good for us. For example, which oils are antioxidant and/or anti-inflammatory. Then the author explains how you can use essential oils and provides DIY recipes for skincare products, perfume, household cleaners and others.
I learned so much reading this book! The author's tone is friendly (as more and more non-fiction books are today) and she includes safety precautions and what not to do. This book is packed with useful info such as the different types of diffusers and how to choose one for your needs, the beginner's top ten essential oils and easy recipes on how to use them, a section on FAQ and a handy index. I felt the author was very knowledgeable on the topic. She is the founder of S.W Basics, a skincare company that uses natural ingredients that are certified organic, fair trade, or sourced from family farms.
I have used tea tree oil in the past and I also found sweet orange, sunflower and lavender oil in my cabinet, but now am determined to expand my little collection and make use of essential oils. If you have skin sensitivities and cannot use commercial products, this book will give you hope and help you make your own. The recipes are easy. You just need to get the ingredients. I made the Quick Tea Tree Mouthwash in 5 minutes and used it. It's less expensive than the commercial brands and a lot safer and doesn't leave a burning sensation in your mouth like most mouthwash.
Just the Essentials is the perfect starter book for those who want to learn more about essential oils. It's easy to read and the author's own story about how she started on her journey to explore essential oils is motivating and will be revelatory for many on how you can break free from toxic skincare and other personal products.

Title: SuperLife: The 5 Simple Fixes That Will Make You Healthy, Fit, and Eternally Awesome
Author: Darin Olien
Publisher: Harper Wave
Category: Adult Non-fiction, 320 pages
Genre: Health and Fitness, Nutrition
Published: Jan 3, 2017
Content Rating: G
Book Description:
In this groundbreaking health and lifestyle guide, the superfoods expert, nutritionist, and creator of Shakeology provides the key to understanding and utilizing the five life forces—the sole factors that determine whether or not we will be healthy, fit, and free of illness.
In Superlife, Darin Olien provides us with an entirely new way of thinking about health and wellbeing by identifying what he calls the life forces: Quality Nutrition, Hydration, Detoxification, Oxygenation, and Alkalization. Olien demonstrates in great detail how to maintain these processes, thereby allowing our bodies to do the rest. He tells us how we can maintain healthy weight, prevent even the most serious of diseases, and feel great. He explains that all of this is possible without any of the restrictive or gimmicky diet plans that never work in the long term.
Olien has traveled the world, exploring the health properties of foods that have sustained indigenous cultures for centuries. Putting his research into practice, he has created a unique and proven formula for maximizing our bodies’ potential. He also includes a “How-to-eat” user’s guide with a shopping list, advice on “what to throw away,” a guide to creating a healthy, balanced diet plan, and advice on how to use supplements effectively.
Written in Olien’s engaging conversational style, Superlife is a one-of-a-kind comprehensive look at dieting and nutrition, a timeless and essential guide to maintaining the human body and maximizing its potential.
I've always been interested in eating right and following a diet and lifestyle that is holistic and organic. I love books like SuperLife because they educate, inform and motivate for better change. I am constantly frustrated because society makes it difficult to follow a healthy way of living. Our food is genetically modified and the marketing world pushes junk in our children's faces. As a parent, I am constantly trying to teach my kids why certain foods are bad for them. Books like SuperLife keep me from giving up. And the book cover is neat, isn't it? A bunch of kale leaves that looks like a human heart. Simple and clever.
As soon as I started reading SuperLife, I was enjoying it. Darin Olien is far from dry and he pulls the reader in with his own story. He admits candidly that he is not a professional scientist, but an eternal student. He had me right there. (He does have a BA in exercise physiology/nutrition and an MA in psychology) As I continue reading, I hear a lot of what I already know, but need to hear again and again. For me, lifestyle change is hard because I live with other members who are not always on board, so if I'm not reading and getting encouragement, then it's easy to give up.
SuperLife is motivating because Darin first informs and teaches. The book is divided into two parts: The Five Life Forces and The Really Useful Section which provides practical strategies, pantry staples, recipes and a list of daily simple fixes. He also includes an Acid-Alkaline list, resources and a handy index. I found this part so helpful! And I was happy to see that I am already doing some of the things he suggests and I have already incorporated some of his daily fixes, like getting outside every day. Because I work from home, this is one of the best things I can do, both for my physical and emotional wellbeing.
In the first part, we learn more in depth about the five life forces: Nutrition, Hydration, Oxygenation Alkalization and Detoxification. After each chapter in this section there is a simple to-do list that summarizes the info and moves one to action. There were many a-ha moments for me as I read through this section, my highlighter in hand. I appreciated the chapter on How to Feed the Kids, too.
SuperLife is packed with useful, enlightening and practical information for anyone interested in wellness and a healthy lifestyle. If you're struggling with this, then this book can give you the motivation you need to get going. If you enjoy a healthy lifestyle, this book will reinforce you to keep going and may give you insight if there are any things you may have missed.
