Over Easy, the first book in the Continental Breakfast Club series is a fun, light-hearted hilarious story about three close friends who come up with an ingenious and illegal way to meet men, by sneaking into the continental breakfast area at high-end hotels.
When there is an identity mix-up, Allie suddenly comes into possession of a briefcase with jewellery that includes a ring worth half a million dollars, which unfortunately gets lost. What ensues is a mishmash of events leading to trying to capture the "bad guy" with the help of handsome Jax, one of Allie's clients, and finding that ring so they don't end up getting killed. This just had me cracking up!
I liked Allie, the main character. She was a dog groomer and the youngest sibling in her family who was still treated like the baby of the family even though she was now into her late twenties. She felt like she had to live up to her family's expectation of marrying well and getting a better career even though she was happy with the status quo. And who doesn't like a book where dogs' antics play a role in the plot?
Every time Allie made a wrong move, I thought, Oh no! but this seems to be Pamela Ford's trademark where she ups the stakes, making her protagonist go deeper and deeper into trouble until you wonder (and flip the pages quicker) to find out how she is going to get out of it.
I could easily picture this as one of those American romantic comedy movies you watch to unwind after a stressful day, minus the sexual debasement. (Thank you, Pamela!) This book was good clean fun, with the exception of some profanity (3 f-words). The romance was sweet and I liked how the friends stuck together to help Allie. So, if you need a break from reading your usual fare of literary fiction, this one is a quick fun read that will get you to laugh because of its endearing goofballness.
