A Girl Like You by Michelle Cox (Audiobook Review and Giveaway!)

A Girl Like You was a great audiobook to escape into. I loved the mid-1930s Chicago setting with two main characters reminiscent of the cast from those black-and-white noir movies.

AUDIOBOOK DETAILS:

Series Title: A Girl Like You (A Henrietta and Inspector Howard Novel #1) by Michelle Cox
Narrated by: Jayne Entwistle
Length: 10 hours 21 mins
Category: Adult Fiction
Genre: Historical Mystery
Content Rating: PG-13 + M (There are sex scenes, not too explicit, some violence)

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

Henrietta Von Harmon works as a 26 girl at a corner bar on Chicago’s northwest side. It’s 1935, but things still aren’t looking up since the big crash and her father’s subsequent suicide, leaving Henrietta to care for her antagonistic mother and younger siblings. Henrietta is eventually persuaded to take a job as a taxi dancer at a local dance hall—and just when she’s beginning to enjoy herself, the floor matron turns up dead.

When aloof Inspector Clive Howard appears on the scene, Henrietta agrees to go undercover for him—and is plunged into Chicago’s grittier underworld. Meanwhile, she’s still busy playing mother hen to her younger siblings, as well as to pesky neighborhood boy Stanley, who believes himself in love with her and keeps popping up in the most unlikely places, determined to keep Henrietta safe—even from the Inspector, if need be. Despite his efforts, however, and his penchant for messing up the Inspector’s investigation, the lovely Henrietta and the impenetrable Inspector find themselves drawn to each other in most unsuitable ways.

MY REVIEW:
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani

In April, I read the ebook copy of this book and loved it, so when it was released in audiobook format I wanted to revisit the story by listening to it. And it turned out to be such a treat!

A Girl Like You was a great audiobook to escape into. I loved the mid-1930s Chicago setting with two main characters reminiscent of the cast from those black-and-white noir movies.

Henrietta comes from a very poor family in Chicago’s northwest side. Her father tragically died when she was thirteen and her mother is a bitter woman who is depressed and very hard on Henrietta. Being the firstborn, Henrietta does what she can to find jobs that bring in money to feed her brood of younger siblings. She's a beautiful girl, bold and courageous with a naiveté that attracts men and lands her as an undercover usherette at a burlesque club.

I enjoyed the mystery, the setting and the cast of characters in this novel. They felt authentic to the time period. Inspector Clive is somewhat of a brooding man with a painful past. Henrietta is feisty and alluring, with a sweet innocence about her. One can't help liking her. She does what is right by her family while coming of age in a heady world where sex sells and desperate women try to eke out a living amidst a dangerous trade. I did feel Henrietta was in over her head at one point and was taking bad risks, all to impress the Inspector who should not have used a young inexperienced girl to catch a mobster. Apart from this, the story kept me turning the pages. I liked the twist at the end, so good!

This is the first audiobook in the series and it made me want to listen to the next one too. The narration is excellent! Jayne Entwistle brought the story and era alive because every character stood out with her various voice impressions. Henrietta's voice was distinct and sounded like a young woman coming of age, and the male voices were spot on. Inspector Howard's voice stood out too. Cool, calm, collected and sexy. Honestly, I could picture the whole cast.

If you like atmospheric historical fiction with mystery and romance, give this series a try, either in print or audiobook format.

I'm now listening to the second book A Ring of Truth, so watch for my audiobook review next week.

Disclosure: I was provided with a downloadable audiobook. I was not told how to rate or review this product.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Michelle Cox is the author of the multiple award-winning Henrietta and Inspector Howard series as well as "Novel Notes of Local Lore," a weekly blog dedicated to Chicago's forgotten residents. She suspects she may have once lived in the 1930s and, having yet to discover a handy time machine lying around, has resorted to writing about the era as a way of getting herself back there. Coincidentally, her books have been praised by Kirkus, Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, Booklist and many others, so she might be on to something. Unbeknownst to most, Michelle hoards board games she doesn't have time to play and is, not surprisingly, addicted to period dramas and big band music. Also marmalade.

INTERVIEW WITH NARRATOR CJ McALLISTER:

We also had the opportunity to interview one of the narrators, C.J. McAllister, who is also an Audible Approved Producer

LCR: Welcome to Library of Clean Reads, CJ. Can you tell us how you began your narrating journey and how long you've been doing it?
CJ: I stepped into a sound booth for the first time in college. I had a part time job working in the control booth of my college's TV station. One day the station's VP asked me to record some station ID tags. A great deal of independent study, practice and coaching followed...I have now accumulated about 12 years of experience in the world of freelance voiceover work!

LCR: Can you give us an idea of the steps involved when you are to narrate a book?

CJ: It will vary somewhat from title to title, but typically I'll need to pre-read the title; make specific notes on character personalities, voices, etc.; raw record; edit; record pickups; proof and master. All told, I'll put about 4 to 5 hours of work in to each hour of finished product.

LCR: What is the most difficult book you've narrated and why?

CJ: One of my more challenging titles was from a few years ago, but it was actually a lot of fun. It was a supernatural thriller set in New Zealand. The challenge came from the pages and pages of traditional Maori names, terminology and dialogue. Getting those pronunciations right was not easy, let me tell you!

LCR: Do you do anything special to take care of your voice?

CJ: Staying properly hydrated is very important, of course. Beyond that, taking care of my overall fitness is critical for both the health of my voice and my body in general. It's easy let a desk job like voiceover work lure me into eating poorly and being too sedentary, but I don't want to let an excuse like that stop me from taking care of myself -- both for myself and for my family! I like variety when it comes to physical fitness to help keep things fresh -- anything from martial arts to yoga to running to weightlifting!

LCR: Who are your favorite authors?

CJ: The one that wants to hire me next? Just kidding. :) I've had the privilege of working with a lot of incredibly gifted authors like Lauren, and interpreting their creations has been a real pleasure! Beyond that, I've been a fan of the classics since I was young -- especially Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, etc. Really anyone with a gift for satire...something that seems to be a bit of a lost art these days!

LCR: Congratulations on being an Audible Approved Producer! Can you tell us more about this honor and how one achieves it?

CJ: Thank you! Just working my butt off! :) Audible occasionally awards that designation to voiceover specialists who have put in a long track record of consistent, high-quality work. It's a real honor to be chosen among some of the truly great voice actors who have gotten that award before me!

LCR: Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with me!
