When investigative journalist Dallas Walker tells the couple about her latest case, known as the Pine Bridge Massacre, they realize Jessica may have witnessed the murder of a family living near a winery owned by distant relatives she was visiting and suppressed the memory.

Determined to uncover the truth and find justice for the murder victims, Jessica and Murphy return to the scene of the crime with Dallas Walker, a spunky bull-headed Texan. Can this family reunion bring closure for a community touched by tragedy or will this prickly get-together bring an end to the Thorny Rose couple?

My Review:
Reviewed by Laura Fabiani

This is the second book in the Thorny Rose Mysteries. It can be read as a stand-alone, but if you want a great intro to newlyweds Jessica and Murphy Thornton, I strongly suggest you read the first book Kill and Run.

Something horrible happened when Jessica was a child and her repressed memories are causing nightmares that make her lash out violently at Murphy while in her sleep. When Dallas Walker, an investigative journalist who is dating Jessica's uncle tells them about a case she is working on called the Pine Bridge Massacre, Jessica realizes she may have witnessed that massacre when she was staying with some relatives during a summer when she was ten.

So Jessica and Murphy decide to accompany Dallas to the small town where the massacre happened so they can uncover the truth and Jessica can move on with her life. Once again, Lauren doesn't just introduce a murder case with characters trying to solve it. Oh no, we get introduced to a whole cast of characters several of which are shady. And the story contains plot twists so that you are always kept guessing. The reader is always on his toes, trying to put the pieces together.

Dallas, who is described as a spunky bull-headed Texan is such a riot in this book! To investigate she uses her status as the daughter of a well-known rich oilman and plays the part by showing up to the small town in a shiny red Mercedes Benz convertible sports car, dressed to display her riches and her beauty. While the hotel staff and police officers are distracted by her bejewelled shapely body, loud Texan drawl and ditsy attitude, her keen mind is picking up clues. She just cracked me up with her Texan expressions. Lauren knows how to infuse humour and ease the tension as the dead bodies start showing up.

Once again, I thoroughly enjoyed Lauren Carr's latest mystery. She has a way of creating great characters that stand out. We see a vulnerable side to Jessica in this story and how this affects Murphy. I liked that Lauren also showed issues that newlywed couples deal with and weaved this into her story. Lauren Carr's books are never boring, that's for sure. They entertain, give us a good mystery to dig into, keep the reader guessing, give us a few good laughs and make us eager for the next book. Warning: Lauren Carr's series are addictive, so be ready to read more than just one book!
