Book Description:
Nicole Baker is a quiet girl - the type of person who is seldom noticed by anyone. That is until one day she discovers she has the unique ability to see images move on photographs. At first, she uses her ability to entertain friends at parties and work. Then senior detective Paul Hammond learns of her ability and enlists her help in a case of unsolved murders that he has not been able to make any headway on.
Carl Kadner, a rookie reporter with the local paper is investigating the murders as well. And he learns what it takes to be the kind of reporter he wants to be when he puts himself in danger for the sake of the story. It is only when Carl, Nicole and Detective Hammond pool their resources that things start making sense.
My Review:

Canadian author Perry Prete's latest release The Mind's Eye is a good mix of suspense thriller with paranormal elements and a great cast of flawed characters the average person can relate to. The main character detective Paul's self-deprecating look at his life actually cracked me up. These moments of humor and sarcasm in the narrative are needed because the case he and his team are working on involves gruesome murders.
This novel contains disturbing graphic content with a psychopath that gave me the creeps. I don't enjoy thrillers with sickos and had a hard time reading this book. However, the writing and pace is good (although there were way too many f-bombs) and the suspense kept me turning the pages. Even though this is fiction, there's realism in the technical aspects of the murders, aided, no doubt, by the author's own experiences as a paramedic. It made me appreciate that we have people on the force that put their life on the line to stop psychopaths.
The paranormal element with Nicole's ability to see images move on photographs, which later changes to even more powerful actions, was unique and added to the suspense.
If you enjoy thrillers with these elements, The Mind's Eye will keep you hooked.
